  • This study aimed to evaluate how fish meal (FM) replacement in diets with a mixture of animal and plant protein sources affect growth performance, feed utilization, hematological parameters and innate immunity of red seabream Pagrus major. A control FM diet was formulated to contain 65% FM (Con). Two other diets were prepared replacing FM in the control diet with a mixture of protein sources (wheat gluten, soy-protein concentrate, tankage meal, and poultry by-product meal) by 30 and 40% (FM30 and FM40, respectively). Total 300 red seabream (body weight, 77.6±0.3g) were distributed to 12 tanks (300 L) in 4 replicates per diet. The fish were fed the diets to apparent satiation for 19 weeks. After the feeding trial, no significant differences could be observed in growth performance, feed utilization, hematological parameters, innate immunity, and survivals among all the dietary treatments. This long-term feeding trial at low water temperature (13.8-17.5℃) indicates that a proper mixture ratio of wheat gluten, soy protein concentrate, tankage meal, and poultry by-product meal can replace FM up to 40% in red seabream diets.

  • Two long-term feeding trials were conducted to compare the effects on survival and growth of juvenile sea cucumber Apostichopus japonicus of experimental diets containing corn distillers dried grains with solubles, Squid Sepioteuthis sepioidea liver meal, and brown fish meal with a commercial die. In both first and second trials, two experimental diets and one commercial diet were assessed. After a 45-week feeding period in trial 1, survival did not differ significantly among groups. The final mean weight of sea cucumbers fed either experimental diet was significantly higher than that of sea cucumbers fed the commercial diet. After a 15-week feeding period in trial 2, survival and final mean weight of sea cucumbers fed either experimental practical diets was significantly higher than that of sea cucumbers fed the commercial diet. It was concluded that the experimental diets formulations can be used as a practical diet, and inclusion of corn distillers dried grains with solubles, squid liver meal, and brown fish meal can improve the growth of juvenile sea cucumbers.

  • This study aimed to evaluate the effectivity of full-fat black soldier fly Hermetia illucens (BSF) and defatted mealworm Tenebrio molitor (MW) larvae meal as a fish meal (FM) substitute in a low-fish meal (LFM) diet for juvenile olive flounder Paralichthys olivaceus. The LFM diet comprising 45% FM with tankage meal, poultry byproduct meal, soy protein concentrate and wheat gluten was the control diet. Three experimental diets were 10% FM in Con with BSF, MW and a mixture of both at the same ratio (designated as B10, M10 and B5M5, respectively). Four hundred and forty-fourth juvenile P. olivaceus (34.3±0.1 g) were randomly distributed into 12 tanks (425 L) in three replicate groups per treatment and fed the experimental diets for 15 weeks. At the end of the feeding trial, growth performance, survival, biological indices (condition factor, viscerosomatic index, hepatosomatic index), non-specific immune responses (lysozyme, myeloperoxidase) and intestinal histology (villi length and goblet cells) were not significantly affected by treatments. Feed utilization was significantly decreased in M10 compared to the control group. Alanine aminotransferase level was significantly higher in M10 than in the control group. Glucose level was significantly lower in B10 than in the control group. These results suggest that BSF and MW can be used as FM substitutes. However, considering feed conversion ratio and AST level, MW availability is thought to be lower than that of BSF, and feeding fish with a diet containing MW for an extended period is thought to adversely affect fish growth.

  • This study evaluated the effects of defatted and non-defatted black soldier fly meal (BSFM) as a fish meal replacement in growing red seabream. Four isonitrogenous and isolipidic diets were formulated: 0% BSFM (D1), 5% defatted BSFM (D2), 5% non-defatted BSFM (D3), and 5% defatted + non-defatted BSFM (1:1, D4). A total of 360 growing red seabreams (mean ± SD body weight, 98.9±0.29 g) were equally distributed into 12 circular polyethylene tanks (1,000 L; 30 fish per tank; N=3 tanks per treatment). The red seabream were fed until satiation twice daily for 12 weeks. After 12 weeks, growth, feed utilization, whole-body proximate composition, blood parameters, and immune related parameters were measured. No significant differences were observed in weight gain, specific growth rate, feed conversion ratio, morphological parameters, plasma metabolites, plasma lysozyme, glutathione peroxidase, and superoxide dismutase among the experimental groups. However, immunoglobulin M (IgM) in fish fed D2 and D3 were significantly higher than those in fish fed D1. Additionally, the fish in D2 group showed higher IgM levels than those in the other treatment groups. These results indicate that defatted and non-defatted BSFM could be utilized as a potential feed ingredient for fishmeal replacement for red seabream.

  • A practical control diet was prepared and compared with raw fish ($80\%$ frozen horse mackerel + $20\%$ commercial binder meal) and moist pellet ($50\%$ frozen horse mackerel + $50\%$commercial binder meal) diets to develop a practical diet formulation for Korean rockfish (Sebastes schlegeli). Korean rockfish averaging 68.5g were fed with the three experimental diets for 11 months. Final average body weight was approximately 330g and showed no significant difference between fish groups (P>0.05). Feed efficiency of fish from control diet was significantly lower than those of fish from raw fish and moist pellet diets (P<0.05). Protein and lipid retention efficiency of fish ranged $26.9-28.8\%$ and $86.5-110.2\%$, respectively, without any significant difference between the different diets. At the end of the experiment, chemical composition for the various parts of fish body and flesh quality of the raw fish were examined. The data showed that there was no significant difference between fish from the different diet groups for moisture, protein and lipid contents of whole body, liver, and dorsal muscle. Also, thirty three panelists did not find any difference in color, smell, texture, and taste of the raw fish flesh. These results suggest that Korean rockfish can be cultured with a laboratory practical feed without any negative effects on growth, nutrient utilization, chemical composition of fish, and quality of raw fish. Therefore, the next step in developing practical feed is to modify the control diet for improving fish performance and reducing feed cost.

