  • When the ultimate strength of a concrete flexural member is evaluated, the effect of member size is usually not considered. For various types of loading, however, the strength always decreases with the increment of member size. In this paper the size effect of a flexural compression member is investigated by experiments. For this purpose, a series of C-shaped specimens subjected to axial compressive load and bending moment was tested using three different sizes of specimens with a compressive strength of 528 kg/$cm^2$. According to test results the size effect on flexural compressive strength was apparent, and more distinct than that for uniaxial compressive strength of cylinders. Finally a model equation was derived using regression analyses with experimental data.

  • Current design codes regarding compression lap splice dose not utilize merits of the improved strength of ultra-high strength concrete. Especially, a compression lap splice can be calculated longer than a tension lap splice according to the codes because they do not consider effects of strength of concrete and transverse reinforcement. Design equation is proposed for compression lap splice in 40 to 70 MPa of compressive strength of concrete. The proposed equation is based on 51 specimens. Through two-variable non-linear regression analysis of measured splice strengths, a splice strength equation is derived, which is converted into a splice length equation.

  • As the inventory of aged apartments is expected to increase explosively, the importance of maintenance to improve the durability of concrete facilities is increasing. Concrete compressive strength is a representative index of durability of concrete facilities, and is an important item in the precision safety diagnosis for facility maintenance. However, existing methods for measuring the concrete compressive strength and determining the maintenance of concrete facilities have limitations such as facility safety problem, high cost problem, and low reliability problem. In this study, we proposed a model that can predict the concrete compressive strength through images by using deep convolution neural network technique. Learning, validation and testing were conducted by applying the concrete compressive strength dataset constructed through the concrete specimen which is produced in the laboratory environment. As a result, it was found that the concrete compressive strength could be learned by using the images, and the validity of the proposed model was confirmed.

  • The strength of concrete is one of the most important parameters in evaluating the properties of concrete. Compressive strength of concrete has been widely used because of its convenience of experiments and generality. Compressive strength of concrete varies according to materials and curing conditions. Even with the same materials, the strength varies according to the curing conditions. Therefore, if we want to know the strength of concrete from the construction field, we have to put it in exactly the same curing condition with the construction field. But it is impossible to make the exactly same curing conditions in the laboratory. Also damages occur in order to measure the strength of concrete, because the core hat to be made into the pavement. To overcome these limits, many studies of nondestructive method have already been researched. It was already proven that shear wave velocity was very closely related to the compressive strength. In this study, three different curing temperatures with the same mixture paste were used, and compressive strength and shear wave velocity, according to the aging were measured. The relationship between these two parameters was examined. As results, curing temperature affected the compressive strength and the shear wave velocity, but did not affect the relation between them.

  • This paper describes an experimental research on the structural behavior and the ultimate strength of longitudinally stiffened plates subjected to local, distortional, or mixed-mode buckling under compression. The stiffened plate undergoes local, distortional, or interactive local-distortional buckling according to the flexural rigidity of the plate's longitudinal stiffeners and the width-thickness ratios of the sub-panels of the stiffened plate. A significant post-buckling strength in the local and distortional modes affects the ultimate strength of the longitudinally stiffened plate. Compression tests were conducted on stiffened plates that were fabricated from 4mm-thick SM400 steel plates with a nominal yield stress of 235MPa. A simple strength formula for the Direct Strength Method based on the test results was proposed. This paper proves that the Direct Strength Method can properly predict the ultimate strength of stiffened plates when the local buckling and distortional buckling occur simultaneously or nearly simultaneously.

  • Many researchers have reported that adding steel fiber to concrete improved its tensile and flexural strength significantly, but relatively few studies have been made on the compressive behavior of steel fiber-reinforced concrete. It is still less in case of high strength steel fiber-reinforced cementitious composites(SFRC). The main objective of this research is to examine the effect of adding steel fiber on the compressive strength of high strength SFRC using fiber reinforcing index(RI, $V_f(I_f/d_f)$). It was found from the study that compressive strength was noticeably increased in proportion to RI. In conclusion, the relationship between Reinforcing Index(RI) and compressive strength in case of high strength steel fiber-reinforced cementitious composites was suggested.

  • This study estimates the performance of steel spirals according to the compressive strength of the concrete. A total of 24 confined concrete cylinders ($150{\times}300mm$) were cast and tested under monotonic concentric compression. The main test parameters were the yield strength of spiral reinforcements and the compressive strength of the concrete. To effectively evaluate the confinement effect according to the yield strength of steel spirals, the external diameter of steel spirals was designed to be same as the diameter of specimen. The experimental results indicated that the performance of confinement of steel spirals increased as the yield strength of spiral reinforcement increased and the compressive strength of the concrete decreased. Furthermore, existing analytical models were used for predicting the stress versus axial strain relationships of specimens tested in this study. It can be concluded that the accuracy of the analytical models deteriorated as the yield strength of steel spirals and the compressive strength of the concrete increased.
