  • General formulation to analyse the rectangular thin plate on a soil medium by energy method is developed. In the problem, Boussinesque's formular needs to be integrated after assuming the contact stress distribution. Two different functions, i.e., power series and Chebychev polynomials are used to approximate the contact stress distribution. It was found that Chebychev polynomials are better function to describe the contact stress than power series. Chebychev polynomials considering stress singularity around plate boundary is recommended as the desirable shape function for future research.

  • Engine turbulences obtained by LDV measurement near the compression TDC was analyzed by the classic turbulence theory. Turbulences were quantified by a cycle resolved analysis and processed to reveal integral time scale and length scale. Three different definitions were applied to obtain the turbulence time scales and then compared each others. The classic turbulence theory with the several assumptions for engine application proven to be very efficient for understanding engine turbulence in this study. It was found that the integral length scale is strongly affected and increased by tumble flow.

  • Wave energy absorption by a flap equipped with a harbor in a water of finite depth is studied. The wave potential is calculated by a hybrid integral equation consisting of Green integral equations associated with Rankine and Kelvin Green functions. The absorbed wave energy is calculated by both the near-field and far-field methods. The present methods can be used for the design of a flap-harbor wave energy absorber since the numerical results by the two methods are in good agreement.

  • This study investigated that the stress reduction of single edge cracked plates with patch repairs according to different type of patching such as material, size and thickness of patch and adhesive as well as single sided or double sided patches. As a numerical tool, the p-convergent partial layerwise model has been employed. The proposed model is formulated by assuming piecewise linear variation of in-plane displacement and a constant value of out-of-plane displacements across thickness. The integrals of Legendre polynomials are chosen to define displacement fields and Gauss-Lobatto numerical integration is implemented in order to directly obtain maximum values occurred at the nodal points of each layer without other extrapolation techniques. Also, total strain energy release rate method is adopted to obtain stress intensity factors. Numerical examples are presented not only to demonstrate the stress reduction effect in terms of non-dimensional stress intensity factor and deflection with respect to different type of patch repairs, but also the accuracy of proposed model.

  • A powerful and efficient method for finding approximate solutions to initial-boundary-value problems in the transient coupled thermoelasticity is formulated in time domain using the finite element technique with time-marching strategy. The final system equations can be derived by the Guritin's variational principle using the definition of convolution integral. But, the finite element formulation for the equations of motion is modified by differentiating in time. Numerical results to some test problems are compared with analytical and other sophisticated approximate solutions. Stable responces are observed in all the given examples irrespective of incremental time steps and mesh shapes. In addition, it is shown that good numerical results are obtained even in coarser mesh or larger time step comparing to other numerical methods.

  • This paper proposes visual-feature extraction for each band in wavelet domain with both spatial frequency features and multi resolution features, and the combination of visual features using fuzzy integral. In addition, it uses color feature expression method taking advantage of the frequency of the same color after color quantization for reducing quantization error, a disadvantage of the existing color histogram intersection method. Also, it is found that the final similarity can be represented in a linear combination of the respective factors(Homogram, color, energy) when each factor is independent one another. With respect to the combination patterns the fuzzy measurement is defined and the fuzzy integral is taken. Experiments are peformed on a database containing 1,000 color images. The proposed method gives better performance than the conventional method in both objective and subjective performance evaluation.

  • For the time-domain simulation of incipient breaking waves, usually the boundary integral method has been used so far, and it seems to be successful except a problem of too much computation time. The present paper shows a new computation technique for the simulation of breaking wave experiment. This technique uses the high-order spectral/boundary element method and the boundary integral method in sequence, and reduces the computation time remarkably. The wave generation and energy focusing process is efficiently simulated by the high-order spectral/boundary element method. Only the wave over-turning process is simulated by the boundary integral method. In the example calculation result, salient features of breaking waves such as high particle velocities and accelerations are shown.

  • This study examined the dynamic relationship between urbanization and energy consumption in China. As an alternative to the conventional method of having the same integration of time series and large samples, ARDL method and Toda-Yamamoto causality analysis were applied. As a result, urbanization income, income, and energy consumption have a long-term stable equilibrium. Urbanization and income have a positive effect on energy consumption in the long run, but short-term changes of urbanization and income have no significant effect on energy consumption changes. The adjusted coefficient was -0.2395, which was statistically significant. In the causality test, income and energy consumption are useful to predict each other, but urbanization is exogenous because there are no causality with other variables. Since the process of urbanization in China has been proceeding slowly and deliberately by the government, it can be seen that the long-term effects of urbanization are clear and exogenous.

  • Remote monitoring partial discharge sensor, equipping with hybrid filter combining optical and electrical noise reduction capabilities and with signal integrating function to calculate total arc energy, was investigated. Hybrid filter showed insensitivity to fluorescent and incandescent lamps under simulated distribution panel condition. Signal integrating function showed selective detection capability corresponding to different arc energy levels, while convention arc sensor had difficulty to discriminate arc energy level due to bursty arc waveform and peak level detection characteristics. The sensor showed possibility for application to remote monitoring partial discharge sensor, since it detected arc energy level corresponding to normal open and close discharge in low voltage 100A MCCB at 2m distance.
