  • In this study, water-based acrylic tackifier with different contents of 1-dodecanethiol(n-DM), a chain transfer agent(CTA), were synthesized to improve the performance and adhesive properties of water-based acrylic pressure sensitive adhesive(PSA). In order to investigate the change in physical properties according to the amount of water-based acrylic tackifier added, 10/20/30 phr of water-based acrylic tackifier was added to the water-borne acrylic emulsion to measure the physical properties. The molecular weight and glass transition temperature(Tg) of the synthesized water-based acrylic tackifier tended to decrease as the content of n-DM increased. When a water-based acrylic tackifier was added to the water-borne acrylic emulsion, the peel strength and heat-resistance were increased. Also, when the water-based acrylic tackifiers were added at 10 phr or 20 phr, the best value was shown.

  • Effects of frying temperature and time, presoaking in distilled water, various pH buffer solutions, and storage temperature of french fries on acrylamide formation were investigated. Acrylamide concentration in french fries increased as frying temperature and time increased. Presoaking of raw potatoes in distilled water reduced acrylamide formation compared to those without presoaking. Acrylamide formation of fried potatoes after presoaking at $60^{\circ}C$ for 45 min was about 16% of that without presoaking. Presoaking treatment of raw potatoes in various buffer solutions showed acrylamide concentrations of french fries from potatoes presoaked in acidic buffer solutions were lower than those from potatoes presoaked in neutral to alkaline buffer solutions. Acrylamide concentration of potatoes stored at refrigerator temperature was much higher than those stored at room temperature.

  • The thin coating material used in the outer insulation finishing method is a finishing material mainly based on acrylic emulsion. In this study, the properties of silane modified acrylic emulsion and silica dispersed acrylic emulsion were evaluated. Experimental results showed that the silane modified acrylic emulsion had no significant effect on improving tensile strength, but was effective in improving the performance of adhesion strength, water absorption coefficient, and hot and cold repeat resistance. Silica-dispersed acrylic emulsions were effective in improving tensile strength, and at 10% substitution rate, they were effective in improving the performance of adhesion strength, water absorption coefficient and hot / cold resistance. Through this, it was judged that a composite emulsion capable of improving the performance of the acrylic emulsion could be prepared.

  • Acrylamide in various food samples in Korea were monitored during the period beginning August 2006 through May 2007. A total of 471 food products that were purchased at local markets were categorized into 17 groups and analyzed for the acrylamide content by using an LC-MS/MS method. Food samples that were selected based on special consideration such as expert consultation, Korean food consumption data and food market shares were considered to be representative. There are very large variations in acrylamide levels within tested foods. Acrylamide content ranged from ND(not detected) to $4,002{\mu}g$/kg with all tested samples. Acrylamide levels are relatively high in 'cereal', 'coffee', 'potato snacks', 'biscuit', 'chocolate', and 'prune juice'. Acrylamide was also detected in fruits, vegetables, Korean traditional cookies which are considered as safe for acrylamide.

  • Thermosensitive poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gels containing temperature-sensitive liposomes showing temperature-dependent sol-gel transition were prepared. The surface of temperature-sensitive liposome was modified with copolymers of N-isopropylacrylamide and octadecylacrylate, which exhibited a lower critical solution temperature at around 30 $^{\circ}C$ After mixing the modified temperature-sensitive liposomes with poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) solution, the temperature-sensitive 1iposomes formed physically cross-linked gels through heating the solution above their lower critical solution temperatures. The release of drug from temperature-sensitive liposomes was determined by measuring fluorescence intensity. The drug release from temperature-sensitive liposomes in poly(N-isopropylacrylamide) gel gradually showed sustained-release with increasing temperature.

  • New pressure sensitive adhesives (PSAs) for polarizer film were prepared by electron beam (e-beam) radiation to acrylic copolymers, and their adhesive properties were investigated. The acrylic copolymers were synthesized by free radical polymerization of $n$-butylacrylate (BA), 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA), and acrylic acid (AA). The acrylic copolymers were coated on PET release films to a thickness of 25 ${\mu}m$, laminated to polarizer films, and then radiated with e-beam at room temperature. Gel fractions of all the acrylic copolymers after e-beam radiation at 50 kGy were higher than 93%, and their crosslinking densities were increased with increasing the content of HEMA units. PSA prepared by e-beam radiation of acrylic copolymer synthesized with a feed ratio of BA/HEMA/AA = 89.5/10/0.5 (w/w/w) at a dose of 50 kGy exhibited the best adhesion performances in terms of peel strength, creep resistance, durability and reliability, and light leakage. It is expected that the preparation method of PSAs via e-beam irradiation will improve the producibility and workability of polarizer film for liquid crystal display.

  • Silyl group-containing acrylic resins were synthesized to prepare weather resistant coatings. Acrylic copolymer was synthesized by the addition copolymerization of n-butyl methacrylate, methyl methacrylate, n-butyl acrylate and 3-methacryloxypropyl trimethoxysilane (MPTS). Acrylic copolymer were synthesized such that their $T_g$'s were adjusted to $20^{\circ}C$ and their MPTS contents were varied to 10, 20 and 30 wt%. As the content of MPTS increased, viscosity of coatings increased and thermal stability at the high temperature was improved. Coatings was prepared by blending the synthesized resins with a white pigment. The adhesion performance of coatings was superior with various substrates and their other properties were on the whole suitable. Weatherability was tested by outdoor exposure test, WOM test and QUV test. It was proved that resin with 30 wt% MPTS was suitable as the binder for weather resistant coatings.

  • Fluorine-18 used in PET/CT scans is a radioactive isotope that emits positrons, and high energy annihilation gamma rays and beta rays cause exposure to radiation workers. In this study, as part of a plan to reduce the exposure dose of radiation workers working in the Department of Nuclear Medicine, the cause of the low shielding efficiency of Apron for F-18 was identified, and the effectiveness of the Apron double-shielded with acrylic was evaluated. L-Block, Apron+acrylic, Apron, Acrylic+Apron, and Acrylic five shields are used to measure the dose, and the tendencies were compared by performing a Monte Carlo simulation. As a result, it was found that the shielding rate of Apron double shielded with acrylic was about 4 to 8% higher than that of Apron single shielded. To the extent that it does not significantly affect the user's activity, double-shielded personal protective clothing with an appropriate acrylic thickness could help reduce radiation workers' exposure.

  • The aim of this paper was to improve the shortcomings of Pitcher Concrete, a conventional ethylene-based polymer used in combination with the other components, and present basic data for use as improved road pavement material by applying an acrylic polymer. Existing ethylene polymer-based pitcher concrete materials were selected. Acrylic polymer was then added and the resulting mixture was evaluated. The compressive strength of the existing ethylene-based polymer pitcher concrete combination was low due to the large air gap, and a compressive strength of 24MPa was observed on the 28th day of road use, as defined by KS for an acrylic polymer-based pitcher concrete combination. Regarding the bending strength, the combined strength of the acrylic polymer-based pitcher concrete was excellent, and the factor of the pitcher was measured above the reference, 0.1(mm/s), in all variables. All parameters measured were less than 1%. The acrylic polymer mixing characteristics were able to maintain the dynamic modulus of elasticity for more than 120 cycles, but not more than 80 cycles for the other combinations. Therefore, the addition of more acrylic polymer than conventional ethylene polymer base is effective in improving the durability.
