  • Based on the weighted residual concept[4], a three-dimensional plate theory is derived using a Fourier series expansion of a dependent variable and a weighted residual approximation of the basic elasticity equations. The weighted residual equilibrium equations of the plate are expressed in terms of weighted displaced quantities, and the results are then interpreted by means of a potential energy functional. The potential energy expression is used to develop a finite element implementation. For illustrative purposes, the application of the theory to a strip plate is considered and two numerical examples of a cantilever and a simply-supported strip plate are studied.

  • A simplified method for determining the three mode(I, II, III) components of the strain energy release rate of free-edge delaminations in composite laminates is proposed. The interlaminar stresses are evaluated using the interface moment and the interface shear forces which are obtained from the equilibrium equations at the interface between the adjacent layers. Deformation of an edge-delaminated laminate is analysed by using a generalized quasi-three dimensional classical laminated plate theory. The analysis provides closed-form expression for the three components of the strain energy release rate. The analyses are performed for composite laminates subjected to uniaxial tension, with free-edge delaminations located symmetrically and asymmetrically with respect to the laminate midplane. The analysis results agreed with a finite element solution using the virtual crack closure technique.

  • When a body enters waters, its original kinetic energy or momentum is distributed among the body and surrounding water in the form of added mass. Due to the transfer of the energy or momentum, the bode is subjected to the hydrodynamic impact forces and acceleration. This impact behavior can be an important criterion of submersible vehicle launched to the air. In this paper, based on Life-boat model, an approximate method is proposed for the evaluation of the forces and responses of cylindrical rigid bode by water entry impact. The impact forces are calculated by yon Karman's momentum theory and motion responses the body, especially acceleration, are calculated by a numerical integration of the motion equations derived by hydrodynamic force equilibrium. The proposed method is expected to be a simple but efficient tool lot the preliminary design or motion analysis of a body subjected to water entry impact.

  • In this study, the adsorption behavior from aqueous solution as well as kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of Acid Black 1 were investigated through batch reaction using coconut shell based granular steam activated carbon. The effects of various adsorption parameters such as pH, initial concentration, contact time, temperature were studied. To confirm the effect of pH, pHpzc measurements were analyzed followed by measuring removal efficiencies of Acid Black 1 at the pH range from 3 to 11. Experimental equilibrium adsorption data were fitted using Langmuir, Freundlich, Temkin and Dubinin-Radushkevich adsorption isotherm. The conformity of adsorption reaction for pseudo first and second order model were evaluated through kinetic analysis. Values of enthalpy change and activation energy were also investigated through thermodynamic analysis and it was confirmed that the adsorption process was endothermic. The spontaneity of adsorption process was evaluated using the values of entropy and Gibbs free energy changes.

  • In a multi-effect solar distiller, a feeding rate of seawater to each effect should be decreased as the effect number is increased. In previous studies, the feed rate of seawater was not reduced evenly between the effects, which is unreasonable, since the thermal energy input of each effect decreases by the same amount. In this work, numerical analysis was carried out in order to elucidate this discrepancy. The results showed that the amount of distillates produced was almost the same for both evenly and unevenly reduced flow rates between the effects. Optimum feed rates of seawater with various energy inputs from exhaust gas heat exchanger were also obtained. The results showed that the optimum feed rate of the first effect increased linearly or reached a steady state depending on the heat flux.

  • A simple analytical approach for stability assessment of underground storage caverns against ground uplift of overburden rock above the rock caverns for high pressurized fluid such as compressed air energy storage (CAES) and compressed natural gas (CNG) was developed. In the developed approach, we assumed that failure plane of the overburden is straight upward to ground surface, and factor of safety can be calculated from a limit equilibrium analysis in terms of this cylindrical shape failure model. The frictional resisting force on the failure plane was estimated by Hoek-Brown strength criterion which replaces with Mohr-Coulomb criterion such that both intact rock strength and rock mass conditions can be considered in the current approach. We carried out a parametric sensitivity analysis of strength parameters under various rock mass conditions and demonstrated that the factor of safety againt ground uplift was more sensitive to Mohr-Coulomb strength criterion rather than Hoek-Brown criterion.

  • The equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of adsorption of murexide by granular activated carbon were investigated. The experiment was carried out by batch experiment with the variables of the amount of the adsorbent, the initial concentration of the dye, the contact time and the temperature. The isothermal adsorption equilibrium was best applied to the Freundlich equation in the range of 293 ~ 313 K. From the separation factor (${\beta}$) of Freundlich equation, it was found that adsorption of murexide by granular activated carbon could be the appropriate treatment method. The adsorption energy (E) obtained from the Dubinin- Radushkevich equation shows that the adsorption process is a physical adsorption process. From the kinetic analysis of the adsorption process, pseudo second order model is more consistent than pseudo first order model. It was found that the adsorption process proceeded to a spontaneous process and an endothermic process through Gibbs free energy change ($-0.1096{\sim}-10.5348kJ\;mol^{-1}$) and enthalpy change ($+151.29kJ\;mol^{-1}$). In addition, since the Gibbs free energy change decreased with increasing temperature, adsorption reaction of murexide by granular activated carbon increased spontaneously with increasing temperature. The entropy change ($147.62J\;mol^{-1}\;K^{-1}$) represented the increasing of randomness at the solid-solution interface during the adsorption reaction of murexide by activated carbon.

  • Adsorption equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic parameters of a brilliant green from aqueous solutions at various initial dye concentration (10~30 mg/L), contact time (1~24 h) and temperature (298~318 K) on zeolite were studied in a batch mode operation. The equilibrium adsorption values were analyzed by Langmuir, Freundlich and Dubinin-Radushkevich model. The results indicate that Langmuir and Freundlich model provides the best correlation of the experimental data. Base on the estimated values of Langmuir dimensionless separation factor ($R_L=0.041{\sim}0.057$) and Freundlich constant (1/n=0.30~0.47), this process could be employed as effective treatment method. calculated values of adsorption energy by Dubinin-Radushkevich model were 1.564~1.857 kJ/mol corresponding to physical adsorption. The adsorption kinetics of brilliant green were best described by the pseudo second-order rate model and followed by intraparticle diffusion model. Thermodynamic parameters such as activation energy, free energy, enthalpy and entropy were calculated to estimate nature of adsorption. negative Gibbs free energy (-10.3~-11.4 kJ/mol), positive enthalpy change (49.48 kJ/mol) and Arrehenius activation energy (27.05 kJ/mol) indicates that the adsorption is spontaneous, endothermic and physical adsorption process, respectively.
