  • With the development of industry and standard of living, the quantity of groundwater consumption has been increasing. For the analysis of groundwater, to determine the hydraulic parameters of aquifer is very important. Various numerical methods have been developed to solve aquifer tests and eliminate the subjectivity of traditional graphical type curve methods. The slope-matching method, which matches the slope of the Theis type curve to the slope of the field data, can be used to numerically solve pump tests for both leaky and nonleaky aquifers. A FORTRAN program on based slope-matching method was developed to obtain the transmissivity, storage coefficient, and leaky factor from pumping test data automatically. Results derived from published data show that the improved slope-matching method gives parameters close to the ones derived by the slope-matching method.

  • Final convergence of tunnel crown due to excavation have been well predicted by regression analysis which is expressed as a function of convergence curve on a time and distance dependent. In this study, the validity of the equations for shallow, wide tunnel was investigated by measurement and numerical analysis. Studied tunnel(Sansoo Tunnel) is located at the boundary of downtown and mountain park. Exponential predictions equation was better coincided with measured data than fractional equation for studied tunnel, although the ground was expected to be elasto-plastic. This is because weathered rock ground is changed elasto-plastic ground into elastic ground by multi-steel grouting and forepoling.

  • Flood flow characteristics of the Han River (from Goan to Indo Bridge) are analyzed using 1-dimensional St. Venant equations. NETWORK, a finite difference model, is used to calculate each term (local acceleration term, convective acceleration term, pressure force term, gravity force term, and friction force term) of the momentum equation and to analyze the flow characteristics. By the result of the study, as the general characteristics of flow in a channel that acceleration terms are very small and the other three terms are much greater is presented, three terms(pressure force term, gravity force term, friction force term) are to be main terms which decide the characteristics of flow. Specially in this region the acceleration term is noted so large that it cannot be ignored according to the shape of hydrograph and the region.

  • Single well injection withdrawal tracer tests with bromide were carried out at two wells developed in a horizontally heterogeneous fractured rock. The hydraulic conductivity of TW-1 well was 5 times larger than TW-2 well, and the average linear velocity of TW-2 well was 1.8 times faster than TW-1 well. The difference of hydrodynamic dispersions of two wells in the fractured rock was studied with the analysis of concentration breakthrough curves and cumulative mass recovery curves of bromide with withdrawal time, and the estimation of average travel distance, pore velocity, longitudinal dispersivity and longitudinal dispersion coefficient. The average travel distances of bromide were estimated to be 3.00 m in TW-1 well and 5.62 m in TW-2 well. The average pore velocities for the injection/withdrawal phase were estimated to be $4.31\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;m/sec$ in TW-1 well and $8.08\;{\times}\;10^{-4}\;m/sec$ in TW-2 well. Average travel distance and pore velocity were higher in TW-2 well because of small effective porosity. Longitudinal dispersivities were estimated to be 28.73 cm in TW-1 well and 18.49 cm in TW-2 well, and bromide transport was 1.55 times faster in TW-1 well. Longitudinal dispersion coefficients were estimated to be $5.14\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;m^2/sec$ in TW-1 well and $6.06\;{\times}\;10^{-6}\;m^2/sec$ in TW-2 well, and diffusion area was 1.18 times larger in TW-2 well.

  • This study introduced speical characteristics of an epidemiologic study on blood pressure and compared several statistical methods for evaluating the tracking phenomenon of blood pressure for Korean children. While correlation coefficients adjusted for measurement error are commonly used for the evaluation of tracking, it is hard to interpretate the results when correlation functions for lag-difference are not monotonous. McMahan defined a tracking as maintenance of relative rank over time and calculated tracking index usng growth curve model. The tracking index in McMahan's model is complicate to calculate, and it is hard to determine the degree of growth curve parameter. Blomqvist showed the relationship between the rate of change and the initial value. This concept could be extended for the evaluation of tracking. However, it is not so easy to interpretate the estimates in his model when those are non-positive.

