  • In order to study the solubilization of aniline by cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB and CTAB), the solubilization constant (Ks) and thermodynamic functions were measured and calculated by using the UV-Vis method. The solubilization constants of aniline with the change of temperature were measured, and the effects of addition of ionic salts and organics on the solubilization constants were investigated. These effects of additives and temperature changes were compared and analyzed for each type of surfactant, and the solubilization of aniline was analyzed microscopically by comparing and evaluating the thermodynamic functions obtained from the solubilization constants. As a result, the Gibbs free energy and enthalpy changes were both negative and the entropy changes were positive within the measured range for the solubilization of aniline by cationic surfactants. The solubilization constant value decreased with increasing temperature and increased with increasing carbon chain length of the surfactant. As the concentration of ionic salts increased, the Gibbs free energy change increased at first and then decreased. In n-butanol solution, the Gibbs free energy change tended to increase continuously with increasing the concentration of n-butanol.

  • In order to investigate the effects of supplemental ionic surfactants in in vitro ruminal fermentation, N-Lauroylsarcosine sodium salt(N-LSS) and sodium dodecyl sulfate(SDS) for negative(-) ionic surfactant, and hexadecylpyridinium chloride monohydrate(HPCM) and hexadecyltrimethyl ammonium bromide(HTAB) for positive (+) ionic surfactant were supplemented by 0.05% and 0.1% into the Dehority’s artificial medium containing rice straw(1mm) as a substrate. In vitro DM digestibility, the growth of rumen mixed microbes, pH, cumulative gas production and SEM(Scanning Electron Microscopy) observation of microbial attachment on rice straw particle were investigated through the experiment composing 9 treatments (two supplemental levels of two positive ionic(+) surfactant, two supplemental levels of two negative(-) ionic surfactant) including the control. The sample collection was at 6, 12, 24, 48 and 72 h post fermentation with 3 replications per treatments. DM digestibility in treatments supplemented (+) or (-) surfactants almost stopped afterward 12 h fermentation, in vitro DM digestibility at 72 h post fermentation in the ionic surfactants was at half level of that of the control(P<0.05). Accumulative gas production in in vitro was less(P<0.05) with addition of ionic surfactants compared to the control. The amount of rumen mixed microbes recovered from in vitro incubation fluid pleateaued at 12 h post fermentation for the positive (+) ionic surfactants, but steadily increased as fermentation time elapsed for the control. Rumen microbial growth rate was significantly(P<0.05) low in the negative(-) ionic surfactant compared to the control. pH of the incubation fluid was ranged from 6.02 to 7.20, and was the highest in the negative(-) ionic surfactants, and was the lowest in the control(P<0.05). In SEM observation, rumen microbial population attached on rice straw particle was less with addition of ionic surfactants than the control. In conclusion we could not found any positive effects of negative- and positive- charged surfactants on rumunal fermentation characteristics and rumen microbial growth rates.

  • A cationic ester type surfactant, namely N-2-hydroxy-3-(2-hydroxyacetoxy) proply-N,N-dimethyldodecylaminium chloride(HPDA) was synthesized and confirmed by FT-IR and $^1H$-NMR spectroscopy. Surface tensions on the diluted aqueous solutions of the synthetic compounds were measured and evaluated critical micelle concentration. Surface tension was 33~34 dyne/cm in the range of $10^{-3}{\sim}10^{-2}mol/L$ and critical micelle concentration(c.m.c) value was $8.5{\times}10^{-3}mol/L$ by surface tension method. Emulsifying properties of the synthetic surfactant(HPDA) and Sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS), tetradecyl trimethyl ammonium bromide (TTAB) was tested. As a results, synthetic glycolic acid ester type compounds(HPDA) has been confirmed as a good emulsifier. The foaming power and stability of synthesized ester type surfactant was measured by Ross-Miles method.