  • In order to determine the optimum digestible energy to protein (DE/P) ratio in diets for Korean rockfish, Sebastes schlegeli, $45\%$ and $40\%$ protein diets with graded levels of DE/P ratio were fed to average 36g and 80g fish, respectively. The DE/P ratios in the $45\%$ protein diets ranged from 7.4 to 10.0 kcal/g protein, while those in the $40\%$ protein diets varied between 7.5 and 8.9 kcal/g protein. Both in the $45\%$ and $40\%$ protein diets, the changes in the DE/P ratios did not affect either the daily weight gain or the feed efficiency. However daily protein retention, daily energy retention, nutrient utilization and chemical composition in carcass varied depending on the DE/P ratios. Thus based on these parameters as criteria, the optimum DE/P ratio for both the $40\%$ and $45\%$ protein diets, estimated to be about 8 kcal/g protein. DE/P ratios more than 8 kcal/g protein, led to the deposition of a large amount of body fat, especially in the viscera. Any protein-sparing effect was not observed with the increase of the energy content in the diets. Apparent digestibility coefficients determined by the indirect method, using $Cr_2O_3$ as an indicator, were around $90,\;98\%\;and\;70\%$, for protein, lipid and digestible carbohydrate respectively, without any distinct differences between the diets.

  • Biogenic amines are generally formed through the decarboxylation of specific free amino acids by exogenous decarboxylases released by microbial species associated with the fish products and fermented feeds. This study was conducted to investigate the properties of e tuna waste regarding the control of degradation of biogenic amines (histamine, tyramine, tryptamine, putrescine, and cadaverine) that might be related with the anti-nutritional factor of the tuna waste that is used for manufacturing domestic fish meal. The values of pH and the salt content were 6.51, 3.35% in tuna waste and 5.58 and 5.83% in tuna fish meal, respectively. The strains and dominant bacteria tested in the tuna waste sample were 9.20, 9.29, 5.67, 7.82 and 7.58 log CFU/g of total bacteria, aerobic plate count (APC), total coliform (TC), Lactobacillus spp. and Bacillus spp., respectively. The main histamine forming-bacteria (HFB) in tuna waste were detected by silica gel thin-layer chromatography (TLC) and 7 histamine-forming bacterial species were isolated among microbes grown in selective medium. The histamine concentration was determined by detection of fluorescence of ο-phthaldialdehyde (OPA) derivatives using HPLC and the date were used to reconfirm the identities of the amine-producing bacteria. The 15 histamine- forming bacteria strains grown in trypicase soy broth (TSB) supplemented with 1% L-histidine (TSBH) were identified as Lactococcus(L.) lactis subsp. lactis, Klebsiella pneummonlae, L. garvieae 36, Vibrio olivaceus, Hafnia alvei and L. garvieae which were main dominant amine - producing strains, and Morganella morganii identified by 16S ribosomal RNA (rRNA) sequencing with PCR amplification. A Phylogenetic tree generated from the 16S rRNA sequencing data showed different phyletic lines that could be readily classified as biogenic amine forming gram-positive and negative bacteria.

  • In order to evaluate the effect of lipids on the utilization of the energy and Protein of the diet, the isocaloric and isoprotein diets added with mutton fat, tallow, and lecithin at the levels of two percent and five percent were prepared. The growth of chicken and the feed efficiency were observed on hatched chicken which were fed a commercial diet for the first week, with starters for the next four weeks, and with finisher diets for the last three weeks respectively during the eight weeks of the experiment. Growth rate, feed efficiency, and average body weight gain per day were similar among the chicken fed diets containing various lipids or at the levels of two percent and five percent. The metabolizable energy of the diets was found to be from 2.713kcal to 3.059kcal per gram, and the metabolizability of the gross energy was from 62 percent to 70 percent. Also the metabolizability of basal diet was higher as compared with the diets containing lipids. And the lower energy utilization was found in the broilers fed diets containing five percent lipids than those of two percent, showing not significant difference between them. Daily metabolizable energy of three week old birds ranged from 132kca1 to 168kcal which resulted in also a tendency of lower values in the five percent diets. And daily retained nitrogen of birds ranged from 0.631 gr to 0.738 gr, which showed an increasing tendency on the birds fed five percent mutton fat and tallow in comparison with those of two percent. But the lecithin brought about a reverse tendency. The digestibility of crude fats was found to be from 48 percent to 76 percent, but not significant difference among diets plus lipids or at the levels of two percent and five percent. The birds fed five percent mutton fat and tallow showed a tendency of lower digestibility as. compared with those fed two percent, but the similar results were found between two percent and five percent lecithin fed to the birds. Then, it was tentatively concluded that the effect of the mutton fat on the energy and protein utilization was similar to tallow but resulted different tendency with lecithin.

Triplicate groups of the 50 fish averaging 4.25 g were fed one of four isoproteic ($47\%$) and isolipidic ($9\%$) experimental diets to satiation twice a day for 10 weeks. Weight gain, feed efficiency and protein retention in fish fed the diet with vitamin premix-1 were significantly higher than those in fish fed the other diets (P<0.05). Moisture, protein and lipid contents of muscle and whole body were not affected by different dietary vitamin premix (P>0,05). These results indicate that premix-1 can be used to adequate supplemental vitamin premix in test diet containing fish meal as protein source for juvenile Korean rockfish.
