  • It is necessary to study more integrated and objective method of urban compactness evaluation. Accordingly, the author examined precedent study and references related to the theory of compact city with the aim of deducing the urban planning factors from them. And then, these factors are objectified through the survey and interview with experts, and each of the factors is given a weighting by the AHP(Analytic Hierarchy Process) Method. Based on these evaluation model, the urban compactness of Korean Metropolitan Cities such as Busan, Incheon, Daegu, Gwangju, Daejeon, Ulsan, are analyzed their relative gap. The result of this study, as a foundational data for decision-making on the urban policy, could be useful for compact city planning such as regeneration of old town center etc.

  • Recently, Korea has been experiencing a problem of population decline, therefore the transition to a compact spatial structure is being urged. However, what is required is not just physical compression, but a compact city that also considers connectivity, in view of the changes in today's demographic and industrial structure. From this point of view, this study measures the compressibility of domestic cities suffering from extinction risk due to low birth rates, aging population, and population decline, and examined the spatial structure characteristics. In addition to the compressibility evaluation index used in previous studies, the compressibility of six indicators (population, land use, service accessibility, transport accessibility, connectivity, and concentration) was compared and analyzed, and a comprehensive compression index was calculated. The analysis results, based on the comprehensive compression index, classified 2.3% cities in the first grade, 4.6% in the second grade, 16.09% in the third grade, 43.68% in the fourth grade, and 33.33% in the fifth grade areas. Currently, the urban characteristics affecting the compactness index differ from region to region. Therefore, it is necessary to establish measures and policies for extinction risk considering the influence of each region's compactness index. This study is meaningful in that connectivity was considered using spatial syntax, and the compactness of cities at risk of extinction was compared and analyzed quantitatively. It is expected that this study will be used as basic data to establish the direction and action strategy for extinction risk cities.

  • Long-distance commuting is a problem as people living in Gyeonggi-Incheon contitue to commute to Seoul in the Seoul metropolitan area. To solve this problem, policies in the region are aiming for a self-sufficient zone formation plan and a compact city. However, urban problems caused by such long-distance commuting continue. This appears to be due to excessive density and Seoul-dependent networks. However, existing studies have focused on individual cities despite the importance of inter-city interactions, and had limitations in not considering the characteristics of the Seoul-dependent networks. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to empirically analyze the effect of the compactness on commuter travels by comprehensively considering the interactions between cities within the region using multiple regression. As a result of the analysis, it was found that that commuting efficiency increases when a network of more than a certain size is formed, and the results imply that policies should focus on fostering network centers in Incheon and Gyeonggi regions, which are outside the metropolitan area, and consider to expand the transportation networks at the regional level.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze compact city planning indicators that have influence on public transportation commuting of residents in the 54 medium and small-sized cities. In the study, land use and transportation infrastructure of cities and other socio-demographic variables are used as explanatory variables in a causal model. 96,552 subjects from 54 cities in korea are selected as the final sample, and a statistical analysis is carried out by applying Random Intercept Logit Model. Analysis shows that a high level of density and jobs-housing balance in the city results in more public transportation commuting. And higher access to bus and subway station influence commuting, so subway & bus stop are important factors to increase public transportation commuting

  • The compact city usually provides good accessibility of residents with multiple transportation modes. However, in a compact city, annual average of travel distance per household by car is relatively short due to more congested traffic condition and larger travel cost than disperse city. As a result, total travel demand is decreasing when the region becomes more compact. Therefore compact development is regarded as one of the sustainable choices for future urban planning in many countries. This study aims at an empirical analysis of the relationship between urban compactness and travel demand based upon land-use and travel data for city of Seoul. In this study, 424 sub-districts with the mixed land-use patterns are assessed in a hexagonal diagram. The measurement is based on the relative deviation of each sector's characteristics including numbers of residence, manufacture, and trade & service. Multiple linear regression models are developed to analyze the effects of urban compactness on zonal trip generations. As a result, the trip generation rate in the residence-intensive and mixed-use areas is found to be relatively low. Furthermore, residents in high-compact areas tend to use public transport more often than residents in less compact areas.

  • The pyrolysis characteristics of celluloses and plastics, which are the principal materials contributing to the municipal solid wastes(MSWs), was investigated with a thermal gravimetric analysis reaction system. The experiments were carried out in a nitrogen atmosphere in the temperature range of 400~900K at various experimental conditions. Also, a modified pyrolysis model for compressed MSWs has been proposed. Varing the heating rate to 20, 30, 40K/min, reaction orders of MSWs' main component were around 1.1~1.9, activation energies were 117~166kJ/mol for celluloses and 187~239kJ/mol for plastics. Char yield was proportional to the heating rate, particle size, and compressed ratio. The model proposed in this study, which is applying Arrhenius equation and thermodynamics, is closer to the experimental results than the conventional model.

  • If MSW(Municipal Solid Waste) landfill is used as a foundation ground of construction site, the change of loading condition may cause a large amount of compression in MSW landfill. Therefore, the reinforcement for the loose compression nature of MSW landfill would be very important design factor to geotechnical engineers in considering the end-use of the landfill. In this study, a possible technique for stabilizing MSW landfill with use of codisposal of municipal solid waste and Fly Ash is discussed. In order to estimate the stabilization of compression characteristic of codisposed landfill, large compression test and lysimeter test were performed. According to the test results, as the proportion of Fly Ash increases, the compression might be reduced, but the permeability might be also reduced. Therefore, it is necessary to take into account the both characteristics changes in real application.

  • This study focused on developing strategies of cyber-compact city, combining compact city with information and communications technologies(ICTs), in order to enhance sustainable transportation. The cyber-compact city development is defined as a development that is able to reduce travel by ICTs and encourage people to use transit or non-motorized vehicles such as bicycles for ICT-induced travel (especially, discretionary travel) by compact and mixed land use. It can be achieved with combining cyber and compact strategies with respect to network, node, and area. For example, ICT network may use transit network facility, a transfer station may be a hub of ICTs, and transit influenced zone may work with ICT service area. We proposed three cohesive strategies for the cyber-compact city based on literature review and case studies on cyber and compact cities. The first strategy is a cohesion between public transportation and telecommunication network by centering on the two for national and urban spatial linkage structure. That is, cities or urban centers and its peripheral areas can be connected by rail network, and extra space of railway network can be used for constructing telecommunication network infrastructure. The second strategy is a cohesion between public transportation node and telecommunication node by building up regional and urban telecommunication centers near to or at main railway stations. For this strategy, telework centers and communication service centers should be established mainly at transfer stations. The third strategy is a cohesion between public transportation impact zone and telecommunication impact zone as transit oriented development.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze relationships between compact city development and residents' shopping trips in Seoul. Compact city planning factors are classified into land use and traffic environment. The main data source used for this research is 2006 Household Travel Survey data, then a statistic analysis was carried out by applying random intercept logit model. Analysis shows that a high level of residential density increases residents' local shopping. Also, a high level of residential density and land use mix results in more uses of public transportation, bicycle and walking for shopping. Also, more access to public transportation leads to more use of public transportation for shopping. Therefore, compact city development will have a positive impact on activating the use of public transportation, bicycle and walking for shopping.