  • The study was focused on developing a new model to estimate annual runoff. This model can be used to estimate the available water resources for ungaged catchments for long-term water resources development planning. Data used in the model development were daily rainfall and daily runoff of the sample basin with record length from 1945 to 1988 years in Korea. The sample basin selected by consideration whether the flow is virgin and quality of discharge data is good. As a result, 46 stage gaging station were selected. Annual runoff was determined by sum of daily runoff calculated by daily stage data of the sample basin. Also, the annual mean precipitation by using daily rainfall data was estimated and the annual runoff ratio for each sample basin was calculated, and the annual mean runoff ratio was estimated. The linear regression model was proposed and calibrated using auunal mean precipitation values and geomorphological characteristics of the basins. To verify reasonableness of this model, the regression model was applied to the gaging stations which have historical data.

  • Data from 122 pumping tests were obtained from 100 boreholes in granites, volcanic rocks, metamorphic rocks, and Cretaceous and Tertiary sedimentary rocks, and then were analyzed using AQTESOLV. Results from 86 of the 122 tests ($71\%$) have an analytical solution corresponding to Theis (1935), Cooper-Jacob (1946), Papadopulos-Cooper (1967), Hantush (1962), Moench (1985), or Hantush-Jacob (1955), whereas the remaining 36 results ($29.5\%$) do not correspond to any of the analytical methods. Of the 86 results, only 17 match the Theis and Cooper-Jacob methods, indicating that the basic methods fer pumping test analysis are useful far only $14\%$ of the total data. This suggests that analytical solutions derived using leaky boundary conditions are appropriate for the analysis of pumping test data in fractured aquifers in this study. Furthermore, the results show the importance of carefully selecting an appropriate model for the analysis of pumping test data. Results from the 122 pumping tests were also analyzed using the GRF model. Using the Barker method, the results show that 77 of the 122 tests ($63\%$) have dimensions ranging between 1.1-2.9. Of these 77 solutions, ($39(44.2{\%})$) have a fractional dimension of 1.1-1.9, ($26(6.5{\%})$) show 2-dimensional radial flow also applicable to the Theis method, and ($38(49.3{\%})$) have dimensions of 2.1-2.9. The results show that groundwater flows according to a fractional flow dimension in fractured aquifers.

  • As a trial to find an efficient technique for determining hydraulic conductivity, a test application of electrical conductivity measurement technique was made using a signal conditioning data acquisition system in borehole. The experiment was made in two test boreholes BM-2 and BM-3 which are located in the Experiment forests of Kangwon National University in Bongmyongri, Chunchon. We obtained series of electric conductivity variation curves after the beginning and completion of saline water injection using these two bore-holes as the pumping well and the observing well alternatively, The analysis of time series electrical conductivity data suggests kinds of valuable information about aquifer properties by holes and depths, and we could confirm the potential of this method as an efficient tool for in situ aquifer test.

  • MWNT/PMMA and MWNT/PDMAEMA nanocomposites were prepared using an atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP). The FTIR and XRD analysis results showed that the nanocomposites were composed of MWNTs grafted by either PMMA(PMMA-g-MWNTs) or PDMAEMA(PDMAEMA-g-MWNTs). A controlled living radical polymerization of ATRP was characterized by the thermogram analysis for the nanocomposites. The morphologies of prepared nanocomposites were analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Raman analysis results for the nanocomposites showed that there occurred covalent bonding between acrylic polymers and MWNTs.

  • This study was conducted to investigate and effects of shading treatment on photosynthetic activity of Acanthopanax senticosus. We investigated plant growth, light response curve and A-Ci curve to photosynthesis of A. senticosus at 55%, 75%, and 90% shading treatment. As results, the ratio of above-ground/under-ground biomass was increased at 75% shaded condition and showed highest dry biomass. Under shaded conditions, plants had lower chlorophyll a+b content and a/b ratio and also showed thinner leave. But shaded plants showed higher leaf area and higher total leaf area per a plant. This apparently indicates adapted responses to shaded treatment. Effects of shading treatments on photosynthetic activity were higher in apparent quantum yield, carboxylation efficiency, re-phosphrylation but lower in light compensation point. These results suggested that higher photosynthesis rates in shaded treatments were due to activated carboxylation efficiency. Shading treatment had lower water use efficiency thatn controls but still higher than other tree species.
