The Effect of Smooth Pursuit Eye Movement Using Portable Device to Chronic Hemispatial Neglect: A Pilot Study (휴대용 디바이스를 이용한 완곡추적 안구운동이 만성 편측무시에 미치는 영향: 예비연구)

  • Objective : This study aim is to identify whether smooth pursuit eye movement(SPEM) using portable device can alleviate chronic hemispatial neglect. Methods : We applied smooth pursuit eye movement to one chronic hemispatial neglect patient. Experimental duration was total 4weeks - 1week baseline, 2weeks SPEM intervention, 1week 2nd. baseline. The intervention was 10 SPEM sessions (30min each, 1session daily, from Monday to Friday) over a period of 2weeks. The neglect test carried out 5 times a week. The SPEM was provided on the screen when patient sat in front of the screen(8.4 inch tablet pc, distance 40cm). The SPEM video that the 24 yellow squares moving coherently from the right to the left side. Patients were instructed to perform smooth pursuit eye movement without head and neck movement. Results : As a result of the SPEM for 2weeks, the degree of neglect tended to decrease compared to baseline A. The degree of the LBT tended to increase the at the baseline A'. In contrast, the SCT showed that tendency which the degree of the neglect maintained at the baseline A'. Conclusion : We identified that SPEM using portable device is effective intervention method for chronic hemispatial neglect.

  • 1990년대 후반까지 줄곧 광고 시장 점유율 1위를 차지하던 신문광고가 2001년을 기점으로 광고 시장 점유율의 지속적인 하락세를 보이고 있다. 이는 인터넷과 같은 경쟁적인 뉴미디어가 급격히 성장하는 데 그 원인이 있을 뿐만 아니라, 신문의 광고효과를 산출하는 과학적 방법론이 부족하다는 데에도 그 원인이 있다. 이러한 문제의식에서 출발하여, 본 연구에서는 안구운동 추적(eyetracking)을 활용하여 신문광고의 노출효과를 측정했다. 이를 위하여, 기존 신문 구독자의 인구통계학적 분포에 따라 추출된 50명의 표본을 대상으로, 신문의 면내 광고별 체류시간을 헤드 마운트형 안구운동 추적기(head-mounted eyetracker)를 활용하여 측정했다. 실험 결과, 데이터의 95%가 기존의 주의-기억 단계를 따르는 순차적인 정보처리모델과 스타치 구독률 조사(starch readership reports) 결과와 안구운동 추적 결과와 일치했다. 하지만, 5%의 데이터가 주의와 기억 단계의 차이에 기인한 이월 효과(carry-out)로 순차적인 정보처리모델과 일치하지 않는 것으로 나타났다. 즉 5%가량이 광고를 보지 않았음에도 봤다고 표시했다. 또한, 기존에 스타치 구독률 조사와 같은 재인 측정 방법을 통하여 간접적으로 측정하였던 기존의 신문 광고 노출율(보통 30%)에 비하여, 직접 측정한 결과 60%에 달하는 광고 노출율을 보였다. 이는 기존의 인식과 달리, 스타치 구독률 조사가 단순 노출 정도가 아니라, 응답자의 선택적인 기억 결과를 측정한 것임을 보여준다. 이로써, 안구운동 추적을 활용한 노출효과측정은 기존에 스타치 구독률 조사에서 놓치고 있는 부분을 보완할 수 있는 기법임을 보여준다. 또한 이 기법에 의하여 도출된 노출율은 60%에 달하여 기존의 약30%로 제시된 연구결과들이 실제로 측정기법의 한계로 인하여, 기억이 가지고 있는 왜곡을 그대로 반영한 노출율에 관한 자료를 쓰는 것으로 나타났다. 본 연구에서 제안된 노출효과 측정방법론은 기존의 왜곡된 데이터를 보완하고, 신문 광고 시장의 과학적인 측정기법을 발전시키는 데 의미 있는 기여를 할 것으로 기대한다.

