Effects of Ammonia Loading on Nitrification and Nitrite Build-up in an Activated Carbon Fluidized Bed Biofilm Reactor (암모니아 부하가 활성탄 유동상에서의 질산화 및 아질산 축적에 미치는 영향)

  • The effects of ammonia loading on nitrification, especially on nitrite build-up, in an activated carbon fluidized bed reactor were investigated by increasing the ammonia loading rate stepwise from 0.1 to $7.5kg\;NH_3-N/m^3{\cdot}day$. Although effluent nitrite concentration and nitrification efficiency fluctuated at the loading rates above $1.8kg\;NH_3-N/m^3{\cdot}day$, an average nitrification efficiency of 90% was achieved. Nitrite build-up began at an ammonia loading rate of $l.8kg\;NH_3-N/m^3{\cdot}day$, at which the free ammonia concentration was estimated to be above 1 mg/L. During the nitrite build-up, the ratio of influent $NH_3-N$ concentration to the DO concentration of the reactor liquor and the ratio of effluent $NH_3-N$ concentration to the DO concentration of the reactor liquor was measured to be above 100 and 2, respectively. Considering the advantages of nitritation/denitrification, a fluidized bed reactor could be an effective means for biological nitrification of wastewaters with high ammonia concentration.

Long term groundwater quality change using electrical conductivity and nitrate in the Geum River Basin, South Korea (금강유역의 전기전도도와 질산염을 이용한 장기적인 지하수 수질변화)

  • The study has examined alterations in groundwater quality by investigating the influence of rainfall on electrical conductivity (EC) and nitrate concentration in the groundwater of the Geum River Basin in South Korea. Mann Kendall and Sen's Slope estimator were employed to analyze the trends and estimate the trend's magnitude. The administrative map of the study area was utilized to assess the trends of these parameters within each administrative region. Seventeen years (from 2005 to 2021) of data on EC, groundwater levels (GWL), precipitation, and six years (from 2015 to 2020) of nitrate concentration data were utilized for this analysis. The results indicate that, in most administrative regions, there has been an increase in nitrate concentration, and EC, whereas precipitation has seen a slight decrease in a downstream and an increasing trend in upstream. The correlation coefficients calculated between these parameters reveal that there is no direct impact of precipitation on nitrate and EC, but a negative correlation was observed between GWL and EC. The most significant increasing trend in nitrate concentration was observed in two districts (Iksan and Gunsan ), which correspond to regions with significant agricultural activity; about 50% of these districts area are used for agricultural activities.

  • 한천 올리고당은 효소인 아가라제에 의하여 제조하였으며 제조에 있어서 효소의 농도, 반응 온도 등에 따른 최적 제조조건을 규명하였으며 한천 올리고당을 GPC로 분자량을 측정하였을 때 분자량이 약 4,200 Da이었다. 또한 한천올리고당의 항산화 작용 및 아질산 소거능을 측정한 결과 항산화 효과가 비타민 C보다는 약간 낮지만 68%정도의 비교적 높은 항산화 활성을 나타내었으며 한천 올리고당이 이산화질소의 과잉생성을 억제하여 정상레벨로 유지하는 것을 알 수 있었다.

  • Representive cured products such as ham and sausage produced in Korea were purchased at retail and cooked using heating tools such as a gas range (GR), an electric range (ER) and electric range after boiled (BE). Changes of N-nitrosamine (NA), nitrate and nitrite in the cured meats containing< $2.0\;\mu\textrm{g}/kg$ of N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) were checked and analyzed during their cooking process. Contents of nitrate and nitrite in ham products prior to cooking were 2.0 and 1.8 mg/kg, respectively; their contents in regular hams were slightly increased, but those of nitrate in press hams were decreased while those of nitrite were increased during its cooking process. Their contents in sausage products were 1.8 and 0.9 mg/kg; those of nitrate were decreased, while nitrite were slightly increased during its cooking process. NDMA detected only NA in all the collected cured products. Changes of NDMA, regardless of cooking methods, tend to drastically increase in all samples after their cooking; Its contents were increased by average 6.0~70.7 times in the GR samples, by average 2.4~39.2 times in the ER samples and by average 7.0~56.3 times in the BE samples. Virtually, the fact that all of this nitrosamine appeared to arise by the action of precursor such as NOx was produced during the cooking of cured products.

Characteristics of Microbial Distribution of Nitrifiers and Nitrogen Removal in Membrane Bioreactor by Fluorescence in situ Hybridization (막/생물반응기에서 Fluorescence in situ Hybridization 기법을 이용한 질산화 미생물 분포특성 및 질소제거 연구)

  • An aerobic submerged membrane bioreactor (MBR) treating ammonium wastewater was studied in respect of nitrification characteristics and distribution of nitrification bacteria over a period of 350 days. MBR was fed with ammonium concentration of 500-1000 mg $NH_4-N/L$ at a nitrogen load of $1-2kg\;N/m^3{\cdot}d$. Overall ammonium oxidation rate increased with dissolved oxygen (DO) concentration, temperature, and sludge retention time (SRT). Under a higher concentration of free ammonia ($NH_3-N$) due to the decrease of ammonium oxidation rate, the nitrite ratio ($NO_2-N/NO_x-N$) in the effluent increased. The sudden collapse of nitrification efficiency accompanied by sludge foaming and the increase of sludge volume index (SVI) was observed unexpectedly during the operation. At the later stage of operation, additional carbon source was fed to the MBR and resulted in twice higher value of SVI and the decrease of ammonium oxidation rate. In fluorescence in situ hybridization (FISH) analysis, genus Nitrosomonas which is specifically hybridized with probe NSM156 was initially the dominant ammonia oxidizing bacteria and the amount of Nitrosospira gradually increased. Nitrospira was the dominant nitrite oxidizing bacteria during whole operational period. Significant amount of Nitrobacter was also detected which might due to the high concentration of nitrite maintained in the reactor.

