Purpose: This study was carried out to evaluate the liquefaction potential of the land reclamation area in Incheon by using the ProShake program for long frequency Hachinohe seismic wave and short frequency Ofunato seismic waves to interpret ground response. Method: The interpretation results and the Modified Seed and Idriss method were used to evaluate the liquefaction potential. The liquefaction potential index which proposed by Iwasaki was calculated to be used as a guide line to represent the liquefaction evaluation results at the given location. The equivalent liquefaction factor of safety presented by Kang(1999) was used as a quantitative index to draw up the mapping of liquefaction potential. Results: This paper presents the mapping of liquefaction potential for the Incheon seaside reclamation area using both the liquefaction potential index and the equivalent liquefaction factor of safety. Conclution: As a result, the mapping of liquefaction based on the liquefaction potential index and equivalent liquefaction factor of safety shows similar distribution pattern.
In this study, a simple method to evaluate the seismic vulnerability of river levees was examined considering the structural characteristic of river levee, that is long, and the functional characteristic of river levee that performs temporary function against flood but is a permanent structure in the ordinary way. Considering the fact that one of the main failure modes of the levee during the earthquake are the settlement due to the strength reduction of the ground caused by the increase of the excess pore pressure in the levee body and foundation and the settlement due to liquefaction, the 2-dimensional section of the levee was regarded as the 1-dimensional section and the liquefaction potential index (LPI) for the regarded section was estimated. The estimated LPI was correlated with the seismic vulnerability of river levees. The relationship between the displacement of the levee crest caused by the earthquake and the seismic vulnerability of the levees was obtained from the results of previous researches and the correlation between the displacements of the levee crest computed by 2-dimensional dynamic coupled analyses and LPIs based on the results of 1-dimensional seismic response analyses was investigated. In connection with this correlation, as a result of examination of the correlation between LPI and the seismic vulnerability of the levee, it was concluded that the method for evaluation of the seismic vulnerability of the Korean river levee using LPI is applicable.
Due to the Pohang earthquakes in 2017, concerns are increasing that Korea is no longer safe from liquefaction, and needs the research to take proper measures for liquefaction. Liquefaction is defined as the loss of shear strength of the ground. In order to solve this problem, many studies, such as composing a liquefaction hazard map using Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI), have been conducted. However, domestic researches on the comparative analysis of liquefaction prediction results are not sufficient. Therefore, in this study, liquefaction hazard maps were composed using the standard penetration test results, shear wave velocity values, and cone penetration test results. After that, the precision was determined by comparing the calculated LPI using the geotechnical information and predicted LPI via spatial interpolation target. Based on the analysis results, the predicted LPI value using geotechnical information is more precise than using calculated LPI value.

Probabilistic liquefaction hazard map is now widely needed for engineering practice. Based on the Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI) calculated from liquefied and non-liquefied cases, we attempted to estimate probabilities of liquefaction induced ground failures using logistic regression. We then applied this approach for the regional area. LPIs were calculated based on 273 Standard Penetration Tests in the floodplains in the St. Louis area, USA and then interpolated using cokriging with the covariable of peak ground acceleration. Our result shows that some areas of $LPI{\geq}5$, due to soft soil layers and shallow groundwater table, appear probabilities of ground $failure{\geq}0.5$.

Liquefaction is a significant threat to structures on loose saturated sandy soil deposits in the event of an earthquake, and can often cause catastrophic damage, economic loss, and loss of life. Nevertheless, the Korean peninsula has for a long time been recognized as a safe region with respect to the hazard of liquefaction, as the peninsula is located in a moderate seismicity region, and there have been no reports of liquefaction, with the exception of references in some historical documents. However, some earthquakes that have recently occurred in different parts of the world have led to liquefaction in non-plastic silty soils, a soil type that can be found in many of the western coastal areas of Korea. In this study, we first present procedures for evaluating the liquefaction potential, and calculate the liquefaction potential index (LPI) distribution at two western coastal sites using both piezocone penetration test (CPTu) data and standard penetration test (SPT) data. The LPI is computed by integrating liquefaction potential over a depth of 20m, and provides an estimate of liquefaction-related surface damage. In addition, we compared the LPI values obtained from CPTu and SPT, respectively. Our research found that the CRR values from CPTu were lower than those from the SPT, particularly in the range between 40 and 120 for the corrected tip resistance, (qc1N)CS, from the CPTu, or in the range of CRR less than 0.23, resulting in relatively high LPI values. Moreover, it was observed that the differences in the CRR between the two methods were relatively higher for soils with high fine contents.