Effects of Neuroticism on Situation Awareness, Eye Movement, and Driving Performance (운전자의 신경증 수준에 따른 상황인식, 안구운동 및 운전수행에서의 차이)

  • In this study, the effects of driver's neuroticism on situation awareness(SA), eye movement(EM), and driving performance were examined. In Experiment 1, in which static driving scenes were presented, it was found that the drivers of higher neuroticism showed shorter percentage of dwell time and less percentage of fixation counts for the peripheral area than those of lower neuroticism, although SA scores yielded no difference between the two neuroticism groups. In Experiment 2, differences in the drivers' driving performances as well as SA and EM as a function of neuroticism were compared using driving simulation. The results of Experiment 2 showed the followings. First, contrasting to Experiment 1, the high neuroticism group showed lower SA score than low neuroticism group. Second, the pattern of EM was similar to those of Experiment 1. Third, high neuroticism group deviated more from center of road, and drove slower than low neuroticism group.

The Effects of Eye Health and Dynamic Visual Activity on Eye Movement in University Students (안구운동이 대학생의 눈 건강과 동체시력에 미치는 영향)

  • Younger generations use a variety of visual media, such as smartphones, televisions, and computers. Due to the development of visual media, the health of eye was weakening. Therefore, this study aimed to investigate the effects of eye health and dynamic visual activity on eye muscle stimulation with eye movement and therapeutic massage in university students. 38 university students in their 20s were divided into a control group(18) and an experimental group(20). The experimental group performed eye movement and therapeutic massage every 30 minutes for 5 times a week for 4 weeks. Ocular fatigue, maximal blinking interval, ocular surface temperature, and dynamic visual activity were measured before and after 4 weeks. Ocular fatigue was decreased significantly after 4 weeks (p<.05), and maximal blinking interval was increased significantly after 4 weeks (p<.05). Ocular surface temperature was not showed a significant difference after 4 weeks (p>.05), and dynamic visual activity was increased significantly after 4 weeks (p<.05). Therefore, eye movement and therapeutic massage are recommended for the improvement of eye function and eye health. It is expected to be used as research data to restore and prevent for eye health.

Convergent Analysis of Old People Eye Movement Training on Change of Cognitive Ability (안구 운동이 노인의 인지능력 변화에 미치는 융합적 분석)

  • The objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of eye movement on cognitive ability using Mini-Mental State Examination for Dementia Screening (MMSE-DS) and the amplitude and latency of P300 from event-related potentials after 55 elderly participants were randomly stratified into the saccadic eye movement (SEM) group and the smooth pursuit eye movement (SPEM) group, and performed eye movement for 4 weeks. As a result, P300 amplitude significantly increased and P300 latency significantly shortened in the SEM and SPEM groups. MMSE-DS showed a significant increase in both groups; upon comparing the groups, the SEM group showed a significant difference in orientation and the SPEM group in attention. In conclusion, it is thought that SEM and SPEM can improve and maintain the cognitive ability of the elderly and may be used as therapeutic tools for dementia prevention and mild dementia.

Methods: We applied optokinetic stimulation with smooth pursuit eye movement to 2 chronic hemispatial neglect patients. experimental duration was total 4weeks - 1week baseline, 2weeks OKS intervention, 1week 2nd. baseline. The intervention was 10 OKS sessions (30min each, 1session daily, from Monday to Friday) over a period of 2weeks. The neglect test carried out 3 times a week every other day. The OKS was provided on the screen when patient sat in front of the screen(13.5 inch). The OKS video that the 24 yellow squares moving coherently from the right to the left side. Patients were instructed to perform smooth pursuit eye movement without head and neck movement. Results: As a result of the OKS for 2weeks, the degree of neglect trends to decrease on both 2 cases compared to baseline A. The degree of the neglect of subject 1 tended to increase the at the baseline A. In contrast, the subject 2 showed that tendency that the degree of the neglect declined additionally at the baseline A. Conclusions: We identified that 30 minutes optokinetic stimulation with sooth pursuit eye movement is effective intervention method for chronic hemispatial neglect.

The effect of art expertise and awareness of artists' intention on the patterns of eye movement during perception of abstract paintings with implied motion (미술에 대한 전문성과 화가의 표현 의도에 관한 자각이 운동성을 묘사한 추상화 지각 시 안구 운동 패턴에 미치는 영향)