Biofunctional Characteristics of the Water Soluble Browning Reaction Products Isolated from Korean Red Ginseng-Study on the Antimutagenic and Nitrite Scavenging Activities (홍삼으로부터 분리한 수용성 갈변물질의 생리기능적 특성- 돌연변이원성 및 아질산염 소거능을 중심으로)

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate the biofunctional characteristics of water soluble browning reaction products(WS-BRPs) isolated from Korean red ginseng. The antimutagenic effect of WS-BRPs(L, S-1 and S-2 fraction) showed 23∼61% inhibition rates against the indirect mutagen, imidazol quinoline(IQ) induced mutagenicity. Especially, L fraction exhibited a little higher mutagenicity than those of other fractions on Salmonella typhimurium TA 98 and TA 100 at a concentration of 400 $\mu\textrm{g}$/m/, respectively, and it showed about 16∼39% inhibition rates on the nitrite scavenging. L fraction exhibited a little higher nitrite scavenging than those of S-1 and S-2 fractions.

Effects of Nitrite Exposure on Plasma Nitrite Levels and Hepatic Drug-metabolizing Enzymes in the Carp, Cyprinus carpio (아질산 노출이 이스라엘잉어 혈장내 아질산 농도 및 간장 약물대사효소에 미치는 영향)

  • Effects of ambient nitrite, NO$_2$$\^$-/, at 1, 3, 10 and 30 mg/1, on the changes of plasma nitrite/nitrate and on hepatic drug - metabolizing enzyme activity were examined in the juvenile Israeli carp, Cyprinus carpio. When the fish were exposed to 1 and 3 mg/1 NO$_2$$\^$-/, there was an exposure duration-dependent increase in plasma NO$_2$$\^$-/ over the 96-hr period reaching 6∼7 fold excess the ambient concentration. In the fish exposed to 10 mg/1, a plateau concentration of less than 2-fold of the environment was attained in 12 hr. With 30 mg/1, however, the maximal plasma NO$_2$$\^$-/ was 41.25 mg/1 at 12 hr followed by a gradual decline. There was a concentration-dependent increase in methemoglobin (metHb) level in all NO$_2$$\^$-/ -exposed groups and a significant decrease in hematocrit value in 30 mg/l group after 96-hr exposure. Apart from the blunted increase in plasma NO$_2$$\^$-/ with higher NO$_2$$\^$-/ (10 and 30 mg/1) exposure, the ratio of plasma NO$_3$$\^$-/ to NO$_2$$\^$-/ was signifirantly higher in these groups compared to 1 and 3 mg/1. The imbalance in the plasma NO$_3$$\^$-//NO$_2$$\^$-/ at higher NO$_2$$\^$-/ exposure suggests a possible accelerated conversion of NO$_2$$\^$-/ to NO$_3$$\^$-/. Nitrite exposure did not affect the hepatic drug-metabolic activities in juvenile Israeli carp. All these data indicate that disposition of NO$_2$- differ depending upon exposed concentration and that metHb production may not be the exclusive toxic mechanism in carp.

  • Onion, licorice, abgelia root, Chinese date, pine needle, and mulberry leaf were used to extract functional components far onion complex drink. No differences were observed between water extraction at room temperature and methanol extraction in electron-donating ability (EDA), thiosulfinate content (TSC), and ascorbic acid content (AAC), whereas water extraction resulted in higher nitrite-scavenging ability at pH 1.2 and 3.0, and lower superoxide dismutase-like ability than methanol extraction. Level of water extracts prepared by hard-boiling for 3 hr at above $100^{\circ}C$ was higher in all functional abilities except TSC than those prepared at room temperature. Optimal conditions for water extraction and storage were $100-120^{\circ}C$ for 6 hr and low-temperature storage, respectively.

  • Effects of the sediments on water quality, and the consequent survival and growth of cultured fleshy prawns, Penaeus chil1ensis were determined under selected sediment types for 6 weeks. Dissolved oxygen was 5.1-5.9 mgll in both the sediments containing sand alone, and soft sand (50%) and mud (50%). It decreased to 4.6 mgll in the mud after 6 weeks. Nitrite, ammonia and hydrogen sulfide of the seawater were 0.07-0.12, 0.16-0.29 and 0.009~0.014 mgll in both the sediments containing sand alone, and soft sand (50%) and mud (50%). The values, however, increased to 0.15, 0.36 and 0.018 mgll in the mud sediment, respectively. Survival of the prawn was below 60% in bare and mud sediments. It was above 70% in both the sediments containing sand alone, and soft sand (50%) and mud (50%). Growth and food efficiency of the prawn were significantly lower in the 100 % sand than in the sediment containing soft sand (50%) and mud (50%).

  • The content of nitrate and nitrite in germinating soybean was studied in relation to ascorbic acid contents. Nitrate content during soybean germination gradually increased, and root was higher than cotyledon and hypocotyl. Nitrite content was relatively low and maintained under the 1 ppm during germination period. Ascorbic acid content was maximum around 4 days after germination.
