  • The main purpose of this study was to examine the mediating roles of mothers' psychological well-being and support/control in the relationship between maternal child-related stress and adolescents' school adjustment. Participants were 389 3rd grade middle school students and their mothers. Mothers completed questionnaires about child-related stress and psychological well-being. Adolescents completed scales of maternal controlling/supportive parenting and school adjustment. Results indicated that a direct effect of mothers' child-related stress on adolescents' school adjustment was not significant. However, mothers' psychological well-being and support/control mediated the relations between child-related stress and adolescents' school adjustment. A higher level of child-related stress in mothers was associated with a lower level of psychological well-being, followed by a lower level of adolescents' school adjustment. Mothers who reported a higher level of child-related stress tended to be less supportive and more controlling, which led to a lower level of school adjustment. These findings suggest the need for considering both maternal characteristics and parenting in explaining adolescents' school adjustment.

For this study, eight migration women by marriage were chosen and their adaptation strategies as a wife, daughter-in-law, and as mother to adapt themselves to family lives were observed. For this, phenomenological method was adopted and their adaptation strategies were analyzed mainly in terms of their relationships within a family. Their adaptation strategies drawn in this study could be categorized into 11 themes, 26 theme bundles and 76 meanings. First, in relation to their husband, their adaptation strategies were 'to live relying on their good husband' and 'to think of their husband as their supporter.' Second, the adaptation strategies with regard to their parents-in-law were 'to exclude their husband's family' and 'to admit their caregiving.' Third, their adaptation strategies in terms of their relation to the children, were 'to set their children as the goal for marriage life,''to incorporate themselves with the local community,' 'to be equipped with authority as a parent' and 'to raise the children as a Korean.' In addition, their psychological adaptation strategies displayed their admittance of changes, maintaining their own identity, their sustenance of self-esteem and the resignation. Finally, based on these results, this study suggested ways to facilitate their adaptation to family life as well as the essence of their adaptation strategies.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of storytelling lessons using picture books on the resilience of adolescents and the parent-child relationships in the family unit of home economics subject in middle school. For this purpose, I selected picture books of five themes on family type, family relationship, family conflict, sexual violence, domestic violence, and family loss, and developed a teaching-learning process plan for 'Family class with picture book' using storytelling elements and techniques. The teaching-learning plan was applied to 194 middle school students in technology·home economics classes, and the learning effet was evaluated by comparing pre- and post-tests. As a result, the resilience level perceived by adolescents increased significantly after class, but no significant effect was found on self-expansion, which is a sub-factor of sociality. In the parent-child relationship of adolescents, the effect of instruction was shown in all areas, and the affectional bonds felt in the relationship with mother than with father showed higher increase. In the family unit of home economics, storytelling lesson through picture book seems to have a positive influence on the adolescents in their relationship with the family by bringing up the potential power in them to stand against the adversities they may face.

  • The main purposes of this study were to analyze the moderating effect of parenting knowledge in the relationship between socio-demographic factors and parenting style. This study was conducted with the data from 'Panel Study Korean Children(2009).' Among the original data, a sample of 1,637 mothers with infants ranged from 13 to 18 months old was selected. The results of this study were as follows. First, there were significant differences in child's birth-order, mother's education level, and monthly family income. Second, there was a statistically significant difference in the parenting style of mothers in their parenting knowledge. That is, the mother with a high score in parenting knowledge reported more positive parenting style. Lastly, the interaction effects between socio-demographic variables and parenting knowledge on parenting style were statistically significant only with the variables such as child's birth-order and mother's education level. The mothers who cared for their first child and got a high score in parenting knowledge showed the most desirable parenting style, and the mothers whose educational level was under high school graduation and parenting knowledge score was low reported the lowest score in parenting style. These results suggest parenting knowledge should be subject-specifically provided as the differences in socio-demographic variables.