  • Artists such as Duchamp and Balla tried to portray moving objects on static canvases by superimposing snapshots of moving objects. Previously, our group showed the influence of prior experience on brain responses within a motion-sensitive area MT+ to abstr act paintings with or without implied motion. In the present study, we went further to investigate whether the differential MT+activation between observers is originated from differential eye movement patterns. Prior experience was defined operationally with major in art. In addition, we examined whether perceiver's awareness of artist's intention concerning the implied motion, as well as expertise in art, affects the way he/she views the artwork. Results showed that the number and the duration of fixation on the abstract paintings tended to differ between participants based on art major. The awareness of artist's intention was not related to such differences. In contrast, observers' awareness of artist's intention of implying motion affected eye movement patterns in specific regions of the abstract paintings where the motion was portrayed. In other words, observers with awareness focused more on the parts of paintings portraying motion and moved their eyes in the direction corresponding to the direction of moving objects than observers without awareness. Expertise was not related to such specific eye movement patterns. The present study implies that art expertise and awareness of artist's intention play differential roles in observers' perception of paintings with implied motion. Namely, it suggests that expertise is related to the overall perception of paintings, while awareness of implied motion is related to perception of the specific spatial information in those paintings.

Development of the Heuristic Attention Model Based on Analysis of Eye Movement of Elementary School Students on Discrimination task (변별과제에서 초등학생의 안구운동 분석을 통한 발견적 주의 모델 개발)

  • The purpose of this study was to develop a HAM (Heuristic Attention Model) by analyzing the difference between eye movements according to the science achievement of elementary school students on discrimination task. Science achievement was graded by the results of the Korea national achievement test conducted in 2012 for a random sampling of classes. As an assessment tool to check discrimination task, two discrimination measure problems from TSPS (Test of Science Process Skill, developed in 1994) which were suitable for an eye tracking system were adopted. The subjects of this study were 20 students from the sixth grade who agreed to participate in the research. SMI was used to collect EMD (eye movement data). Experiment 3.2 and BeGaze 3.2 programs were used to plan experiments and analyze EMD. As a result, eye movements of participants in discrimination tasks varied greatly in counts and duration of fixation, first fixation duration, and dwell time, according to students' science achievement and difficulty of the problems. By the analysis of EMD, strategies of the students' problem-solving could be found. During problem solving, subjects' eye movements were affected by visual attention; bottom-up attention, top-down attention and convert attention, and aflunter attention. In conclusion, HAM was developed, and it is believed to help in the development of a science learning program for underachievers.

Effects of eye movement on cognitive function of the normal adults (정상성인에게 적용한 안구운동이 인지기능에 미치는 영향)

  • 본 연구의 목적은 정상성인 대상자에게 안구운동 후 인지능력에 어떠한 영향을 미치는지 알아보고자 하였다. 20명의 정상성인을 대상으로 단속성 안구운동군을 설정하였다. 모든 대상자는 사전 사후에 인지기능을 측정하였다. 연구 결과 군내 유의한 변화가 나타났다. 단속성 안구운동이 인지능력을 향상 시키는데 영향을 줄 수 있다고 판단된다.

Relationship between SNP A and P1763 Polymorphisms on Dystrobrevin Binding Protein 1(DTNBP1) Gene and Smooth Pursuit Eye Movement(SPEM) Abnormality in Korean Schizophrenic Patients (한국인 정신분열병 환자의 안구추적운동 이상과 Dystrobrevin Binding Protein 1(DTNBP1) 유전자의 SNP A와 P1763 다형성의 연합에 대한 연구)

  • Objectives : We investigated the association of SNP A and P1763 polymorphisms on dystrobrevin binding protein 1(DTNBP1) gene with smooth pursuit eye movement(SPEM) abnormality in Korean schizophrenic patients. Methods : We measured SPEM function in 217 Korean schizophrenics(male 116, female 101) and divided them into two groups, one is a good SPEM function group and the other is a poor SPEM function group. We then analyzed SNP A polymorphism and P1763 polymorphism on DTNBP1 gene from their DNAs extracted from their blood. We compared the differences of genotype and allele distributions of the two polymorphisms on DTNBP1 gene between the two groups. Results : The Ln S/N ratio(mean${\pm}$SD) of the good SPEM function group was $4.39{\pm}0.33$ and the ratio of poor SPEM function group was $3.17{\pm}0.71$. There were no statistically significant differences of age and male/female ratio between the two groups. There were no significant differences of genotype or allele distributions of the SNP A polymorphism and P1763 polymorphism on DTNBP1 gene between the two schizophrenic groups divided by SPEM function. Conclusion : The results suggest that SNP A polymorphism and P1763 polymorphism on DTNBP1 gene might not be related to SPEM function abnormality in schizophrenia.
