  • JPEG200, a new international standard for still image compression based on wavelet and bit-plane coding techniques, is developed. In this paper, we design the DWT(Discrete Wavelet Transform) and quantizer for JPEG2000 CODEC. DWT handles both lossy and lossless compression using the same transform-based framework: The Daubechies 9/7 and 5/3 transforms, and quantizer is implemented as SQ(Scalar Quantization). The architecture of the proposed DWT and SQ are synthesized and verified using Xilinx FPGA technology. It operates up to 30MHz, and executes algorithms of wavelet transform and quantization for VGA 10 frame per second.

  • In this paper, we propose a new subband quantizer which is a type of quad-tree for applying to digital hologram compression based on Fresenelet transform. After executing Fresnelet transform to the captured digital holgoram, we analyze effect of the designed quantizer for the reconstructed objects from analyzing average energy of each coefficient and visual importance in all subbands. We analyze distribution of coefficient and set dynamic range for each subband, and then design subband quantizer. For enhancing effectiveness of the designed quantize, we adopt a method using the coefficients which are located out of dynamic range, which are named by exception indices. From this, we can obtain more effective quantizer which has higher performance in a range of σ′ = 5.0.

  • This paper has derived the conversion loss according to the synchronized condition between the transmitted and locally generated spreading signals for the civil global positioning system (GPS) receiver in the heavy wideband Gaussian noise environments. From this, the outputs of the 2-bit nonuniform quantizer, which has the minimum conversion loss, is set to ${\pm}1$ and ${\pm}2$, while the quantization step size is approximated to the jamming-to-signal power ratio.

  • In this paper, we propose a predictive block constrained trellis coded quantization (BC-TCQ) to quantize cepstral coefficients for the distributed speech recognition. For Prediction of the cepstral coefficients. the 1st order auto-regressive (AR) predictor is used. To quantize the prediction error signal effectively. we use a BC-TCQ. The performance is compared to the split vector quantizers used in the ETSI standard, demonstrating reduction in the cepstral distance and computational complexity.

  • In this paper, the high-band codec for bandwidth scalable wideband speech codec is proposed. The wideband input speech signal is separated into low-band signal and high-band signal, and the low-band signal is encoded by the standard narrow-band speech codec and the high-band signal is encoded by the proposed codec. In the high-band codec. the signal is transformed into frequency domain by MLT on a subframe basis, and MLT coefficients are splitted into magnitude and sign for quantization. The magnitudes of MLT coefficients are arranged into several time-frequency bands and each band is quantized in 2D-DCT domain, where the low-band information is utilized for better performance. The sign of MLT coefficient is quantized based on a priority selection process with the weighting measurement. The objective and subjective performance of wideband speech codec including the proposed high-band codec is measured, and it is confirmed that the proposed codec has better performance than 32kbps G.722.1.

  • H.263 is an international standard of ITU-T that can makes the service such as video phone, video conference in the transmission line less than 64Kbps. This recommendation draft has used motion estimation/compensation, transform coding and quantizing methods. TMN5 used for the performance estimation of H.263 has fundamentally used DCT in transform coding method and presented quantizer for quantizing the DCT transform coefficient. This paper is presenting adaptive quantizer effectively able to quantize DCT coefficient considering the human visual sensitivity while the structure of TMN5 is maintaining. As quantizer that proposed DCT-based H.263 could make transmit more frame than TMN5 in a same transfer speed, it could lower the frame drop effect. And the luminance signal appeared the difference of -0.3 ~ +0.7dB in the average PSNR for the estimation of objective image quality and the chrominance signal appeared the improvement in about 1.5dB in comparision with TMN5. As a result it can attain the better image quality compared to TMN5 in the estimation of subjective image quality.

  • Locally optimum detectors are useful for detection of signals with small strength, but it is often difficult to implement the exact form of the locally optimum nonlinearity. In this paper, a suboptimum quantizer detection system in which the locally optimum nonlinearity is replaced by a uniform quantizer and a coder is proposed. The proposed system does not require iteration to obtain the quantizer parameters and is easily implementable.

  • Dealing with quntization error in a control system properly becomes much more important as many devices are connected through network and controlled. Thus, in this paper, we study a data rate condition on quantizer to achieve practical stability in a discrete time linear time invariant system with state feedback control. First, required data rate is shown to depend on eigenvalue of the closed loop system, the size of the initial state vector, the magnitude of initial quantization error, and control gain in the absence of process noise. It additionally depends on the maximum magnitude of process noise when noise is not zero. Asymptotic analysis shows that a new design method may be needed to reduce the date rate for a networked control in the presence of quantization error and noise.. We provide a simple numerical evaluation of uniform quantizer and logarithmic qunatizer to assess their characteristics of practical stability depending on data rate in the presence of noise.
