Applying Rosen-type PZT plasma generation device for medical applications (로젠형 압전변압기를 적용한 의료융합 플라즈마기기)

  • In the medical field, applications of plasma are applied sterilize instruments mainly but with the advent of bio-plasma technology, the scope of application is expanding. Recently, In addition, high-density miniaturization with handheld is required for sophisticated procedures when irradiated directly or treated with non-standard conditions. Rosen-type PZT is a device with a structure that generates high voltage plasma by achieving voltage transformation through electro-mechanical coupling using piezoelectric effect.and is used in portable plasma generating devices as an advantage to increase energy density relatively. In this paper, Rosen-type PZT was modeled using equivalent circuits and was carried out and a plasma generating device for medical application was designed and prototype tested. Prototype plasma generating device generates an output voltage of 5.8 kV with 12V input power and is designed to operate at high voltage by applying the half-bridge topology power converter. The results of the study confirmed the availability of various medical devices, such as plasma jets or direct exposure equipment.

Design of a Multimode Piezoelectric Spherical Vector Sensor for a Cardioid Beam Pattern (심장형 빔 패턴을 위한 다중모드 압전 구형 벡터센서 설계)

  • Typical underwater piezoelectric spherical sensors are omni-directional, thus can measure the scalar quantity sound-pressure-magnitude only with the limitation not being able to measure the direction of the incoming wave. This paper proposes a method to simultaneously measure both the magnitude and direction of the sound wave with the spherical sensor. The method divides the piezoceramic sphere of the sensor into eight elements, and distinguishes the magnitude and direction of the sound pressure by combining the output voltage of the elements in a particular manner. Further, through the analysis of the sensitivity variation in relation to the structural parameters like radius and thickness of the piezoceramic sphere, we have suggested the way to improve the sensitivity of the vector sensor.

  • We proposed and demonstrated a tunable wavelength optical add/drop multiplexer(OADM) employing piezoactuated fiber grating pairs and polarization beam splitters. We used piezostack act as a fiber stretcher, using the fact that the resonant wavelength of the grating can be controlled by the axial strain along the fiber grating. The polarization controlled configuration showed high stability because the reflected signals from the two identical gratings are dropped or added not by interference but by polarizations of the beams. We could add and drop not noly 1549.3nm signal channel(original gratings), but also 1550.1nm(tuned gratings) with PZT actuators and in both cases, we found that the rejection of adjacent channels was more than -26dB, and signal leakage at the gratings was less than -34dB.

Experimental performance evaluation and comparison for lightweight piezo-composite actuator LIPCA (압전 복합재료 작동기 LIPCA에 대한 성능 비교실험 및 분석)

  • This paper is concerned with the performance evaluation and comparison analysis fur several kinds of LIPCA (Lightweight Piezo-Composite Actuator) device system. LIPCA device system is composed of a piezoelectric ceramic layer and fiber reinforced light composite layers, typically a PZT ceramic layer was sandwiched by a top fiber layer with low CTE (coefficient of thermal expansion) and base layers with high CTE. To investigate the effect of lay-up structure of the LIPCA on the actuating performance, four kinds of actuator with different lay-up stacking sequence were designed, manufactured, and tested. The performance of each actuator was evaluated using an actuator test system consisted of an actuator supporting jig, a high voltage actuating power supplier, and a non-contact laser measuring system. From the comparison of the performance of the LIPCA prototypes, it was found that the actuator with higher coefficient of unimorph actuator can generate larger actuating displacement.

  • Piezoelectric paint can be used to monitor vibrations or impacts occurring in large engineering structures such as ships and airplanes. This study investigated the impact detection characteristics of a piezoelectric paint sensor and possible errors in detecting impacts according to boundary conditions. The piezoelectric paint sensor used in this study was coated on an aluminum plate with four different electrode areas. After the occurrence of the poling process, the output voltages from the paint sensors were obtained when impact occurred in a certain sensor region. The experimental results revealed a large difference in magnitudes between the sensor signal in the impact region and those in the other regions, and this relation was maintained regardless of the changes in the boundary conditions.

  • The piezoelectric single crystals used in piezoelectric transformers have a problem that power transfer capacity is comparatively low due to their high input impedance. In this study, we suggest a method to improve the power transfer capacity by reducing the high input impedance of the piezoelectric single crystal vibrator by connecting a capacitance increasing circuit to the electrical terminals of the piezoelectric single crystal vibrator where the circuit is a GIC (Generalized Impedance Converter) circuit using operational amplifiers. The result of measuring driving characteristics after applying the designed capacitance increasing circuit to the $128^{\circ}$ rotated Y-cut $LiNbO_3$ crystal vibrator confirmed that the input impedance decreased by 25 %, electromechanical coupling factor increased by 30 %, and the power transfer capacity increased by about 17 to 30 times in voltage conversion characteristics.

