  • The purpose of this study was to provide a better understanding of foreign-born Korean children's early school adjustment in the U.S. The interaction between the foreign-born Korean children in the U.S. and several of the children's microsystems, including family, school, and peer was assessed to meet this purpose. The study subjects were 43 foreign-bom Korean children who were sampled from Korean Sunday Language schools and who attended local schools in the Boston area, MA, USA. Quantitative analysis was conducted to identify which variables of interest predicted the early adjustment of this group of children. Furthermore, in-depth interviews were conducted with mothers of the children from the top and bottom groups 1) the most successful (in the top quartile) and 2) the least successful adjustment groups (in the bottom quartile) sorted by scores on the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-Revised (PPVT-R). The interview results were analyzed to elicit maternal perceptions/beliefs on education, in general, and those of home-school relationships, in specific. Several conclusions can be drawn from both the quantitative and qualitative analyses. The results of multiple regression and path analysis showed that the children's language development predicted their adjustment, but the effects of the other two variables, peer relationships and school experiences, on the adjustment of children, were mediated through the children's language. Moreover, common themes and patterns in the responses to a series of open-ended questions emerged from the interviews with the two groups of mothers. The two mothers of the least successful group were concerned about their children's future and school success, but thev did not show anv responsive attitudes toward achieving this goal. By contrast, the mothers from the most successful group were self-determined with regard to their children's education and had strong beliefs and values on how to raise their children in the new culture. The implications were discussed.

  • As the fertility level in Korea continues to drop with detrimental implications for the society, it has regained much attention of academics and policy makers. This study, building on the previous research on fertility behavior, attempts to explore the plan of young married women to have an additional child. While such plan is not always put into practice, it is still closely related to fertility behavior. In addition, it can provide useful clues to understanding behavior in the future. Utilizing a recent nationwide survey on marriage and fertility, the study analyzes the plan of further birth among young married women according to the number of their children. The results show that the plan for first child is quite universal as no difference is found by their socioeconomic and demographic characteristics. However, having plan for second child differs by the work status of husbands, presence of mother of young married women, and the sex of first child. The effects of first two factors suggest that young married women take into consideration stability of home economics and availability of care sharing. As for the plan for the child, the present and ideal sex composition of children appear most important. The results indicate that the mechanism of fertility progression differs by the current number of children. Thus, consideration of such differential would help us deepen our understanding of fertility behaviors and need to reflect in the study. The study also argues that comprehensive and systematic qualitative research should be accompanied by to capture complexity of fertility decision making process.

  • This study focused on differences in factors of subjective well-being between children who are raised at their own homes and those raised at the residential institutions. This study used two kinds of data sets, one from survey on subjective well-being of children in residential care supported by National Research Foundation of Korea, the other from survey on children's subjective well-being in Korea conducted by Social welfare research center in Seoul National University and Save the Children Korea. The results are as follows; There are no significant difference statistically between children raised at their own homes and children raised at residential institutions in children's subjective well-being, satisfaction with him/herself, and satisfaction with school. However, there is higher satisfaction with family in children raised at their own homes. On the other hand, there is higher satisfaction with community in children raised at residential institutions. There are difference factors effect on children's subjective well-being between the two groups. Most of all, satisfaction with him/herself is very important factor to improve children's subjective well-being in residential care.

  • This study was a survey study to provide the base data necessary to prepare efficient management plans for the mothers with disabled children by type, comparing degrees of disability acceptance, stress, coping method and wellness between mothers with physical functional disordered children and developmental disordered children. The study subjects were a mother who raises disordered children. Data collection was conducted from October 2018 to April 2019, and differences between the two groups were analyzed as t-test, ANOVA, and Pearson correlation. In results, Studies have shown that there are differences between the two groups as mothers with physical functional disordered children and mothers with developmental disordered children as degrees of disability acceptance, stress, treatment and wellness. Disability acceptance and coping method of mothers with physical functional disordered children (r=0.23, p=.033), disability acceptance and Wellness (r=0.51, p<.001) have shown positive correlations and disability acceptance and stress (r=-0.72, p<.001) have shown negative correlations. Disability acceptance and wellness (r=0.40, p<.001) of the mother with a developmental disordered child have shown a significant positive correlation, and disability acceptance and stress (r=-0.71, p<.001) have shown a significant negative correlations. The higher the degree of disability acceptance, the lower the stress level and the higher the coping method and wellness mothers with physical functional disordered children had. The higher disability acceptance, the lower stress degrees and the higher wellness degrees mothers with developmental disordered children had. In order to improve disability acceptance by mothers with physical functional disordered children, it was necessary to improve both coping methods and wellness with stress reducing strategy, while the mother with developmental disordered children were needed strategies to reduce stress and improve wellness.

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the experiences and perspectives of the self-reliance program participants through a longitudinal qualitative study from 2006 to 2012. Based on Grounded theory approach, it examines how participants managed their lives up to now status. Through open-coding process, 181 meanings were identified. Paradigm model shows that the goal of the self-reliance program can be viewed as causal condition. However, contextual factors such as poverty experiences and child-support affected the self-reliance program participants to adapt and stay in the program rather than actively participate in the market. The finding shows that the meaning of self-reliance are differently understood by policy makers and self-reliance program participants.

  • The resistance to dentistry is as old as the history of dentistry. Historically, dental treatment techniques have continued to evolve to minimize pain with effective treatment, but the negative perception of dentistry has not been reduced as much as the development of technology. Particularly, children have a lack of resistance to external stimuli, mental development and patience, and the degree of cooperation with dental care is reduced due to changes in parenting methods including parental influence, so can experience DFA(dental fear and anxiety) and DBMP(dental behavior management problem). Among the various stimuli experienced by the child in the dentist, psychological factors affecting the dentist, dental clinic, and social factors affect the formation of the relationship with the dentist. Especially in recent years, the addiction related to smartphone is emerging as a social problem, and the effects of smartphone addiction on the oral cavity and the effects on dental behavior are examined.

  • As an exploratory inquiry prior to developing a measure to assess Korean families with adolescents' family resilience, this study examined the construct validity of the family resilience measures that were developed in the U. S. Iowa Youth and Families Project(Conger & Elder, 1994): emotional support between spouses, problem solving style between spouses, and parenting behavior. The participants were 277 pairs of middle aged, middle class husbands and wives (554 individuals) who were the parents of first graders in middle schools in the metropolitan areas around Seoul. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis supported the construct validity, indicating that emotional support, problem solving style, and parenting behavior may be used as measures to assess Korean family resilience. However, further tests of convergent validity using various assessment methods and analytical procedures are needed to ensure the construct validity of family resilience measures.