Recently, the number of damages on social infrastructure has increased due to natural disasters and the frequency of earthquake events that are higher than magnitude 3 has increased in South Korea. Liquefaction was found near the epicenter of a 5.4 magnitude earthquake that occurred in Pohang, South Korea, in 2017. To explore increases in soil moisture index due to soil liquefaction, changes in the remote exploration index by the land cover before and post-earthquake occurrence were analyzed using liquefaction feasibility index and multi-cyclical Landsat-8 satellite images. We found that the soil moisture index(SMI) in the liquefaction region immediately after the earthquake event increased significantly using the Normal Vegetation Index(NDVI) and Surface Temperature(LST).

In this study, the seismic risk has been evaluated by setting the bedrock acceleration to 0.154g which, was taking into consideration that the earthquake return period for the buried electric power tunnels in the metropolitan area to be 1,000 years. In this case, the risk assessment during the earthquake was carried out in three stages. In the first stage, the site classification was performed based on the site investigation data of the target area. Then, the LPI(Liquefaction Potential Index) was applied using the site amplification factor. After, candidates were selected using a hazard map. In the second stage, risk assessment analysis of seismic response are evaluated thoroughly after the recalculation of the LPI based on the site characteristics from the boring logs around the electric power area that are highly probable to be liquefied in the first stage. The third Stage visited the electric power tunnels that are highly probable of liquefaction in the second stage to compensate for the limitations based on the borehole data. At this time, the risk of liquefaction was finally evaluated based off of the reinforcement method used at the time of construction, the application of seismic design, and the condition of the site.
Following the 2016 Gyeongju earthquake, the Pohang Earthquake occurred in 2017, and the south-east region in Korea is under the threat of an earthquake. Especially, in the Pohang Earthquake, the liquefaction phenomenon occurred in the sedimentation area of the coast, and preparation of countermeasures is very important. The soil liquefaction can affect the underground facilities directly as well as various structures on the ground. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the liquefaction risk of facilities and the structures against the possible earthquakes and to prepare countermeasures to minimize them. In this study, we investigated the seismic liquefaction risk about the electric power utility tunnels in the southeast area where the earthquake occurred in Korea recently. In the analysis of seismic liquefaction risk, the earthquake with return period 1000 years and liquefaction potential index are used. The liquefaction risk analysis was conducted in two stages. In the first stage, the liquefaction risk was analyzed by calculating the liquefaction potential index using the ground survey data of the location of electric power utility tunnels in the southeast region. At that time, the seismic amplification in soil layer was considered by soil amplification factor according to the soil classification. In the second stage, the liquefaction risk analysis based on the site response analyses inputted 3 earthquake records were performed for the locations determined to be dangerous from the first step analysis, and the final liquefaction potential index was recalculated. In the analysis, the site investigation data were used from the National Geotechnical Information DB Center. Finally, it can be found that the proposed two stage assessments for liquefaction risk that the macro assessment of liquefaction risk for the underground facilities including the electric power utility tunnel in Korea is carried out at the first stage, and the second risk assessment is performed again with site response analysis for the dangerous regions of the first stage assessment is reasonable and effective.
After the Gyeongju earthquake, which was the largest in the history of measuring instruments in Korea in 2016, and after the Pohang earthquake, where the pillars of pallet structures were destroyed in 2017, the seismic design standards for all domestic facilities have been revised and supplemented. In particular, during the investigation of the Pohang Earthquake damage cases, liquefaction damage that occurs mainly in countries with strong earthquakes such as the United States, Japan, and New Zealand was found, so studies are being conducted in depth to improve seismic design standards. In this study, the liquefaction potential assessment in the recently revised seismic design standard for port and harbor was reviewed, and an applicability review was conducted focusing on the newly cited liquefaction potential index (LPI). At this time, by varying the thickness and location of the sandy soil where liquefaction can occur, the LPIs for various cases were calculated and compared. Also, 22 LPI values in the practical port area were compared and reviewed along with performance of the liquefaction assessment based on the site response analysis using the boring-hole data of the actual 22 port sites.
