  • This study aims to discover patterns of Korean women's life course in terms of their life time sequence of family roles and economic activity. Primary factors for the change and diversity of family-work role sequence are also examined. Data used in this study is the Fourth Survey of Korean Women's Economic Activity which was conducted by Korean Institute of Women Development (KIWD) in 2002. According to the main results, five distinctive patterns of life course are to be disentangled for ever married women: First, doing simultaneously family and work roles with no maternal leave (13.7%); second, reentry into labor market after maternal leave (M type, 18.6%); third, no reentry into labor market after maternal leave (latent M type, 26.9%); fourth, first job entry after child rearing (23.5%); and finally, no work experience (17.3%). The relative composition of the respective life course has changed over marriage cohorts. M type including latent M type became a dominant life pattern among married women since marriage cohorts of 1980 and later. The share of married women who begin to work first after maternal role or have no work experience has declined with recent marriage cohorts. It is also noted that the share of women with simultaneous family and work roles has increased among marital cohorts of 1990 and later. Marriage cohort differences being controlled, life patterns significantly differ by women's educational level, existence of role model of working mother at growth, women's own and husbands' gender role attitude, and family economy. Finally, some policy concerns for gender role division of family and work are raised.

Data were collected from December 2014 to February 2015 for 3 months with a sample of 13 mothers of children with ADHD via in-depth interviews. Collected data was analyzed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. While they experience multiple negative feeling, there is a positive change with unresolved issues. The findings highlight the correct awareness of ADHD and incorporated therapies for mothers and children with ADHD to improve treatment retention. • This study explores the attitudes of infant care teachers towards child care centers for infants, and suggests improvements for free child care services for infants, with regard to the teaching principles of said teachers. Individual in-depth interviews were conducted with 26 infant care teachers. Most of the infant care teachers agreed that working mothers, but not stay-at-home mothers, should use child care centers. They also argued that, because child care for infants is free, (1) mothers have become more dependent on public child care, (2) mother's perception of child care centers has changed, and (3) people have exploited child care services. According to the teaching principles of these teachers, optimal childrearing for infants should involve the following: First, mothers themselves should take care of infants aged 0 to 2 years at home, when possible. Second, mothers using child care centers should form a childrearing partnership with the centers' teachers, and thus closely cooperate with them. Third, the role of infant care teachers should be understood as that of "the second mother." The highlight of this study is that it investigated the changes child care teachers have experienced as main providers of child care services for infants since the implementation of free, universal infant care, and suggested directions for improving child care services.

  • This study investigated factors affecting drinking in middle school students from an urban area populated with low-income families to provide data necessary for drinking prevention. The subjects consisted of 1,192 middle school students. Analysis of collected data was carried out by descriptive statistics and stepwise multiple regression using SPSS 19.0 software. The proportion of students who had drinking experience was 44.1%, among which 57.2% first experienced drinking during elementary school or earlier. The highest motivation for student's drinking was encouragement by parents at 48.9% while 12.0% of parents were indifferent to drinking by their children and 21.5% permitted drinking. Scores for subjects' loneliness, father's parenting, and mother's parenting were 36.71, 40.07, and 50.87, respectively. Factors affecting drinking were identified as school life, parent's attitude to children's drinking, and father's parenting. These results suggest that it is necessary to develop drinking prevention programs for middle school students in urban areas with high populations of low-income families as well as follow-up studies over wider urban areas of low-income population.
