Effects of Probiotics Supplementation on Growth Performance , Blood Composition, and Fecal Noxious Gas of Broiler Chickens (사료내 생균제의 첨가가 육계의 성장, 혈액성상 및 분내 유해가스 함량에 미치는 영향)

  • This study was conducted to investigate the effects of feeding probiotics on the growth performance, blood composition, and fecal noxious gas in broiler chickens. Two hundred eighty eight broiler chickens were randomly allocated into three treatments with eight replications for live weeks. Dietary treatments included 1) Control (basal diet), 2) PB 0.5 (basal diet +0.5% probiotics), 3) PBI.0 (basal diet + 1.0% Probiotics for 0 to 1 wk of age, 0.5% probiotics for 1 to 3 wk of age, 0.25% probiotics for 3 to 5 wk of age) . There were no significantly difference among treatments for the body weight gain, but the feed intake of control group significantly (p<0.05) increased as compared with the PBI.0 group in overall experimental period. Digestibility of DM in PB0.5 group (80.84%) was significantly (p<0.05) improved as compared with those in PB 1.0 (79.34%) or control group (79.15%). Although N digestibility was slightly higher in broiler chicks fed probiotics than Control, there was no significance between probiotic groups. Total cholesterol, triglyceride, HDL- and LDL-cholesterol were not significantly different among the treatments. NH$_3$-N concentration in feces with PBI .0 treatment was lower (p<0.05) than Control or PB 0.5 treatments. These results indicated that locally obtained probiotics can be effectively used for reduction of ammonia nitrogen.

  • This study was carried out to investigate the effects of influent $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ load, C/N ratio and superficial air velocity on the nitrogen removal efficiencies. Laboratory scale upflow biological aerated filter(BAF) was consisted of an anoxic-aerobic filter packed with porous ceramic media and operated with synthetic wastewater. BAFs requires less energy and space for the system when compared to conventional activated sludge process. The influent C/N ratios were varied from 0 to 1 by adjusting acetate. Various superficial air velocity had been applied to investigate aeration effect on nitrogen removal. The BAF reactor showed more than 90% average $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ removal efficiencies at $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ loading in the range of $0.26{\sim}1.33$ kg $NH_4^{\;+}-N/m^3{\cdot}d$ and 62% average T-N removal efficiencies at the C/N ratio of 1. Moreover, average T-N removal efficiencies increased as the superficial air velocity increased, because of the increase $NH_4^{\;+}-N$ removal efficiencies.

  • This study was conducted to see the effect of maintaining the freshness of mackerel caught offshore, through the chemical analysis method in seawater slurry ice(SS), sea water cube ice(SC), tap water slurry ice(TS) and tap water cube ice(TC). Among each ice mass, bacteria were below the drinking water standard and ammonia nitrogen was over the threshold of 11 mg/l in sea water. The turbidity of the seawater was severe compared to that of fresh water. Proximate compositions showed 72.7% moisture content, 20.5% protein, 5.25% lipid, and 1.3% ash content. Sea slurry ice was kept low in pH compared with fresh water ice. VBN increases were inhibited in all reservoirs at the beginning of the storage. Generally Sea ice was kept lower VBN value than the fresh water ice.

  • Tolerances of aquatic plants (emergent plants) of cattail (Typha orientalis), water oats (Zizania latifolia), reed (Phragmites communis), and bulrush (Scirpus nipponicus) to salts and high NH₄/sup +/-N cone. of industrial wastewater were evaluated. Evapotranspiration of cattail and water oats plants was not affected when the wastewater containing 130 ppm NH₄/sup +/-N with electrical conductivity of 3.0 dS/m was supplied for 5 months. Shoot and root dry wt. of cattail and water oats were rather increased by irrigation of the wastewater while the biomass production of bulrush was greatly reduced. Storage nitrogen concentration in tissues of water oats and reed plants were higher than those in cattail and bulrush. Thus, water oats and reed plants were found to be the better aquatic plants to use in constructed wetlands for treating industrial wastewater of high salt and NH₄/sup +/-N.

Electrochemical Properties of Carbon Felt Electrode for Vanadium Redox Flow Batteries by Liquid Ammonia Treatment (암모니아수 처리에 따른 바나듐 레독스 흐름전지용 탄소펠트 전극의 전기화학적 특성)

  • In this study, nitrogen doped carbon felt (CFt) is prepared using thermal oxidation and liquid phase ammonia treatment to improve the efficiency for vanadium redox flow batteries (VRFB). The electrochemical properties of prepared CFt electrodes are investigated using cyclic voltammetry (CV) and charge/discharge test. The XPS result shows that the increase of liquid phase ammonia treatment temperature leads to the increased nitrogen functional group on the CFt surface. Redox reaction characteristics using CV reveal that the liquid phase ammonia treated CFt electrodes are more reversible than the thermally oxidized CFt. When CFt is treated by the liquid phase ammonia at $300^{\circ}C$, VRFB cell energy efficiency, voltage efficiency, and current efficiency are increased about 6.93%, 1.0%, and 4.5%, respectively, compared to those of the thermally oxidized CFt. These results are because nitrogen functional groups on CFt help to improve the electrochemical properties of redox reaction between electrode and electrolyte interface.

