  • Compressive strength reduction characteristics of 4 different linerboards(SC, KA, SK and IK) as influenced by temperature and humidity were investigated by ring crush test. No significant effect of temperature on the reduction of compressive strength was found for samples prepared at 5$^{\circ}C$ and 30$^{\circ}C$. At the relative humidity of 66 percents, IK linerboard showed the lowest reduction of the compressive strength. At the relative humidity of 93 percents, KA linerboard lost 40 percents of its initial compressive strength while SK linerboard lost its strength up to 56 percents. The result indicated that KA linerboard was the most cost effective and material with the highest compressive strength among tested linerboards.

  • Although a compression splice length does not need to be longer than a tension splice length due to end bearing effect, current design codes impose a longer compression lap splice than a tension lap splice in high strength concrete. Hence, new criteria for the compression lap splice including concrete strength effect need to be found for economical design of ultra-high strength concrete. An experimental study has been conducted using column specimens with concrete strength of 80 and 100 MPa with transverse reinforcement. The test results showed that splice strengths improved when the amount of transverse reinforcement increased. However, end bearing strength did not increase when larger amount of transverse reinforcement is provided within the spliced zone. Therefore, the splice strength enhancement was attributed to the improvement of bond. From regression analysis of 94 test results including specimens made with concrete strength of 40 and 60 MPa, a new design equation is proposed for compression lap splice in the concrete compressive strength ranging from 40 to 100 MPa with transverse reinforcement. By using the proposed equation, the incorrect design equations for lap splice lengths in tension and compression can be corrected. In addition, the equation has a reliability equivalent to those of the specified strengths of materials.

  • This paper describes the effect of aggregate size on compressive behavior of high-strength steel fiber reinforced concrete. The Specified compression strength is 60 MPa and the range of fiber volume fraction is 0~2%. The main variable is the aggregate size, which was used for the aggregate size of 8 and 20 mm. So, ten concrete mixtures were prepared and tested to evaluate the fresh and hardened properties of SFRC at curing ages (7, 14, 28, 56 and 91 days), respectively. Items estimated in this study are the fresh properties (air contents, slump), hardened properties (compressive strength, modulus of elasticity, post-peak response and compressive toughness). As a result, the aggregate size has little effect on the compressive strength and modulus of elasticity. On the other hand, the ductile behavior was shown after post peak and the compressive toughness was increasing as decreasing the aggregate size. These effects are clearly represented in the fiber volume fraction 2%, which are the point appeared fiber ball. It is considered that the decreasing the aggregate size has effect on the fiber dispersibility.

  • For the design of compression anchor, three things should be considered. The first is a resistance force by skin friction, the second is a tension strength of tendon, and the third is a compressive strength of grout. Especially, compressive strength of grout is the most important design parameter of compression anchor. When compression anchor is pulled out from the ground, the compressive strength of grout increases by confining pressure of ground($\sigma_{tg$). Here, $\sigma_{tg$ is the confining pressure which is produced by earth pressure at rest and by lateral expansion of grout. We call this phenomenon of increase of confining pressure "poisson effect". In this paper, the design method of compression anchor called SSC anchor and the computer program for the design are developed through compression tests of anchor body grout.ody grout.

  • Column specimens were constructed with main parameters significantly affecting the strength of the compression lap splice, such as lap length, spacing of lapped bars, amount and location of transverse reinforcements, and concrete strength. An experimental study has been conducted with column specimens in concrete strength of 40 to 60 MPa. Diameters of lapped reinforcing bars are 22 mm. An axial load was monotonically applied to the column specimens. All specimens failed in a brittle sudden manner and cover concrete was blasted out at maximum load. Compression lap splice strengths of specimens were evaluated from strains measured at the beginning of the lap length. Effects of the main parameters on the strengths of compression lap splice are assessed. Similarly to strengths of tension lap slice, the compression splice strength is found to be affected by lap length, spacing of lapped bars, transverse reinforcements.

  • This study investigates the compressive strength of high-strength cement composites with 64 mixture designs and 2 curing conditions. The cement composites were designed with varying water-to-binder ratios, silica fume content to cement, and binder content per unit volume of cement composite to explore compressive strength development depending on its mix design. An increase in the water-to-binder ratio decreased the compressive strength of the composites, having consistency with the trend in normal concrete. The compressive strength increased with ages at an ambient curing temperature, but it was not identified at high-temperature curing. The compressive strength development was negligible in case that silica fume content to OPC is 15%~25%, but a decrease in the con ten t below 15% reduced compressive stren gth. It was more obvious in the specimen of low water-to-binder ratio. The specimen with 840kg/m3 of binder content per unit volume had the highest compressive strength in this study, and the decrease in binder content reduced the compressive strength of high strength cement composites in low silica fume content.

  • In this study, it was examined a strength characteristic of organic acid material that is eco-friendly and low energy as a soil improving material. The object of this study is to analysis of strength changes with observing the clay mixed organic acid material through the unconfined compression strength test and triaxial compression test during 28 days. As a result of the tests, the strength of clay mixed organic acid material is increased when the more ages are prolonged, the more organic acid material mixture ratio growed. Therefore, in grasping the strength improvement effects of clay by organic acid material mixing, it confirmed that organic acid material as soil improving material is effective through unconfined compression strength test and triaxial compression test. Through this test, the definite strength increase is confirmed according to the mixture of the organic acid material and the possibility of soil improvement is also confirmed based on this result. From now on, detailed examination and field test will help closely to definite strength characteristics.

  • Compression splices are required for all compression members in almost all of the floors in high-rise buildings. Therefore, a clear understanding of the behavior of compression splices can provide a rational design of compression splices. Tests of compression splices with bearing only and bond only cases were conducted to investigate the component resistance characteristics of compression splices. Test results showed that the circumferential tensile stresses induced by bearing and bond overlapped at the end of the splice length deterred bond and bearing splices from developing target splicing strength when both normal bond and bearing splices were used. In particular, the bearing strength was more significantly reduced than the bond strength since the bearing relied on the limited area near the end of the splice length. However, the strength of the normal splice was always higher than the strength of the bond only or the bearing only case. Consequently, the study results showed that splice strength in compression cannot be improved by means of removing bond or bearing. In addition, the bond strength in bond only splices was nearly same as the bond strength in tension splices and the strength increase of compression splice is attributed to end bearing only characteristic.

  • Strength and compressibility characteristics of Light-Weighted Foam Soil (LWFS) are experimentally investigated in the paper. LWFS is composed of the dredged soils, cement and air foam to reduce unit-weight and to increase compressive strength. For these purposes, both unconfined compression tests and triaxial compression tests are carried out fer artficially prepared specimens of LWFS with various initial water contents, cement contents, mixing ratio of silty dredged soils and different confining stresses. The experimental results of LWFS indicate that the stress-strain relationship and the compressive strength are strongly influenced by cement contents rather than intial water contents of the edged soils. In this paper, the normalizing scheme considering the ratio of initial water contents, cement contents, and air foam contents has been proposed to evaluate the relationship between compressive strength of LWFS and a normalized factor.
