  • Low molecular weight polybutadiene (liquid BR) improves the filler dispersion in a silica-filled styrene-butadiene rubber (SBR) compound. In the present work, influence of molecular weight or the liquid BR on properties of a silica-filled SBR compound was studied. Minimum and maximum torques in the rheocurve for the compound containing the liquid BR with higher molecular weight (HLBR) are lower than those for the compound containing the liquid BR with lower one (LLBR) while the delta torques are nearly the same. Mooney scorch time of the compound containing HLBR is faster than that of the compound containing LLBR. Modulus or the compound containing HLBR is lower than that of the compound containing LLBR while tensile strength of the former is higher than that of the latter. The elongation at break of the former is also longer than that of the latter. Stability for the thermal aging at $90^{\circ}C$ for 3 days is less favorable for the former than for the latter.

  • Seabed beneath and near the coastal structures may undergo large excess pore water pressure composed of oscillatory and residual components in the case of long durations of high wave loading. This excess pore water pressure may reduce effective stress and, consequently, the seabed may liquefy. If the liquefaction occurs in the seabed, the structure may sink, overturn, and eventually fail. Especially, the seabed liquefaction behavior beneath a gravity-based structure under wave loading should be evaluated and considered for design purpose. In this study, to evaluate the liquefaction potential on the seabed, numerical analysis was conducted using 2-dimensional numerical wave tank. The 2-dimensional numerical wave tank was expanded to account for irregular wave fields, and to calculate the dynamic wave pressure and water particle velocity acting on the seabed and the surface boundary of the structure. The simulation results of the wave pressure and the shear stress induced by water particle velocity were used as inputs to a FLIP(Finite element analysis LIquefaction Program). Then, the FLIP evaluated the time and spatial variations in excess pore water pressure, effective stress and liquefaction potential in the seabed. Additionally, the deformation of the seabed and the displacement of the structure as a function of time were quantitatively evaluated. From the analysis, when the shear stress was considered, the liquefaction at the seabed in front of the structure was identified. Since the liquefied seabed particles have no resistance force, scour can possibly occur on the seabed. Therefore, the strength decrease of the seabed at the front of the structure due to high wave loading for the longer period of time such as a storm can increase the structural motion and consequently influence the stability of the structure.

  • Mobile bacterial particles can act as carriers and enhance the transport of hydrophobic contaminants in ground water by reducing retardation effects. Because of their colloidal size and favorable surface conditions, bacteria can act as efficient contaminant carriers. When such carriers exist in a porous medium, the system can be thought of as three phases: an aqueous phase, a carrier phase, and a stationary solid matrix phase. Contaminant can be present in either or all of these phases. In this study, a mathematical model based on mass balances is developed to describe the transport and fate of biodegradable contaminant in a porous medium. Bacterial mass transfer mechanism between aqueous and solid matrix phases, and contaminant mass transfer between aqueous and bacterial phases are represented by kinetic models. Governing equations are non-dimensionalized and solved to analyze the bacteria facilitated contaminant transport. The numerical results of the facilitation effect match favorably with experimental data reported in the literature. Results show that the contaminant transport can be described by local equilibrium assumption when Damkohler numbers are larger than 10. Significant sensitivities to model parameters, particularly bacterial growth rate and influent bacterial concentration, were discovered.

  • Liquefaction occurs by a temporal loss of sediment strength as a consequence of increased pore water pressure during the re-arrangement of unconsolidated, granular sediments. Liquefaction is dependent on the physical properties of the sediments and cause surface cracks, landslide, and the formation of soft-sediment deformation structures(SSDS). SSDS is formed by the combined action of the driving force and deformation mechanism(liquefaction, thixotropy, and fluidization) that is triggered by endogenic or exogenic triggers. So research on the SSDS can unravel syndepositional geological events. If detailed sedimentologic analysis together with surrounding geological context suggest SSDS formed by earthquakes, the SSDS provide a clue to unravel syndepositional tectonic activities and detailed paleoseismological information(> Mw 5) including earthquakes that leave no surface expression.

  • Characteristics of pyrolysis and liquid product distribution of ABS plastics have been studied in the thermogravimetric(TG) reactor and bomb microreactor. Pyrolysis reactions were performed at temperature $400\sim450^{\circ}C$ and yield of each pyrolytic product was obtained by the weight measurement method. The molecular weight distributions of liquid products were determined by the GC-SIMDIS method. It was observed that solid residue which could not be detected in the thermogravimetric experiments was significantly formed in the batch-type microreactor. It was found that the yield and average molecular weight of liquid products were decreased with the increase of reaction temperature and time. but the formation of styrene monomer was significantly increased. The chain-end scission rate parameters were determined to be 54.1kcal/mole far ABS by the Arrhenius plot.

  • The two important problems to solve before the industrialization of the iodine-sulfur (IS) process are (i) methods to separate $H_2SO_4$ and HI and (ii) to maintain constant components. However undesired reaction was occurred and $H_2S$ and S were formed during the Bunsen reaction. It is necessary to forbid the undesired reaction between $H_2SO_4$ and HI by separating the two acids into two different layers. The experimental conditions for the present study was chosen in such a way that to achieve the separation between the two acids and minimize the side reaction. $H_2S$ formation was reduced and the separations of the two liquids were occurred at $H_2O$ molar fraction from 0.86 to 0.909. But the separations between the two liquids were not occurred at $H_2O$ molar fraction more than 0.92.

  • Due to the Pohang earthquakes in 2017, concerns are increasing that Korea is no longer safe from liquefaction, and needs the research to take proper measures for liquefaction. Liquefaction is defined as the loss of shear strength of the ground. In order to solve this problem, many studies, such as composing a liquefaction hazard map using Liquefaction Potential Index (LPI), have been conducted. However, domestic researches on the comparative analysis of liquefaction prediction results are not sufficient. Therefore, in this study, liquefaction hazard maps were composed using the standard penetration test results, shear wave velocity values, and cone penetration test results. After that, the precision was determined by comparing the calculated LPI using the geotechnical information and predicted LPI via spatial interpolation target. Based on the analysis results, the predicted LPI value using geotechnical information is more precise than using calculated LPI value.
