  • The characteristics of the floating breakwater is briefly reviewed and their performance is numerically investigated. The numerical scheme is a boundary integral method for inviscid potential flows, and various two-dimensional floating breakwater modules are studied focusing on the transmission coefficient. The general characteristics of pontoons is studied as function of mooring line stiffness, mass moment inertia and draft. Trapezoidal-, hat- and table-shape cross-sections are also studied with varying shape-parameters. The efficiency varies with changes in each shape-parameter and for some cases satisfying tranquility can be expected with even longer waves.

  • Recently, the composite materials have been researched actively by many researchers because of its useful properties. Especially, an interface crack on the dissimilar material exposes the behavior of the mixed mode crack even though under only the tension stress. In the previous papers, crack energy density(CED) was shown as the crack behavior evaluation parameter which can be expressed consistently from the onset until a final fracture. In a present paper, the basic properties of CED on the interface crack are examined because the results by CED at the homogeneous material above are also expected to be held at the dissimilar material. And we proposed that the contribution of each mode of CED can be separated and be evaluated. Furthermore, the total CED and contribution of each mode are evaluated by domain integral through a finite element analysis at the elastic crack model and the basic examination are carried out.

  • To evaluate the tidal flow around the transmission type harbour structures, the numerical models considering hydraulic resistance are used. The traditional governing equations of depth-integratef hydrodynamics are modified by using of the drag force term. As a numerical model to evaluate the rate of tidal exchange, the Random-walk method is used. The models are applied in a design of the pile-supported pier structures in Busan harbour site, Korea, where the flow speed and the tidal exchange are more promotive than the case of non-transmission structure. The developed model will be applied usefully to design the transmission type structure in the ocean space.

  • A plant simulation code, MCSIM (Micro-Computer SIMulator), has been developed to simulate plant transient accidents for pressurized water reactors. Reactor coolant system is modeled using decoupled energy and momentum equations, drift flux two-phase flow model and integral momentum equation. A two-fluid pressurizer model is used to simulate the pressurizer dynamics. Pot Boiler model is used for steam generator, steady-state decoupled energy and momentum equations for secondary side system, and point kinetics equations for nuclear power calculation. For test of the present version of MCSIM, complete loss of flow and RCCA withdrawal accidents are calculated with MCSIM. The results are compared with those in FSAR of KNU 5 & 6.

  • Performance of photovoltaic (PV) generator systems relies on its operating conditions. Maximum power extracted from PV generators depends strongly on solar irradiation, load impedance, and ambient temperature. A most maximum power point tracking (MPPT) algorithm is based on a perturb and observe method and an incremental conductance method. It is well known the latter is better in terms of dynamics and tracking characteristics under condition of rapidly changing solar irradiation. However, in case of digital implementation, the latter has some error for determining a maximum power point. This paper presents a PID based MPPT algorithm for such PV systems. We use neural network technique for determining PID parameters by online learning approach. And we construct a boost converter to regulate the output voltage from PV generator system. Computer simulation is carried out to evaluate the proposed MPPT method and we accomplish comparative study with a perturb and observe based MPPT method to prove its superiority.

  • Arrhenius kinetic constants, the activation energy and the pre-exponential factor, of energetic material $BKNO_3$ are estimated using Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC). Different from the conventional way, the activation energy was estimated more precisely through DSC aging trial, and the consumed fraction by heat was calculated by comparing the integration of heat flow. We suggested the condition of accelerated aging test for the energetic material $BKNO_3$ and reconsidered the meaning of the thermal accelerated aging.

  • A 3-D vision system is developed to evaluate blanks' line up and monitor gap and thickness difference between blanks in tailored blank welding system. A structured lighting method is used for 3-D vision recognition. Images of sheared portion in blanks are irregular according to roughness of blank surface, shape of sheared geometry and blurring. It is difficult to get accurate and reliable informations in the case of using binary image processing or contour detection techniques in real time for such images. We propoe a new energy integration method robust to blurring and changes of illumination. The method is computationally simple, and uses feature restoration concept, different to another digital image restoration methods which aim image itself restoration and may be used in conventional applications using structured line lighting technique. Experimental results show this system measuring repeatability is .+-. pixel for gap and thickness difference in static and dynamic tests. The data are expected to be useful for preview gap control.

  • In this study, wave transformation by damping due to the permeable bed of finite depth is investigated. The relationship between wave damping rate and relative water depth are presented. The damping rate is used in the eigenfunction expansion method to calculate the wave dissipation over the permeable bed. For a permeable shoal, the eigenfunction expansion model result is compared with that of the integral equation method to show good agreement. The model is also used to examine the wave reflection over the permeable planar slope of various frequency. It has been found that in general relatively short waves are more influenced by the permeability of the permeable seabed than relatively long waves unless the water depth is so large that the influence of permeable bed on surface water waves disappears.

  • This paper aims at investigating the exact dynamic response of the system undergoing a exponential impact force from the viewpoints of conservations of momentum and energy. The midpoint method applied in the Newmark's family algorithm is found to be identical to the case of the application of the trapezoidal method which provides conservations of momentum and energy. For the linear impact force the mid point, the trapezoidal and the (n+1) point method exactly meet the conservation characteristics independent of the size of integration interval. On the other hand, constants for the dynamic motion resulting from the nonlinear impact are underestimated or overestimated by these method mentioned above. To overcome this indispensible error, the Simpson 1/3 method as one of multi step methods whose advantages is to use longer time interval with the same number of evaluation functions is adopted for the exact conservations of momentum and energy. Moreover, the suggested method is expected to expand the similar algorithm for the general dynamic motion including finite rotations.

  • In general, the salient features of the floating breakwater have excellent regulation of sea-water keeping the marine always clean, up and down free movement with the incoming and outgoing tides, capable of being installed without considering the geological condition of sea-bed at any water depth. This study discusses the three dimensional wave transformation of the floating breakwater moored by piers, and its dynamic response numerically. Numerical method is based on the boundary integral method and eigenfunction expansion method. It is known that pier mooring system has higher absorption of wave energy than the chain mooring system. Pier mooring system permit only vertical motion (heaving motion) of floating breakwater, other motions restricted. It is assumed in the present study that a resistant force as friction between piers and floating pontoon is not applied far the vertical motion of the floating breakwater. According to the numerical results, draft and width of the floating breakwater affect on the wave transformations greatly, and incident wave of long period is well transmitted to the rear of the floating breakwater, And the vertical motion come to be large for the short wave period.
