To investigate the cytotoxic effect of Platycodon grandiflorum DC, petroleum ether extract of Platycodon grandiflorum DC was partially purified by a silica gel column chromatography. Among several fractions, fraction D which was obtained under the elution with a 7:3 mixture of petroleum ether and ethyl ether, showed patent cytotoxicity against mouse leukemia cell line (L1210), human rectum cancer cell line (HRT-18) and human colon cancer cell lint (HCT-48).
To develope natural food preservatives, ethanol and water extracts were prepared from the Lentinus edodes and antimicrobial activities were examined against 10 microorganisms which were food borne pathogens and / or food poisoning microorganisms and food-related bacteria and yeasts. Ethanol extract exhibited antimicrobial activities for the microorganisms tested, but not on lactic acid bacteria and yeast Especially, minimum inhibitory concentration(MIC) for Escherichia coli were as low as 0.5 mg/mL. Antimicrobial activity of the ethanol extract was stable by the heating at 121$^{\circ}C$ for 15 min and not affected by pH. The ethanol extract of Lentinus edodes exhibiting high antimicrobial activity. The highest antimicrobial activity adjust bacteria tested was found in the ethylacetate fraction.
Antioxidative activity of various solvent extracts from freeze dried Kimchi was studied during the oxidation process of linoleic acid mixture system. The aqueous model systems were used for the evaluation of antioxidative activity of solvent extracts during the oxidative reaction at 37$^{\circ}C$ by the determination of peroxide value. The linoleic acid mixture for the aqueous model systems was consisted of linoleic acid (64.6%), oleic acid(27.4%), and other acids in ethanolic phosphate buffer (pH 7.0). Water and methanol extracts of Kimchi had a considerable antioxidative activity with the inhibition of peroxides formation during the autoxidation of linoleic acid mixture in aqueous model systems. Antioxidative activity of 75% methanol extract of 7 day-fermented-Kimchi was relatively higher than that of others, however lower than alpa-tocopherol and butylated hydroxyanisol. The antioxidative effect of 75% methanol extract of 7 day-fermented-Kimchi was increased by the its concentration from 0.5% to 2.5% in the oxidation reactions of aqueous model systems.

To develop a new functional materials, angiotensin converting enzyme (ACE) inhibitory activity, antioxidant effect and total phenolic content of Hovenia dulcis Thunb. cortex were evaluated. Methanol and water extract of H. dulcis inhibited ACE by 81% and 76%, respectively, at the concentration of $4,000\;{\mu}g\;m{\ell}^{-1}$ which were similar level with that (85%) of commercial peptide-type ACE inhibitor. Superoxide radical scavenging activity of two extracts $(99.5%{\sim}99.9%)$ were stronger than that (69%) of ascorbic acid at the final concentration of $200\;{\mu}g\;m{\ell}^{-1}$. Among the solvent fractions, ether and ethylacetate fraction showed also potent scavenging activities (91% and 85%) for superoxide radical. Inhibitory activities of two extracts on oxidation of human low density lipoprotein (LDL) which were similar with that of ${\alpha}-tocopherol$, were higher than 80% at the concentration of $50\;{\mu}g\;m{\ell}^{-1}$. Total phenol contents of methanol and water extracts were 7.2% and 3.6%, respectively, and that of ethylacetate showed the highest value as 60.8% among the solvent fractions. Therefore, it has been suggested that H. dulcis cortex could be a effective anti-hypertention and antioxidant resource to develope a new functional material.

Extraction yields of Hizikia fusiforme with four kinds of solvents and $0{\sim}90\%$ ethanol solutions, and antimicrobial activities of the extracts against Escherichia coli, Bacillus subtilis, Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Alternaria sp. were investigated. Determination of extraction yield with several solvents showed the highest value, $33\%$ (wt/wt), when distilled water was used. However, the extraction yields by hexane, ethyl ether and ethanol were less than $1\%$ (wt/wt). When dried Hizikia fusiforme was extracted at various concentrations of ethanol, 0 to $50\%$ solution gave similar yields and the extraction yields decreased rapidly as the ethanol concentrations increased above $70\%$, Ethanol-extract demonstrated antimicrobial activities against E. coli and B. subtilis, and ethyl ether- and hexane-extracts against E. coli. 70 and $90\%$ ethanol-extracts had potent antimicrobial activities against E. coli, and B. subtilis.
A total of 5 different polar microorganisms were isolated from Arctic lichens and their bioactive compounds were extracted from cell culture using different solvents including acetone, water, chloroform, diethylether, ethanol, ethyl acetate, methanol, and petroleum ether. The antibacterial properties of the extracts were evaluated by disk diffusion tests and minimal inhibitory concentration tests against 6 bacterial pathogens; Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus subtilis, Micrococcus luteus, Enterobacter cloacae, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Among the extraction samples, ethyl acetate extracts of Burkholderia sordidicola S5-$B^T$ (KOPRI 26644) showed the highest activity (inhibition zone, 7-10 mm; MIC value, 57.5-1000 ug/ml) against targeted bacteria. Among the various solvents used for extraction, chloroform extract exhibited the weakest, but still obvious, activity.

The effect of dandelion leaf extracts on lipid metabolism was investigated in high cholesterol-fed rats. Four groups of rats were given a high cholesterol diet containing 10g cholesterol/kg and 2.5 g sodium cholate/kg for 6 weeks. The control group received without dandelion leaf extracts and the other three groups received with one of dandelion leaf extracts (water, ethyl acetate, ether), respectively. Weight gain and feed intake were significantly higher in water group than control group. Serum triglyceride, total cholesterol, cholesteryl ester, chylomicron and VLDL-cholesterol concentratins were lower, whereas HDL-cholesterol and phospholipid concentrations were significantly higher in dandelion leaf extract supplemented-groups than control group. Dandelion extract increased HDL-C/total-C ratio and lowered atherogenic index. Hepatic triglyceride, total cholesterol, free cholesterol and cholesteryl ester concentrations lowered in dandelion leaf extract groups compared to control group. Especially, hepatic triglyceride and free cholesterol levels were lower in ethyl acetate extract group than in water and ether extract groups. Dandelion leaf extract supplements did not affect hepatic phospholipid cencentration. Hepatic HMG-CoA reductase activity was significantly lower in water extract group than the others. ACAT activity was significantly decreased by dandelion extract supplements.
This study investigated the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects of Galla Rhois (Rhus verniciflua) on LPS (lipopolysaccharide)-stimulated human osteoblastic cells (MG-63). The aim of this study was to evaluate the LPS induced nitric oxide (NO) production and antioxidant radical in human osteoblast-like MG-63 cells. Therefore, the present work indicate that Galla Rhois extracts may be an ideal candidate for further research into their use for dental caries prevention component as well as, natural plant-based products. This suggested that 80% methanol and hexane extracts of Galla Rhois were inhibited NO generation and 1,1-diphenyl-2-pirylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Therefore, 80% methanol and hexane extracts of Galla Rhois may be utilized as a good source of protection against inflammation and oxidative stress. This study is intended to pursue wellness convergence in quality of life in the excavations in natural ingredients to create a variety of oral products with fewer side effects, cheap oral products for the dental treatment.
