  • The purpose of this study was to explore the concurrent and lagged effects of parental neglect and abuse on longitudinal changes in late childhood school adjustment. This study utilized survey data from the fourth through seventh iterations of the Korean Child Youth Panel Study conducted on fourth-year elementary school students through first-year middle school students. The data was analyzed using latent growth modeling. The results were as follows. First, the level of school adjustment decreased gradually. Second, both neglect and abuse had concurrent effects on school adjustment. Third, neglect had lagged effects on school adjustment but abuse did not. The paper discusses the implications of these results. The results of this study can be used to better understand and support children who have suffered neglect or abuse adjust to school during late childhood.

  • Objective : This study aimed to investigate the mediating effect of play on the relationship between toddlers' sleep habits and problem-solving. Methods : In total, 1,734 participants were selected from the 3rd wave of the Panel Study on Korean Children. A structural equation modeling approach was utilized to examine the relationship among toddlers' play, sleep habits, and problem-solving, as well as to investigate the mediating effect of play. Results : The monthly age of the study participants ranged from 23 to 32 months, with 885 (51.0%) boys and 849 (49.0%) girls. The indirect effects of play on problem-solving skills (β = 0.137, p = .006) were statistically significant, but the direct effects of sleep habits on problem-solving skills (β = -.015, p = .871) and the total effect (β = 0.122, p = .057) were not significant. Conclusion : This study indicated that sleep habits did not have a direct effect on problem-solving ability, but that the indirect effects were significant and fully mediated by play. Incorrect sleep habits can negatively affect lifelong development. Therefore, parents would need to be aware of whether their child is developing good sleep habits during the toddler age.

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of oriental medicine Qi Gong program on the anxiety and self efficacy among children using community child center. With a quasi-experimental design, 88 persons with children using community child center were assigned into an experimental group (n=45) or a control group (n=43). The anxiety and self efficacy were measured at both before and after the oriental medicine Qi Gong program. Date were analyzed with SPSS/WIN using descriptive statistics, t-test, ${\chi}^2$-test and ANOVA. After controlling for self efficacy scores in the experimental group improved more than the control group(t=2.456, p=.016). Anxiety scores were not significant in the experimental group decreased than the others. Oriental medicine Qi Gong program can decreased anxiety and improved self efficacy among children using community child center.

  • This study performed a meta-analysis on 45 research studies conducted in Korea on the relationship between domestic violence experience and juvenile delinquency. The meta-analysis calculated 125 effect sizes. The study then analyzed the effect of exposure to domestic violence on juvenile delinquency and evaluated the relationship according to research variables. The probabilities of juvenile delinquency by children who witnessed domestic violence, experienced violence directly, or experienced child abuse were 14%, 17.8% and 17.2% higher than that of children otherwise, respectively. However, the difference in experience types or child abuse types on mean effect sizes was not statistically significant. Cross effect between the type of domestic violence and the type of juvenile delinquency did not significantly impact the mean effect size of juvenile delinquency. The effect of domestic violence experience on delinquency was highest for junior high students, followed by elementary students and high school students, Difference in the effect size among groups was statistically significant. The effect size with respect to publication year was shown to have a minor static correlation, but the publication type was not meaningful. The study confirmed the effect of domestic violence on juvenile delinquency and emphasized that the responsibility of social environment in juvenile delinquency increase has been overlooked.

A quasi-experimental study employing a nonequivalent control group and pre-post design was conducted. The participants were children aged 9 to 12 years old from community child center in K province (Experimental group=24, Control group=21). The experimental group participated in the program for 8 sessions for 8 weeks. Data were analyzed using ${\chi}^2$-test, independent t-test, repeated measures ANCOVA with SPSS 21.0 program. There were significant differences in depression (F=6.68, p=.013) and self-esteem (F=7.61, p=.009) of participants between experimental group and control group after completion of 8-session magic program. The results indicate that the magic program can be used to improve depression and self-esteem of low-income children.

  • The purpose of this study is to determine the parent-perceived effect of adaptive seating devices on the lives of infant or young children with physical and brain lesion disabilities(age 1-13y) and their families. Using the seating device for disabled parents of 42 people with disabilities who use FIATS-AS to investigate functional outcomes. All parents completed the FIATS-AS 4 times-2 times before and 2 times after their child received a new adaptive seating system. Repeated-measures analysis of variance detected significant mean differences among the FIATS-AS scores. Also to estimating the impact of the new seating intervention for the 3 age cohorts using the FIATS-AS scores. The FIATS-AS detected a significant interaction between age cohort and interview time. Providing adaptive seating devices has been found that the positive effects on guardians. The change was significant in 1~7 years of age. Environmental modification, such as seating and other assistive technology devices, may have an important role to play in the lives of young children with disabilities and their families.

  • This study compared the perceptions of children and their mothers of the effects of school lunch programs on the children's dietary behaviors in elementary schools. Questionnaires were answered by 425 elementary school students and their 412 mothers in the Busan area. The results indicated: The school lunch program had positive effects on children's dietary behaviors such as understanding healthy meals, correcting unbalanced diets, snack intake, attitude toward the meal, table manners, and table hygiene. However, there were still some negative habits in the home related to snack time, reading books or watching television during mealtime, eating foods before seniors have started. The gender of the children and whether the mothers worked or not produced no significant differences (in most cases). Still mothers more positively perceived the effect of school lunch programs on their children's dietary behaviors than did the children themselves. Thus, the school lunch program had positive effects for a balanced diet and making good eating habits. And, therefore, teachers-as well as the dieticians- should actively regard the school lunch program as an educational activity which can produce positive effects for a balanced diet, and make every endeavor to strengthen their relationship with the home.
