  • We investigated the effect of the concentration of stannous 2-ethylhexanoate catalyst on the esterification rate between adipic acid (AA) and each of two PEG oligomers, diethylene glycol (DEG) and polyethylene glycol (PEG600). The concentration of the catalyst was varied from 0.15 to 2.0 wt.%. To attach hydroxy group to each end of the poly(oxyethylene-co-adipate) synthesized from AA and the PEGs, the esterification was performed with excessive PEG oligomers ([PEG]/[AA]=2) at $170^{\circ}C$. The degree of polymerization of the poly(oxyethylene-co-adipate)diol products were three. The apparent rate constant ($k_{app}$) of the esterification between AA and DEG shows the first order dependency on the catalyst concentration ($k_{app}=0.88[C_{cat}]$), whereas the $k_{app}$ of the esterification between AA and PEG600 has a relation of $k_{app}=0.123[C_{cat}]^{0.55}$ with the catalyst concentration. It is expected that the rate of esterification between AA and DEG has a non-linear dependency on the catalyst concentration as the catalyst concentration approaches to 0.22M.

  • This study demonstrate that polymeric microspheres composed of poly (ethylene adipate) (PEA) and poly (methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) can encapsulate and remarkably stabilize Broussonetia kazinoki root extract. We compared the long-term stability and the activity of Broussonetia kazinoki root extract in polymeric microspheres fabricated with different polymer ratio of PEA and PMMA. PMMA was incorporated to the PEA microsphere in order to reinforce the physical strength of microsphere, and there was no noticeable negative effect on the activity of Broussonetia kazinoki root extract. Optical microscope (OM), polarized microscope (PM), and scanning electron microscope (SEM) results showed that PMMA incorporated microspheres were very spherical and had smoothsurface. On the other hand, PEA microspheres showed relatively irregular morphology due to the low physical strength of microspheres. Moreover, the mushroom tyrosinase activities were measured for testing the inhibitory activity of Broussonetia kazinoki root extract encapsulated in polymeric microspheres, and these microspheres showed the effective suppression of mushroom tyrosinase activity. Consequently, polymeric microspheres produced in this study may be beneficial for the research of improving stability and protecting labile substances incorporated into the polymeric microspheres.

  • Phthalate esters that are used as plasticizers and also found at low levels in foods such as dairy products are often mentioned as suspected endocrine disrupters. The purpose of the present study is to elucidate whether perinatal exposure to di-n-butyl phthalate(DBP), diisononyl phthalate (DINP) and di-2-ethylhexyl adipate (DEHA) affects several aspects of reproductive function in rats especially sexual differentiation of the brain. To this end, the dams were provided with pulverized soy-free diet containing 20, 200, 2,000 and 10,000 ppm of DBP, 40, 400, 4,000 and 20,000 ppm of DINP, or 480, 2,400 and 12,000 ppm of DEHA from gestational day (GD) 15 to postnatal day (PDN) 21, the day of weaning, and serum sex steroid hormone, gonadotropin levels and sexual behaviors after maturation were assessed. At Postnatal week (PNW) 20-21, serum levels of sex steroids and gonadotropins in both male and female rats, as well as estrous cyclicity in females, were not changed by perinatal exposure to DBP, DINP and DEHA, indicating that these chemicals did not affect sexual differentiation of the brain controlling the endocrine system of hypothalamo-pituitary-gonadal (HPG) axis. On the other hand, inhibitory influences on sexual behaviors, especially on ejaculation in males and lordosis in females, were observed by perinatal exposure to these chemicals. These results suggest that these chemicals may act directly on discrete regions of the hypothalamus regulating sexual behaviors, but not regulating gonadotropin secretion, thereby affect sexual differentiation of the brain with a resultant decrease in sex-specific behaviors in adulthood.

  • Polyurethane/melamine phosphate composite foam (MP-PUF) was prepared from poly(adipate)diol/melamine phosphate composite (f=2), polyether-polyol (f=4.6), and PMDI (f=2.5). The thermal properties of MP-PUF such as morphology, closed-cell content, thermal conductivity, and thermal stabilities were characterized. Water was used as a blowing agent, and the composition of melamine phosphate (MP) was maintained at $1.43{\pm}0.3wt%$ of MP-PUF. As the content of water increased, the thermal conductivity of pure polyurethane foam (PUF) decreased, whereas the thermal conductivity of MP-PUF increased. The thermal stabilities of the PUF and the MP-PUF were maximized at 5 php $H_2O$, and then decreased at the higher $H_2O$ contents. The thermal stabilities of MP-PUF were greatly enhanced due to the synergetic effect of MP and urea, which was generated during the blowing process. The temperature of 50% residual mass of MP-PUF increased to $370{\sim}450^{\circ}C$ and the temperature of 30% residual mass exceeded over $700^{\circ}C$. Compared to the PUF, the temperature of 50% residual mass and 30% residual mass were higher than 25 and $70^{\circ}C$, respectively.
