  • The thermoelectric characteristics of alkali activated slag composites containing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNT) was investigated in the present study. Three different MWCNT contents and exposed temperatures were considered, and their thermoelectric-related properties and internal structures were analyzed. It was found that the alkali activated slag composite with MWCNT 2.0 wt.% and the exposed temperature of 150℃ were the optimal condition to obtain the highest Seebeck coefficient and power factor. Based on the feasibility study, the extended size thermoelectric module with 130 elements was fabricated, and tested the electricity production capacity. Consequently, the present thermoelectric module produced 30.83 ㎼ of electricity at ∆T=178.4℃.

  • In this paper, we tried to find the proper ratio of industrial byproducts which can express mechanical characteristics similar to ordinary portland cement by varying the ratio of industrial byproducts. as a result, the activated slag binder produced by the industrial byproduct in this study increased in compressive strength as the ratio of blast furnace slag increased and the fly ash ratio decreased.

  • Flow and compressive strength of slag mortars activated by $MgNO_3$ were measured to examine the significance and limitation for the use of Mg-ion as an alkali-activator. The compressive strength of mortars tested was significantly dependent on the addition amount of $MgNO_3$, showing that 30~60% higher strength was developed in water-cured mortars than in air-cured mortars.

  • Six alkali-activated (AA) concrete mixes were tested to explore the significance and limitations of developing an environmental friendly concrete. Ground granulated blast-furnace slag and powder typed sodium silicate were selected as source material and an alkaline activator, respectively. The main parameter investigated was the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate to the natural sand. Workability and mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete were measured: the variation of slump with time, the rate of compressive strength development, the splitting tensile strength, the moduli of rupture and elasticity, the stress-strain relationship, the bond resistance and shrinkage strain. Test results showed that the compressive strength of lightweight AA concrete sharply decreased when the replacement level of lightweight fine aggregate exceeded 30%. In particular, the increase in the discontinuous grading of lightweight aggregate resulted in the deterioration of the mechanical properties of concrete tested. The measured properties of lightweight AA concrete were also compared, wherever possible, with the results obtained from the design equations specified in ACI 318-05 or EC 2, depending on the relevance, and the results predicted from the empirical equations proposed by Slate et al. for lightweight ordinary Portland cement concrete. The stress-strain curves of different concrete were compared with predictions obtained from the mathematical model proposed by Tasnimi. The measured mechanical properties of lightweight AA concrete generally showed little agreement with the predictions obtained from these equations.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the expansion of alkali-activated mortar based on ground granulated blast furnace slag containing reactive aggregate due to alkali-silica reaction. In addition, this study was particularly concerned with the behavior of these alkaline materials in the presence of reactive aggregates. The experimental program included expansion measurement of the mortar bar specimens, as well as the determination of the morphology and composition of the alkali-silica reaction products by using scanning electron microscopy(SEM), and energy dispersive x-ray(EDX). The experiment showed that while alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag mortars showed expansion due to the alkali-silica reaction, the expansion was 0.1% at Curing Day 14, showing that it is safe. After the accelerated test, SEM and BEM analysis showed the presence of alkali-silica gel and rim around the aggregate and cement paste. According to the EDX, the reaction products decreased markedly as alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag was used. In addition, for the substitutive materials of mineral admixture, a further study on improving the quality of alkali-activated ground granulated blast furnace slag is needed to assure of the durability properties of concrete.

  • In this study, the variations in CO2 uptake according to the type and amount of alkali-based activator (Ca(OH)2, CSA) of geopolymer paste were evaluated. As the amount of activator added to the geopolymer paste increased, the fluidity of the paste is decreased and the compressive strength increased. According to the type of activator, it was confirmed that the addition of Ca(OH)2 had a greater effect on improving the compressive strength than CSA. As a result of changes in chemical properties according to carbonation curing, the amount of C-S-H and C-A-S-H gels produced before carbonation increased as the amount of activator increased, and amount of CaCO3 produced after carbonation increased. The reactivity of the blast furnace slag and zeolite increased due to the addition of the activator, and the reactivity tended to increase as the amount of addition increased. As a result of CO2 uptake, 10.3 wt% when Ca(OH)2 10 % was added and 8.77 wt% when CSA 10 % was added was confirmed. It increased by 421 % and 388 % respectively, compared to the case where no activator was added.

  • Ultra-high performance concrete and high ductile cementless composite are considered as promising construction materials because those exhibits higher performance in terms of high strength and high ductility. The purpose of this study is to investigate experimentally the compressive strength and tensile behavior of ultra-high performance concrete and high ductile cementless composite. A series of experiments including density, compressive strength, and uniaxial tension tests were performed. Test results showed that the compressive strength and tensile strength of alkali-activated slag based high ductile cementless composite were lower than those of ultra-high performance concrete. However, the tensile strain capacity and toughness of alkali-activated slag based high ductile cementless composite were higher than those of ultra-high performance concrete. And it was exhibited that a high ductility up to 7.89% can be attainable by incorporating polyethylene fiber into the alkali-activated slag based cementless paste.

  • The present study investigated hydration of alkali activated slag incorporating sulfate as a form of anhydrite by employing thermodynamic modeling using the Gibbs free energy minimization approach. Various parameters were evaluated in the thermodynamic calculations, such as presence of sulfide, precipitation/dissolution of AFt/AFm phase, and the effect of oxic condition on the predicted reaction. The calculations suggested no significant difference in the void volume and chemical shrinkage, which might influence the performance of the mixtures, in spite of various changes of the parameters. Although the types of hydration products and their amount varied according to the input conditions, their variations were smaller range than that induced by water-to-binder ratio. Moreover, it did not affect the amount of C-(N-)A-S-H which was the most important hydration product.

  • Recently, studies on alkali activated slag(AAS) binders that do not use cement have been actively conducted. It is known that AAS concrete is highly resistant to chloride damage based on the test method used for ordinary concrete. However, it is fully not understood whether the test method used for concrete can be applied to AAS mixtures. Therefore, in this study, we verified the consistency of NT Build 492 and ASTM C 1202 test methods by applying various experimental variables. According to the experimental results, the two tests yielded opposite results. Therefore, the chloride durability of AAS mortar can be different depending on the evaluation method.

  • The unrestrained shrinkage strain of alkali-activated (AA) slag concrete was examined and compared with design equations specified in code provisions and empirical equations proposed by Yang et al. The main parameters investigated were the water-to-binder ratio (W/B), unit water content and fine aggregate-to-total aggregate ratio (S/a). Test results revealed that shrinkage strain of AA slag concrete is nearly proportional to the W/B ratio, whereas its time function is independent of the W/B ratio. The shrinkage strain of AA slag concrete increased significantly when the unit water content is above $185kg/m^3$, whereas it is marginally affected by the S/a ratio. The design equation of ACI 209 considerably overestimates the shrinkage behavior of AA slag concrete, whereas CEB-FIP equation tends to underestimate the shrinkage at the age more than 28 days. The empirical equation of Yang et al. is in better agreement with test results, showing that values of mean and standard deviation of error coefficients obtained from each specimen are 016 and 0.07, respectively.
