  • Animation, presenting laughing, tears and inspiration to the audience, can be classified into several genres according to the structure of scenario and storytelling in the same ways as for movie. This classification of scenario genre and scenario writing is based on the writing for a play. Scenario writing and genre classification that were discussed mainly in the movie theory books has been applied to the animation in spite of the difference of the production technique and storylines. Animation finds its academic values as a movie art due to its frame-by-frame filming technique and the diversity in the production. Since the number of scenario writers for animation is much smaller than that of movie in Korea, it is needed to set an academic basis for the classification of genre and scenario writing. In this study, academic basis for the classification of the genre by the analyzing the animation works.

  • In this paper, we propose an efficient technique for the animation of flexible thin objects. Mass-spring model was employed to represent the flexible objects. Till now, many techniques have used the mass-spring model to generate plausible animation of soft objects. A straight-forward approach to the animation with mass-spring model is explicit Euler method, but the explicit Euler method has serious disadvantage that it suffers from 'instability problem'. The implicit integration method is a possible solution to overcome the instability problem. However, the most critical flaw of the implicit method is that it involves a large linear system. This paper presents a fast animation technique for mass-spring model with approximated implicit method. The proposed technique stably updates the state of n mass-points in O(n) time when the number of total springs are O(n). We also consider the interaction of the flexible object and air in order to generate plausible results.

  • Recently, practice education using virtual medical simulation has been applied to real clinical environment by enhancing the learning efficiency. Specially, in minimally invasive surgery, the necessity of virtual surgery medical simulation has been increased. Realistic bleeding animation, which represents bleeding special effects frequently occurred in virtual medical simulation environment, has not been proposed yet. In this paper, we propose realistic real-time bleeding animation. For bleeding simulation, proposed method calculates main and effective bleeding regions along the main bleeding direction vector to represent naturalistic bleeding effect. In addition, for bleeding rendering, proposed method uses sigmoid function to impose weights of vertex opacities for the smooth opacity change so that the results of bleeding animation is realistic. Proposed method improves the sense of the real and absorption in virtual surgery medical simulation so that the education efficiency of doctors and students using medical simulation can be enhanced.

  • The level-of-detail (LoD), which is a method of reducing polygons on mesh, is one of the most fundamental techniques in real-time rendering. In this paper, we propose a novel level-of-detail technique applied to the virtual character's motion (Motion LoD). The movement of a virtual character can be defined as the transformation of each joint and it's relation to the mesh. The basic idea of the proposed 'Motion LoD' method is to reduce number of joints in an articulated figure and minimize the error between original and simplified motion. For the motion optimization, we propose an error estimation method and a linear system reconstructed from this error estimation for a fast optimization. The proposed motion simplification method is effectively useful for motion editing and real-time crowd animation.

  • This study suggests a model of experimental visual artworks with interactive art forms in which 2-D paintings are transformed to interactive 3-D animation works. Multimedia programming was employed to evolve objective still paintings to the animation of computer 3-D images with respect to visual ideas derived from visual components in the still painting and to response to the reactions users. The format and technique of the art works are based upon the contents developed by the author and the research materials are selected from the surrealistic paintings of tile world-famous Belgian painter, Rene Magritte. In the present paper, following topics are discussed in detail: a study of various visual cases occurring in transforming still paintings to animation works containing interactive components; a study of 3-D imaging and image processing techniques to transform 2-D paintings to 3-D images; animation techniques for interaction and overall structuring techniques; multimedia programming and user interface.

  • This research describes render pass synthetic techniques required to use for the effectiveness of them in 3D animation synthetic technology. As the render pass is divided by property and synthesized after rendering, elaborate, rapid synthesis can be achieved. In particular, occlusion pass creates a screen as if it had a soft, light shading, expressing a sense of depth and boundary softness. It is converted into 2D image through a process of pass rendering of animation projects created in 3D space, then completed in synthetic software. Namely, 3D animation realizes the completeness of work originally planned through compositing, a synthetic process in the last half. To complete in-depth image, a scene manufactured in 3D software can be sent as a synthetic program by rendering the scene by layer and property. As recently the occlusion pass can express depth notwithstanding conducting GI rendering of 3D graphic outputs, it is an important synthetic map not omitted in the post-production process. Nonetheless, for the importance of it, currently the occlusion pass leaves much to be desired for research support and books summarizing and analyzing the characteristics of properties, and the principles and usages of them. Hence, this research was aimed to summarize the principles and usages of occlusion map, and analyze differences in the results of synthesis. Furthermore, it also summarized a process designating renderers and the map utilizing the properties, and synthetic software usages. For the future, it is hoped that effective and diverse latter expression techniques will be studied beyond the limitation of graphic expression based on trends diversifying technique development.

  • This paper show that we analyze the mise en scene of animation based on the theory of mise en scene in film. The mise en scene of animation has a large range of utilization in contrast to film. This affects the development of film synthesized with an actuality film. The theory of mise en scene of early realistic film director is extended by the animation techniques. And the theory of mise en scene in digital film is raised newly. The mise en scene in animation has the property that ail elements Is represented in one frame. And then this has a success in different aesthetics. The problems of in-country animation - the absence of production in the present condition - is to be achieved by the production using mise en scene.

  • Simulacra theory as propounded by Jean Baudrillard in his seminal treatise, "Simulacra and Simulation," explores the significance of images, media and art in contemporary culture. Its central theoretical premise is the simulacrum, a sign or symbol that plays a crucial role in constructing perceived reality but which lacks a real-world referent. In Michel Gondry creates simulacra in the form of hallucinatory dream imagery by combining stop-motion animation and live-action elements. As experimental film-making that combines analog and minimum digital technologies, the result is a tour-de-force of synchronization. This study analyzes the film's technique and expressive content and, by adopting simulacra theory as a conceptual framework, aims to provide a better understanding of Gondry's work.

  • As obtaining information via the Internet has increased recently, the importance of web-based user interface more than ever is being emphasized. The purpose of this study is to improve the sliding structures of submenu in pull-down menu for improving web user interface. Animation techniques applied to the submenu of the pull-down menus that are being used at many web sites have very monotonous sliding structures. In order to solve these problems, a new sliding algorithm based on enlarging/reducing and moving animation techniques with direction control in pull-down menu is proposed. As a result, the proposed method can not only improve visual effects significantly but be also easily applied to the implementation of the web-based user interface in comparison with the previous pull-down menus. Finally, experiments on application of the proposed sliding algorithm to responsive image slider show that the proposed method can achieve good results. Further studies taking into account performance are needed to implement web-based interactive contents using the proposed method.