  • The technique that could collect efficiently the hanji fibrous sludge from wastewater using surfactants was developed. When fibrous sludge of which concentration was about 80mg/L, was floated and collected, the optimum concentration of sodium oleate, the pore size of glass filter and the air flow rate were 10mg/L, $5-10{\mu}m$ and 200mL/min., respectively. The behavior of sodium oleate might be interfered by polyvalent cations such as $Ca^{2+}$. But when the concentration of $Ca^{2+}$ was less than 100mg/L, the interference effect did not appear. And when a typical cationic surfactant, cetyltrimethylammonium bromide(CTAB), was used, the collecting yield was less than that of sodium oleate, and the amount of foam was higher than sodium oleate. When 1mg/L of CTAB was added to the hanji sludge sample contained 1mg/L of $PAMID^{(R)}$, a dispersant, fibrous sludge was effectively coagulated, the flotation time was very short and the collecting yield was above 95%. But in the case, sodium oleate was inefficient.

  • The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and the counter ion binding constants (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of Tetradecyltrimethylammonium bromide (TTAB) with Polyoxyethylene(23) lauryl ether (Brij 35) in water were determined as a function of α1 (the overall mole fraction of TTAB) by the use of electric conductivity method and surface tensiometer method from 15 oC to 35 oC. Values of thermodynamic parameters (ΔGom, ΔHom, and ΔSom) for the micellization of TTAB/Brij 35 mixtures were calculated and analyzed from the temperature dependence of CMC values. The results say that the measured values of ΔGom are all negative at the whole measured condition but the values of ΔSom and ΔHom are positive or negative, depending on the measured temperature and α1.

  • In this study, a cationic gemini surfactant was synthesized using isosorbide, in order to modify the alkyl chain length in the range of C10~C16. The c.m.c and surface tension of the synthesized cationic gemini surfactant were measured to be in the ranges of 5.13 × 10-4~1.62 × 10-4 mol/L and 31.86~37.41 dyne/cm, respectively. The surface tension increased with increasing the length of the alkyl group. In addition, as the area per molecule occupied by the surfactant adsorbed on the interface increased with the reduced extent of adsorption, the bubble generation at the air-water interface decreased. The emulsifying capacity in benzene was maintained above 60 ± 5% after 8 h while that in soybean oil tended to decrease above 50 ± 5%. The performance was superior in benzene, a highly hydrophobic substance, and the emulsion stability was shown to be consistent beyond 1 h during the preparation of pre-emulsion in oil and water. The antimicrobial activity was dependent on the length of the hydrophobic chain of the synthesized cationic gemini surfactant due to the increased size of the clean zone in Escherichia coli (E.coli) and Staphylococcus aureus.

  • In this study, cationic gemini surfactants were synthesized by increasing the length of the hydrophobic chain and using 1,4-butanediol as a spacer, and the result was confirmed by $^1H-NMR$. The synthesized surfactant was a white powder, and Kraffts point was below $0^{\circ}C$. Surface tension measurements revealed that the evaluated critical micelle concentration (c.m.c) was $1.8{\times}10^{-3}{\sim}6.5{\times}10^{-4}mol/L$ with a surface tension of 22.5~26.1 dyne/cm at the c.m.c. The initial foam height for CG 14-6E-14 estimated by Ross-Miles method was 16 cm and after 5 minutes the height was 14 cm. It was confirmed that the initial foam force and foam stability were the highest. The foam test and emulsion stability of synthesized gemini cationic surfactants were also compared to those of cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB), a commoly used surfactant.

  • In this study, desorption characteristics of Cs from clay according to the hydrophobic alkyl chain length of the cationic surfactant were investigated. Alkyltrimethylammonium bromide was used as a cationic surfactant, and the length of the hydrophobic alkyl chain of the cationic surfactant was varied from -octyl to -cetyl. The adsorbed amount of the cationic surfactant on montmorillonite increased with the length of the hydrophobic alkyl chain, and intercalation of the cationic surfactant into the clay interlayer increased the interlayer distances. The Cs removal efficiency was also enhanced with increasing alkyl chain length, and the cationic surfactant with the cetyl group showed a maximum Cs removal efficiency of $992{\pm}2.9%$.
