Analysis of Startup Characteristics for Turbo Pump Unit-Gas Generator Open Loop Test (터보펌프 조립체-가스발생기 연계 개회로 시험에서의 시동특성 분석)

  • This study fulfilled analysis of startup characteristics of Turbo pump unit-Gas generator open loop test from the viewpoint of simulation. The test results were investigated and the calculated results were compared to test results. The curve for RPM developing predicted by simulation agreed well with test result. The slope of transient combustion pressure of gas generator correspond with test result.

Through this process the pressures of the components of a propellant rise rapidly up to the operating point, and the components enter into a gas-generator. Combustion in the gas-generator occurs to keep the turbopumps working.   • Liquid rocket engines (LREs) are very complex systems that include combustion chambers, turbopumps, gas generators, ducts and tubes, valves and etc. Most components of the LREs require higher than or equal to level 6 IT (ISO Tolerance). The components along with pipe line and/or tubing must dispose not to interfere each other. In addition, effectiveness of maintenance and service after assembling should be considered when the allocation of the components are determined. Especially at the stage of the development, tolerance accumulations or unpredictable errors may result in misalignment and/or mismatches at interfaces of the parts. Namely, it is the engine assembling process that many inherent risks are realized and crises or incidents occur. Therefore, a rapid reaction system should be prepared. In this research, 7 tonf class liquid rocket assembling process was studied and actual building steps were introduced.

  • Turbopump-gas generator open-loop coupled tests are performed during the development of a 30tonf-LOx/Kerosene rocket engine. In the turbopump-gas generator open-loop tests, the propellants to gas generator are supplied from the outlets of turbopump, while the gas exhausted from the gas generator is vented out to the atmosphere, instead of being used to turbine driving. This paper presents the objectives, procedure, and results of the open-loop coupled test, in addition to a schematic representation of the test apparatus and the operating conditions for the test facility system and control system. The results of turbopump-gas generator open-loop coupled test confirm chill-down procedure, startup characteristics, nominal operability and smooth shutdown of the open-loop coupled Test Plant in test conditions simulating engine system operation environment.

  • For rockets using cryogenic liquid hydrogen or liquid oxygen, chilling is required to avoid cavitation and surge problems. Chilling is categorized by the initial chilling/filling stage and the low-temperature maintenance stage. In addition, to improve satellite insertion capability, a multi-ignition capability is required and accordingly chilling to prepare for the next ignition during low-gravity coasting is also required. This paper describes the overall aspects of filling and low temperature maintain marinating for the booster and the upper stage engine including chilling for multi-ignition.

Test schematic and test results of open-loop coupled tests are presented. In engine system operation environment simulating combustion chamber by flow control orifice, chill-down procedure, startup characteristics, nominal operability of turbopump+gas generator open-loop coupled Test Plant are confirmed The results of open-loop coupled test were used for the preparation on turbopump+gas generator closed-loop test.

  • A blisk with rotor shroud is usually adopted in LRE turbine to maximize its performance. However it experiences severe thermal load and resulting damage during engine stating and stop. Shroud splitting is devised to relieve thermal stress on the turbine rotor. Structural analysis confirmed the reduction of plastic strain at the blade hub and tip. However, split gap at the rotor shroud entails additional tip leakage and results performance degradation. In order to assess the effect of shroud split on the turbine performance, tests have been performed for various settings of shroud split. For the maximum number of shroud splitting, measured efficiency reduction ratio was 2.65% to the value of original shape rotor.

  • For the technology development of LOx/kerosene liquid rocket engine, turbopump-gas generator closed-loop coupled tests using 30tonf main engine components such as turbopump and gas generator except combustion chamber are performed. In the engine system operation environment, simulating combustion chamber by flow control units, the chill-down procedure, startup characteristics, nominal operability and smooth shutdown of turbopump+gas generator closed-loop coupled Test Plant are successfully confirmed. The serviceability of the turbopump and gas generator are evaluated. The feed-back control system for the turbopump rotational speed and gas generator mixture ratio are also verified. The results of closed-loop coupled test will be used as the technology development for the liquid rocket engine.

  • Thermal and structural finite element analyses were performed for the turbopump turbine bladed disk model with shroud of a liquid rocket engine. The only 1/80 part model was analyzed which consists of 3D eight node isoparametric solid elements. The applied loading history consists of a startup condition with a thermal spike and a steady state. Heat transfer coefficient on the blade was predicted using the commercial Navier-Stokes solver, Fluent. Transient thermal responses during startup and steady states were calculated using a 3D finite element code developed. Maximum stress and shroud tip displacement under the influence of centrifugal and thermal loading were also determined.
