The adsorption characteristics of cationic starches and starch-oligomers were investigated using the quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D). The adsorbed amount of modified starches was higher than that of cationic surfactants such as $C_{12{\sim}16}$ trimethylammonium bromide. Cationic starches did not show the tendency depending on the degree of cationic substitution and molecular weight. On the other hand, the softness of the adsorption layer increased with the molecular weight of cationic starches in a viscoelasticity terms. During the adsorption/desorption steps, the amount of adsorbed cationic surfactants was 4~9 times. On the other hand, the difference in the amount of adsorption of all the $C_1$ grafted cationic starches was just 0~50%. In addition, the rigidity of the adsorption layer of cationic surfactant in the desorption step decreased, while, that of cationic starches increased at the same condition.
In this study, the measurement of physical properties of ethylene oxide-propylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of a zwitterionic surfactant were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of DEP-OSA82-AO zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that DEP32-OSA82-AO and DEP34-OSA82-AO surfactants provide better softening effect at a pH of acidic or neutral condition than at an alkaline condition. This result indicates that both surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of acidic or neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.

In this study, the measurement of physical properties of 3 different ethylene oxide adducted zwitterionic surfactants were measured such as critical micelle concentration, surface tension, interfacial tension, contact angle, viscosity and foam stability. Also, the dual function characteristics of the zwitterionic surfactants were investigated by determining an isoelectric point, which were obtained using zeta potential measurement and QCM (quartz crystal microbalance) experiments. The isoelectric point of the synthesized zwitterionic surfactant determined by zeta potential measurement was close to that obtained by QCM experiment and both results have shown almost the same trend as that determined by the frictional property measured using an automated mildness tester. In particular, it has been observed that all three surfactants used during this study provide better softening effect at a pH of neutral condition than at an acidic or an alkaline condition. This result indicates that the synthesized surfactants act as a cationic surfactant at a pH of neutral condition and thus provide good softening effect during a rinsing cycle in the detergency process.
Concrete, the mixture of cement, sand, gravel and water, is a suspension substance extensively used to construct building materials. When a concrete mortar is applied to the underwater construction, the rheology of concrete is of great importance to its flow performance, placement, anti-washout and consolidation. In this research, the anti-washout and rheological properties of concrete have been investigated with concrete admixtures prepared by adding anionic surfactants, cationic surfactants, and polymeric thickeners. The concrete mortar formulated by pseudo-polymeric systems with the electrostatic association of anionic and cationic surfactants, showed high viscosities and suitable anti-washout properties, but poor pumpabilities. The addition of poly methyl vinyl ether to the mixed surfactant system exhibits synergistic effects by improving the concrete mortar properties of the concrete mortar such as fluidity, visco-elastic property, self-leveling, and anti-washout.
The critical micelle concentrations (CMC) and the counter ion binding constants (B) in a micellar state of the mixed surfactant systems of sodium dodecylbenzenesulfonate (DBS) with polyoxyethylene(4) lauryl ether (Brij 30) in water were determined as a function of 1 (the overall mole fraction of DBS) by the use of electric conductivity method and surface tensiometer method from 288 K to 308 K. Various thermodynamic parameters (Smo, Hmo, and Gmo) for the micellization of DBS/Brij 30 mixtures were calculated and analyzed from the temperature dependence of CMC values. The measured values of Gomare all negative but the values of Smo are positive in the whole measured temperature region. On the other hand, the values of Hmo are positive or negative, depending on the measured temperature and 1.
The micelle process was developed for pre-purifying paclitaxel from plant cell cultures of Taxus chinensis, giving a high purity and yield. The approach in this work was to transfer paclitaxel in the crude extract to an aqueous surfactant solution as a micelle, allowing organic solvents to be used for removal of lipids and non-polar impurities. In this work, the effects of various surfactants such as CPC, CTMAC, LTMAC, SDS, AOT, Tween, PEG, and Triton were examined on the yield, purity, and phase separation time in micelle process. Among these surfactants, CTMAC (5%, w/v) gave the best result in terms of paclitaxel yield (${\sim}99%$), purity (${\sim}21%$), and phase separation time (30 min). The use of micelles in the pre-purification process allows for rapid and efficient separation of paclitaxel from interfering compounds and dramatically increases the yield and purity of crude paclitaxel for subsequent purification steps.
Hydroxyapatite (HAP) containing hexadecyltrimethylammonium chloride (CTAC) as a cationic surfactant was prepared by a precipitation method. X-ray diffraction (XRD), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and micropore physisorption analyzer were used for characterizing the crystal phase, morphology and specific surface area of HAP and CTAC-HAP. After thermal treatment, the specific surface area of both pure HAP and CTAC-HAP were reduced. The sharp rod morphology of CTAC-HAP was changed into a round shape with a smaller aspect ratio after the heat treatment. The morphological change by thermal treatment was also observed in pure HAP. Therefore, the morphological change and decrease of the specific surface area suggested that pores from the removal of CTAC during thermal treatment were not retained.

The solubilization constants (Ks) of 4-halogenated aniline derivatives by cationic surfactants (DTAB, TTAB, and CTAB) were measured by the UV-Vis method. As a result, the Ks values decreased as the temperature increased for all the aniline derivatives and showed a tendency to increase as the radius of the halogen substituent and the hydrophobic length of surfactant increased. The calculated values of ΔGo and ΔHo for these solubilizations all showed negative values within the measured range, but all the ΔSo values showed positive values. For all the 4-halogenated anilines, the ΔGo values all tended to decrease as the temperature increased, but both values of ΔHo and ΔSo showed a tendency to increase. In addition, as the radius of the halogen substituent increased, the values of ΔHo and ΔSo tended to decrease in general. However, when the hydrophobic group length of the surfactant was increased, the values of these thermodynamic functions showed a tendency to increase in general, although it differed depending on the type of aniline derivative. From the changes of such functions, it was possible to estimate the type and strength of interactions between 4-halogenated aniline and micelle, and the location at which they were solubilized in the micelle.
In the present work, the interaction of lipid-based zwitterionic surfactant CDP-W with the vesicle membrane of phospholipids was investigated. For this purpose, interfacial properties such as critical micelle concentration (CMC) and surface tension were measured for the zwitterionic surfactant CDP-W and lecithin S100-3. The zeta potential of 1 wt% aqueous surfactant solutions was also measured as a function of pH to determine the iso-electric point of CDP-W surfactant, where the characteristic of CDP-W surfactant changes from a cationic surfactant to an anionic surfactant. Based on the iso-electric point measurement of CDP-W surfactant, the effects of pH change and CDP-W addition on the stability of S100-3 liposome systems were studied, such as average particle size, polydispersity index (PDI), and zeta potential. The effect of CDP-W on the fluidity characteristics of liposome membranes such as fluorescence anisotropy ratio, deformability, and melting point was investigated at pH 6 where the most stable liposomes were prepared to understand the effect of the fluidity of the liposome membrane on the encapsulation efficiency of active materials and the stability of liposome systems.
