  • This study aims to examine developmental trajectories and predictor variables of problem behaviors and school adjustment trajectories among children from low-income families using latent growth modeling. The data was collected from the 2nd year to the 4th year (2012-2014) of a community child center child panel survey conducted by the National Youth Policy Institute. The major findings are as follows. First, as the grade went up, the problem behaviors of children from low-income families increased while school adjustment decreased. Second, multi-level domains, such as individual, school, and family variables influenced school adjustment trajectory, while only individual variables, such as depression, isolation, and motivation for achievement influenced problem behavior trajectory. Third, common protective factors between problem behaviors and school adjustment trajectories were motivation for achievement in and satisfaction of the community child center. Common risk factors between problem behaviors and school adjustment trajectories were isolation and aggression. Based on the results, the implications for child welfare practices were discussed.

  • This study aimed to identify self-worth and self-deprecation trajectories and their associated factors among Korean adolescents. For these purposes, we used latent growth curve modeling involving 2,350 students who participated in the Korea Children and Youth Panel Survey in 2010, 2012, 2014, and 2015. Major findings are as follows: 1) Adolescents' self-worth and self-deprecation increased with time, but the speed gradually changed to a quadratic function model; and 2) the types of predictors affecting self-worth and self-deprecation were different. Specifically, the factors that affected only self-worth were adolescents' relationship with teachers and household income, and the factors that affected only self-deprecation were presence of disease and parental over interference. Factors affecting both self-worth and self-deprecation were child's sex, parental affection, peer trust, and peer alienation. These results suggest that independent intervention is needed for self-worth and self-deprecation. Furthermore, the results can be an important basis for establishing a more focused intervention strategy when intervening in self-worth and self-deprecation in adolescents.

  • This study examines the overall structure among family relationship, self-efficacy, self-esteem, and delinquency of adolescent in single-parent families using structural equation modeling to provide theoretical basis preventable juvenile delinquency. The data of 516 middle and high school students in the research into the promotion policies on children and adolescents' mental health(2012) by the National Youth Policy Institute analysed. The result of this study are: (1) family relationship affects self-efficacy, self-esteem, and delinquency of adolescent, (2) family relationship affects delinquency of adolescent by the mediation of self-esteem, (3) self-efficacy doesn't affect delinquency of adolescent. This study suggests the necessity of both intervention as well as the development implementation of practical methods for the prevention of delinquency of adolescent.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze mediating effects of sense of community between Ego-identity and multicultural acceptance. Struatural analysis is performed with six - year panel survey data of elementary school 1st grade students and middle school 1st grade students from Korean child- Youth Panel survey. The subjects of six - year panel survey data are the sixth grade in the elementary school and High school seniors. The results are as follows. First of all, there are differences in Ego-identity, sense of community and multicultural acceptance between the sixth grade in the elementary school and high school seniors. Second, they are related. Third, regression analysis shows that Ego-identity and sense of community have an affect on multicultural acceptance. Fourth, partial mediating effect is suitable for whole youth and sixth grader and complect mediation effect is suitable for high school seniors. In early adolescents, Ego-identity plays a direct role in multicultural acceptance. But in late adolescents, sense of community plays a direct role in multicultural acceptance. Base on these results, for improving adolescents multicultural acceptance, It has suggested educational programs that helps to enhance Ego-identity and sense of community.

  • Adolescence is a period of transition from child to adult and is a very important period in which to think about the direction to go in the future and establish one's ego. However, the level of life satisfaction experienced by Korean youths in the adolescent period has been shown to be the lowest among OECD countries. It is very critical to understand which factors are important in determining the level of life satisfaction and how they affect it. In this study, to analyze the factors which affect the life satisfaction of youths and their learning attitude - essential school activity prior to life satisfaction in the youth period, we firstly focused on the relationships with their parents, peers and teachers as potential factors affecting their learning attitude and life satisfaction. This study found that Parenting Style, Peer Attachment and Relationship with Teachers significantly influenced Life Satisfaction either directly or indirectly. We analyzed the structural relationships among these factors using the structure equation model, discussed the analysis results and concluded with further research directions.