  • In PLZT system, a new type of material for piezoelectric actuator was developed and its properties were investigated. This material consists of three layers : a piezoelectric ceramic layer, an interlayer which composition changes gradually, and another piezoelectric layer. This kind of materials is called functionally Gradient Materials(FGM). The composition of these layers were selected from the $(Pb,\;La)(Zr,\;TiO_3$ system through the concept of materials design. Sintered FGM at $1300^{\circ}C$, 2hr has an interlayer of about $20\mu\textrm{m}$ with no distorted damage. Dielectric and piezoelectic properties of FGM show intervalues of each side composition. The strain-voltage characteristics in FGM system was improved comparison with any single composition. Especially, the FGMs were fabricated which has high piezoelectric-low dielectric composition and low piezoelectric-high dielectric composition. The properties of both FGMs were significantly improved.

Design of SECE Energy Harvest Interface Circuit with High Voltage Comparator for Smart Sensor (고전압 비교기를 적용한 스마트 센서용 SECE 에너지 하베스트 인터페이스 회로 설계)

  • In order to apply a piezoelectric energy harvester to a smart sensor system, an energy harvest interface circuit including an AC-DC rectifier is required. In this paper, we compared the performance of full bridge rectifier, which is a typical energy harvester interface circuit, and synchronous piezoelectric energy harvest interface circuit by using board-level simulation. As a result, the output power of a synchronous electric charge extraction(: SECE) circuit is about four times larger than that of the full bridge rectifier, and there is little load variation. And a high voltage comparator, which is essential for the SECE circuit for the piezoelectric energy harvester with an output voltage of 40V or more, was designed using 0.35 um BCD process. The SECE circuit using the designed high-voltage comparator proved that the output power is 427 % higher than the FBR circuit.

  • 박형초음파모터의 구조는 그림 1(a) 와 같이 크로스형태의 앓은 스테이터에 윗면과 아랫면에 각각 8 개의 압전세라믹이 부착된 형태이다. 압전세라믹의 분극방향은 로터와 접촉하는 스테이터의 A, B, C, D 네 개의 타점에서 순차적인 타원변위가 생성되도록 결정된다. 유한요소해석프로그램인 ATILA 5.2.4를 사용하여 최적설계를 한 결과 폭 3[mm], 길이 18[mm], 두께 1.8[mm], Brass 재질, Mid surface clamp 조건에서 입력전압 18[Vrms] 일 때 0.3[${\mu}m$]의 변위를 보였다. 최적설계된 모델을 제작하였고, 정확한 실험결과를 얻기 위해서 푸쉬풀게이지, x-y스테이지, rpm 메타, 토크게이지를 이용하여 실험테이블을 구성하였다. 그림 1(b) 는 마이크로컨트롤러를 이용한 구동 드라이버를 보여준다. 한 주기에서 1/4분주의 순차적인 네 개의 구형파를 생성하고, 이를 push-pull회로를 동하여 90도의 위상차가 나는 정현파를 생성하여 초음파 모터의 구동전원으로 사용한다. 엔코더와 AD 컨버터를 이용하여 정속도 운전을 위한 피드백 제어가 된다. 제안된 구동드라이버를 이용하여 측정한 결과, 구동 주파수 88.6[kHz], 입력전압 [40Vrms], preload 0.2 [N]에서 130 [rmp] 의 속도와 25 [gfcm] 의 토크특성을 보였다. 압력전압을 증가시킬수록 속도는 선형적인 증가를 보였고, 토크는 이와 반대로 감소하는 특성을 보였다. 피드백 제어회로가 없는 경우에는 preload 변화에 따른 극심한 속도 변화를 보였고, 피드백 제어를 하였을 경우에는 0.2~0.4[N]의 범위에서 정속도 운전이 가능함을 확인하였다. 기존의 주파수발생기와 파워 엠프를 이용한 구동장비와의 특성비교에서도 큰 차이를 보이지 않았으며, 장시간의 운전에도 안정적인 구동이 가능함을 확인하였다.

  • This paper proposes a new AC/DC RPPB(Resonant Piezo-Powered Boost) converter for energy harvesting using a piezoelectric device which converts mechanical vibration energy to electrical energy. The AC/DC RPPB converter can operate with only the harvested energy without an additional power conversion circuit for switching circuit and transfer energy to a load of which the voltage is higher than piezoelectric voltage. With the review of published topologies of the converter for energy harvesting, the operation principle of the AC/DC RPPB converter, and the results of PSPICE simulation and experiment are presented to prove the feasibility of the new converter for the energy harvesting.