Water Treatment of Seawater Recirculating Aquaculture System by Using Three Phase Fluidized Bed Reactor (삼상 유동층 반응조를 이용한 해수 순환 여과 시설의 수처리)

  • Capacity of water treatment of the three phase fluidized bed reactor as a biofilter in the seawater recirculating system was evaluated. The water treatment system consists of fluidized bed reactor for ammonia removal, cartridge filter for solid removal and ozone contactor for disinfection. Mean concentration of water quality parameters: COD, TAN, $NO_2$-N, $NO_3$-N, SS and alkalinity were 9.0, 0.22, 0.05, 20.0, 9.5 and 70.0 mg/l, respectively; the relevant values were 7.6 for pH and 3.64 NTU for turbidity. These indicate the maintenance of good water quality by the treatment system. The influent TAN loading rate in to the fluidized bed reactor ranged from 4.3 to 32.9 g/$m^3$/day, and averaged to 20 g/$m^3$/day. TAN removal efficiency of each phase of the fluidized bed reactor was 47-60%, indicating the effective ammonia removal. During operation the effluent of fluidized bed reactors also maintained the unionized ammonia nitrogen level below 0.002 mg/l.

Thermophilic Anaerobic Digestion of Animal Carcasses (동물 사체의 고온 혐기성 소화)

  • Animal carcasses have always been and continue to be a major burden in animal production. The main aim of this study is to evaluate the feasibility of thermophilic anaerobic digestion for animal carcasses. A batch test using ground meat and organ as the model substrate showed that animal carcasses arehighly biodegradable at thermophilic anaerobic condition. The volatile solids (VS) destruction and $CH_4$ yieldranged from 52.7 to 58.5% and from 220 to 243 mL/g VS, respectively, at initial substrate VS in the range of 1.5~7.7%. However, high ammonia concentration inhibited continuous operation at substrate VS above 2.5%. As ammonia is formed during the degradation of proteineous organic materials, the major constituent of animal carcasses, the only way to reduce the ammonia concentration would be dilution. Co-digestion with other waste stream without high nitrogen content is recommended as an economically feasible approach for thermophilic digestion of animal carcass.

Removing High Concentration Nitrogen by Electrolysis (전기분해에 의한 고농도 질소 제거의 특성)

  • Laboratory experiments were conducted to investigate characteristics for removing ammonia-nitrogens by electrolysis methods. A stainless steel plate is used as the cathode and either $IrO_2{\backslash}Ti$ plate serves as the anode. Experiments were conducted to examine the effects of the operating conditions, such as the current density, retention time, electrode gap, $Cl^-/NH_4{^+}-N$ on the $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal efficiency. Possible optimum range for these operating variables are experimentally determined. The $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal efficiencies between plate type anode and net type anode were about same effect, but electrolytic power using net type anode is low than plate type anode. The $Cl^-/NH_4{^+}-N$ ratio was about $20.0kgCl^-/kgNH_4{^+}-N$ when $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal obtained 73 %, $Cl^-/NH_4{^+}-N$ ratio needs $27.6kgCl^-/kgNH_4{^+}-N$ so as to $NH_4{^+}-N$ completely remove. The removal efficiency of $NH_4{^+}-N$ increase with current density, retention time and $Cl^-/NH_4{^+}-N$ ratio, but decreased with increasing electrode gap. The relationship of operating conditions and $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal efficiencies are $$NH_4{^+}-N_{re}(%)=14.5364(Current\;density)^{0.7093}{\times}(HRT)^{1.0060}{\times}(Gap)^{-0.9926}{\times}(Cl^-/NH_4{^+}-N)^{1.0024}$$ With adding COD or/and alkalinity, relationships are $$NH_4{^+}-N_{re}(%)=9.8408(Current\;density)^{0.6232}{\times}(HRT)^{1.0534}$$ There existed a competition between the removals for $NH_4{^+}-N$ and $COD_{Cr}$ during electrolysis, the removal of $NH_4{^+}-N$ was shown to be dominant. $NH_4{^+}-N$ removal was high as addition of glucose and alkalinity.

Estimation of Ammonia Emission During Composting Iivestock Manure Based on the Degree of Compost Maturity (축분 퇴비화 과정 중 퇴비 부숙도를 고려한 암모니아 발생량 산정)

  • Principal aim of this study is to suggest the statistical equation model which can predict an amount of ammonia emission according to the degree of compost maturity during composting livestock manure. Composting process was classified with intial, midterm and final phase based on germination index of compost samples. Total Kjeldahl nitrogen(TKN) and organic matter(OM) were selected as the independent variables available to contribute to ammonia emission from composting pile. Ammonia concentration measured in the samples taken at the intial phase was about 10ppm, sharply increased to 50ppm at the midterm phase, and gradually decreased to about 10ppm. The contents of Total Kjeldahl nitrogen and organic matter through whole composting period were ranged from 0.6 to 1.2% and from 30 to 40%, respectively, were reduced slightly at the midterm phase, but generally showed no constant fluctuation pattern. In estimating ammonia emission with application of the statistical equation model, the coefficients of independent variables at the midterm phase when an average concentration of ammonia was highest showed a relatively high values whereas those at the initial phase when an that of ammonia was lowest indicated a relatively low values. However, no statistical significance was found in the coefficients of independent variables and the equation model. Additionally, the further research, which can include the considerable analysis data with more samples taken than this study, is needed in order to suggest the statistically significant equation model available to predict ammonia emission during composting process.

  • Vertical and horizontal distributions of chemical oceanograthic parameters were measured in Jinhae Bay in July, 1983. On the Masan-Gadeog section, high amounts of dissolved nitrates, ammonia, chlorophylla-a, and particulate carbon and nitrogen were observed in waters with low salinity. In the inner Masan Bay, high concentrations of dissolved ammonia and phosphates were shown. The C/N ratio in the surface waters was higer in the outer bay. Concentrations of dissolved inorganic nitrogen and phosphates in the surface waters seemed to be sufficient for red tides to occur.
