  • Purpose: The aim of this study was to explore the effects of A-solution on halitosis and oral status in preoperative NPO patients. Methods: A nonequivalent control group, non-synchronized pretest-posttest design was used in this study. The participants in this study were 66 patients who were admitted for gynecologic surgery. The experimental treatment was to give oral gargling with A-solution, blended essential oils and diluted with distilled water. To identify the experimental treatment effects, halitosis, salivary pH, and oral status were measured by a portable halitosis detector, visual analogue scale, Bromo Thymol Blue (BTB), Bromo Cresol Purple (BCP) test paper and oral assessment guide. Data were analyzed using $X^2$-test, t-test with PASW 18.0 version. Results: Participants were homogeneous before experimental treatment. Objective halitosis in the experimental group, measured by a portable halitosis detector (t=-8.34, p<.001) was significantly lower than the control group. Subjective halitosis was significantly lower in the experimental group (t=-9.29, p<.001). Salivary pH was significantly different between two groups (t=8.81, p<.001). Oral status was significantly better in the experimental group (t=-13.31, p<.001). Conclusion: These findings indicate that oral gargling using A-solution is effective in reducing patient halitosis, and improving oral status.

Therefore, in particular, it is considered that aroma therapy is one of the most preferred methods for skin care. Therefore, previous studies focused just on clinical effects of aromatherapy while this study focuses on aestheticians by identifying whether performance of aromatherapy, and their contribution to income will influence on satisfaction in aestheticians and customers' intention to reuse aromatherapy service for positive demonstration. The results of the study are presented as follows: First, it is demonstrated that side-effect of aromatherapy, contribution to income, and customer satisfaction have significant effect on professional aestheticians. In particular, in respect to the aestheticians, this study obtains the results rather different from the estimation that customers are satisfied with the professional service though they have side-effect. Second, as the satisfaction in professional aestheticians after skin care service is a significant factor that influences on intention to reuse it, this study concludes that re-management on behaviors is required according to the degrees of satisfaction.

  • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to evaluate the effects of Lavender inhalation on sleep, depression and stress of institutionalized elderly. Methods: The methods used in the study follows a non-equivalent pre- and post-test design. 39 institutionalized elderly were recruited using a convenient sampling method that assigned them to the experimental or the control group. The experimental group were then provided with essential Lavender oil, as part of the aroma inhalation intervention, to inhale before sleeping for 7 days. The collected data were analysed with SPSS 18.0 (windows program), using frequency percentage (%), a Chi-square test and an independent t-test. Results: The results were that the experimental group had significantly higher sleep status scores(t=5.195, p=.000), and lower depression scores (t=-5.479, p=.000), physical stress scores (t=-5.741, p=.000) and psychological stress scores (t=-4.233, p=.000) than those in the control group. Conclusion: This study suggests that aroma inhalation, as part of aroma therapy, be applied and comprehensively adopted as a method of nursing intervention for improvement of sleep, depression and stress for institutionalized elderly.

  • In this paper, we checked health problems of patients who suffered from arthritis. After assessing each patients condition, in order to alleviate their sufferings, we introduced several methods of aromatherapy as a holistic approach to these health problems. Aromatherapy is used of essential oils, which are obtained from aromatic plants, can be defined as a nature-friendly complementary/alternative method, has its great merit in its each way of application. If the arthritis condition is localized, massage, compress or poultices, and hand or foot baths are most effective. Many of essential oils in the recipe have dual benefits, as anti-inflammative and analgesic agents. The Juniper and carrot seed aid in eliminating fluid and toxin accumulation in the joint and surrounding tissue. There are many different courses available and health professional should choose one that is relevant to clinical practice. Considering the future of nursing as a major contribution in the consumer-centered structure of medical health service, aromatherapy as a complementary/alternative method is expected to contribute not only to establishing more effective health service but also to resolving chronic health problems of arthritis.

  • Thirty-one units of pure rosemary essential oil (EO) in domestic and foreign distribution markets were collected. Aromatic components of these samples were analyzed and antioxidant activity was measured. As the result, major aromatic components were identified such as ${\alpha}$-pinene, camphene, ${\beta}$-pinene, 1.8-cineole, verbenone and borneol. Major components of rosemary EO were different according to countries. Essential oil from France had good quality. Essential oil cultivated and extracted in South Korea had more content than the collected essential oil in components of ${\alpha}$-pinene and camphene. Only 16% of the total 31 unit samples satisfied the content of 9 ingredients presented by ISO. The quality of EDA was shown as 4.8-96.0%, remarkable differences per specimen. A total of 31 units, only 13% of EO showed more than 60% antioxidant activity. Difference of antioxidant activity did not correspond with specific component. Essential oil from Swiss had high antioxidant activity.

  • Purposes: This experimental study was designed to verify the effect of inhalation of essential oils on body weight, feed intake, food efficiency rate and serum leptin. Methods: The subjects of this study were 90 growing SD rats(46 males and 44 females). They were allocated into one of four groups, the Fennel group, Patchouli group, Bergamot group and control group. The experimental treatment was the inhalation of aromatherapy essential oils which was applied two times a day for 10 minutes each during 8 weeks. To evaluate the effects, body weight, feed intake, food efficiency rate and serum leptin were measured before and after the treatment. The collected data was analyzed by repeated measures of Kolmogorov-smirnov test and Normal Q-Q plot for nomality, Kruskal Wallis test and $X^2-test$ for experimental effects with the SPSS program. Results: The food efficiency rate was significantly lower in the Patchouli group and Fennel group than in the Bergamot group and control group(P=.000). No significant group effects were found for SD rat's body weight, feeding amount and serum leptin. Conclusion: In conclusion, these findings indicate that the inhalation of essential oils could be effective in lowering the food efficiency rate rather than the feed intake.