  • The current study examined whether multicultural students' depression level mediated between cultural adaptation stress and school life adaptation in South Korea. A total of 1,329 students in the sixth year (2016) of the National Youth Policy Institute (NYPI) 's multicultural youth panel data were analyzed using regression analysis. The main results of the study are as follows. First, cultural adaptation stress of adolescents in multicultural families had a direct influence on school life adaptation. Second, depression partly mediated between cultural adaptation stress and school life adaptation. These findings have major implications for policies and interventions in regard to cultural adaptation stress and school life adaptation of the youth in multicultrual families.

  • This study examines the effects of adolescents' volunteer activities on their development of sense of community. When examining the effects of volunteer activities, both quantity and quality sides of volunteer activities were considered in the research model and besides the direct effects of volunteer activities on their sense of community, the mediating role of self-esteem and peer attachment were also examined. The data set of conducted by National Youth Policy Institute was reanalyzed for this study. The subjects of this study were 1,426 first-grade middle school students who had experiences of volunteer activities. The results of the study are as follows. First, the total hours of volunteer activities and the satisfaction with volunteer activities were positively related to their sense of community respectively. In an integrative model which combines both quantity and quality aspects of volunteer activities, however, only the satisfaction with volunteer activities was found to be significant. This means that the satisfaction with and reflective learning after volunteer activities are more important sides of adolescents' volunteer activities than whether and how many times they had experiences in volunteer activities. Second, the satisfaction with volunteer activities was found to enhance adolescents' self-esteem and peer attachment and the changes in their personal traits again led to a higher sense of community. Therefore, both the direct effects of volunteer activities and indirect effects through self-esteem and peer attachment were proved. Based on the results of the study, the need and ways to improve the management system of adolescents' volunteer activities were suggested.

  • This study aimed to explore the influence of family characteristics on the work-life balance of early adolescents. A series of data analyses was conducted on adolescents' use of time in daily life on the basis of 2018 Korean Children and Youth Panel Survey (KCYPS 2018). We found that the work-life balance of youth is related to their parents' health status, presence of older siblings, household income, parenting attitude, parent-child communication time, and mother's occupation. The work-life balance of the fifth graders is more likely to be influenced by family characteristics compared with that of the eighth graders. In particular, the fifth graders' sleep deprivation is affected by the mother's occupation, but there is no significant effect on the eighth graders' sleep deprivation. An important factor in skipping breakfast is household income, with adolescents from low-income families tending to skip breakfast more than five days a week. In addition, parents' health status and parenting attitude are significantly related to skipping of breakfast in early adolescents. Household income is related to the after-school private tutoring hours of both the fifth and eighth graders; however, parenting attitude and mother's occupation are also significant influencing factors of the fifth graders' after-school study. Mother's occupation is related to excessive cell phone use; specifically, the fifth graders whose mothers work white-collar jobs, sales and services or manufacturing are more likely to play with cell phones more than three hours a day than those whose mothers are full-time housewives. These results suggest that the work-life balance policies targeted at the family characteristics of adolescents can improve family environments in a manner that enhances adolescents' life balance, thus supporting the well-being of early adolescents and their families.

  • The purpose of this study is to compare with three juvenile delinquency theories on adolescents' status offenses including Hirschi's social bonding theory, Agnew's general strain theory, and Akers' social learning theory. The data derived from a sample of 2,337 middle school students taken from National Youth Policy Institute in 2011-2012. Multiple OLS regression analysis revealed that variables from social learning theory were strongly supported as an explanation for adolescents' status offenses, while variables from general strain theory were not supported. The social learning model explained 12.0% of the variance in adolescents' status offenses. However, general strain variables explained 2.6% of the variance in the dependant variable and 6.2% of the variance in adolescents' status offenses were explained by the social bonding variables. The present research made important contributions the further utilization of social learning in investigating many of the damaging forms of social deviance which exist in our society.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out how individual, family, and school factors influence adolescents' depression, and to explore the long-term influence between somatic symptom and depression. To do this, data from two points of the 4th wave (year of 2013) and the 6th wave (year of 2015) of the first-year middle school panel survey (KCYPS) were used and structural equation model analysis was conducted on 1,668 adolescents. As for results, frist, in terms of individual factors, gender, physical health status, and self-resilience significantly affected depression in adolescents. Second, among school factors, learning activities and peer relationship significantly affected depression in adolescents. Third, somatic symptom and depression had effects and auto-regressive effects over time. Based on these results, the prevention and intervention measures for somatic symptom and depression of adolescents were discussed. Future study is needed include varaiables of parental mental health that affect depression in adolescents.
