  • Host rock of Cheonjeon-ri petroglyph is shale belonging to the Daegu Formation of Cretaceous Gyeongsang Supergroup. The rocks were hornfelsified by thermal alteration, and shows high density and hardness. The petroglyph forms weathered zone with certain depth, and has difference in mineral and chemical composition from the unweathered zone. As the physical deterioration evaluations, most of cracks on the surface appear parallel to the bedding, and are concentrated in the upper part with relatively low density. Breakout parts are occurred in the upper and lower parts of the petroglyph, accounting for 6.0% of the total area and occurs to have been created by the wedging action of cracks crossing. The first exfoliation parts occupying the surface were 23.8% of the total area, the second exfoliations covered with 9.3%, and the exfoliation parts with three or more times were calculated as 3.4%. It is interpreted that this is not due to natural weathering, and the thermal shock caused by the cremation custom here in the past. As the ultrasonic properties, the petroglyph indicates highly strength in the horizontal direction parallel to bedding, and the area with little physical damage recorded mean of 4,684 m/s, but the area with severe cracks and exfoliations showed difference from 2,597 to 3,382 m/s on average. Physical deterioration to the Cheonjeon-ri petroglyph occurred to influence by repeated weathering, which caused the rock surface to become more severe than the inside and the binding force of minerals to weaken. Therefore, it can be understood that when greater stress occurs in the weathered zone than in the unweathered zone, the relatively weathered surface loses its support and exfoliation occurs.

  • This paper deals with the characteristics of earth pressure to the debris-fall prevention walls which usually are installed in front of steep slope. Such walls have narrow backfill width where the active soil wedge can not be developed fully. The earth pressure to such walls ue affected by the movement of wall and arching effects due to the friction developing on the surface of adjacent ground slope and wall and therefore cannot be analyzed and calculated reliably. The study is carried out through laboratory model tests using centrifuge test. Test results reveal that the earth pressure to the debris-fall prevention wall depends largely on the inclination angle of the ground slope and the wall movement. The earth pressure reduction due to wall movement was observed at the upper half of wall, while the arching effect was significant at the lower half especially in the case of steep ground slope. It can be said that from the result of this study in the design of a debris-fall prevention wall the earth pressure should be determined considering the inclination of ground slope and the condition of wall movement during and after construction.

  • Catastrophic fracture cannot be avoided after cracks(initiated from pre-existing defects) propagate rapidly with speeds comparable to a sound wave velocity of the materials. Preventing catastropic failure, crack arrest fracture toughness defined from dynamic(or kinetic) fracture mechanics point of view has been introduced in determining accurate and/or proper crack arrest fracture toughness of a material. For the past decades, many studies have been carried out to render proper theoretical and experimental backgrounds on the use of the static plain strain crack arrest fracture toughness, $K_{1a}$ (which seems to be a material property). $K_{1a}$ has been used to predict the performance of thick walled structures and has been considered as a measure of the ability of a material to stop a fast running crack. Determination of such a material property is of prime importance to the nuclear reactor pressure vessel and bridge materials industries. However, standards procedures for measuring toughness associated with fast running cracks are yet to exist. This study intends to give insight on the determination of the crack arrest fracture toughness of materials such as polymethylmethacrylate(PMMA), SM45C-steel, and A1 7075-T6. The effects of crack jump lengths and fast crack initiation stress intensity factor on the determination of $K_{1a}$ have been experimentally observed.erved.

  • In this study, hole-boss locking washers were developed to prevent vibrational loosening, and a benchmark test was conducted to compare these washers with existing wedge locking washers, which are imported and high-priced. The developed washers consist of an upper washer with bosses and a lower washer with holes, and the bosses are caught in the holes so that the bolt is not loosened. Additionally, the top side of the upper washer and the underside of the lower washer have small wedges perpendicular to the direction of the bolt loosening, suppressing slips. A test by the Korea Test Laboratory indicated that the ratio of the loosening torque to the joining torque is greater than 70%, confirming that the developed washers have a sufficiently high anti-loosening performance. A Junker test apparatus was manufactured for the testing of vibrational loosening and a test comparison between the proposed washers and the existing wedge locking washers shows that the proposed washers have a slower reduction in the clamping force and a higher loosening-resistance in a vibrational circumstance compared with the wedge locking washers. These results indicate that the developed washers demonstrate a high performance and boast price competitiveness.

  • This paper concerns with a safe and efficient transportation method of hot-coils on cargo ship. An automatic loading and unloading system of hot-coils by cassettes, which secure the geometrically unstable cargo, hot-coil, by supporting with wedges on both sides, is considered efficient and profitable. Safety of hot-coil on cassette and subsequently safety of total cargo ship are directly affected by the wedge angle of cassette. For optimal design of the cassette wedge angle, a dynamic model of hot-coil/cassette cargo is developed with constraint of no relative motions between the coil and the cassette. Force equilibrium conditions between resultant alternating inertia forces on hot-coil due to motions of cargo ship in waves and reactions forces from cassette wedge surfaces are derived and consequently a numerical simulation code is implemented. Cassette wedge angle of 37 degree is taken as optimal by considering dynamic stability of hot-coil and strength of cassette structure. Performance of the designed cassette wedge angle is investigated by scaled bench test.

  • The rock anchorage of a suspension bridge is an outstanding anchorage type from environmental and economical perspective, although it should be applied when the bearing foundation is fresh enough to resist large cable loads. In practice, geotechnical engineers have encountered difficulties in designing the anchorage structure due to the fact that the physical behaviors of rocks against cable loads have not yet been fully proved and its design method was not established yet. In this study, model tests and numerical studies were performed to evaluate the behavior of the rock anchorage system planned under hard rock layers in domestic islands, and results suggest that the shape of asymmetric rock wedges can resist the tension loads with self weight and shear resistance. Additionally, real scale trial tests were carried out to verify the accuracy of an inclined drilling penetrating hard rock layers to install tendon to the bearing plate.

  • This study was carried out to obtain basic data for the type selection of furrow openers for the no-tillage soybean planter trailed by the two-wheel tractor from the standpoint of minimum draft and good performance of furrowing. For this study, two models of furrow opener, hoe and disc type, were tested on the artificial soil stuffed in the moving soil bin. The results obtained were as follows. In the case of disc furrow opener, the drafts were measured according to various diameters of discs under the condition of disc angle $8^{\circ}$ and $16^{\circ}$, working depth 3cm and 6cm, working speed 2.75cm/sec. Minimum draft appeared when the diameter of disc was about 28cm and the drafts increased as the diameter of discs became larger or smaller than this diameter. Specific draft showed almost same tendencies as above but showed the minimum when the diameter was about 30cm. For the purpose of controlling the seeding depth, the relationships between draft and working depths, 3cm and 6cm, were tested. The variations of draft concerning the various working depths showed linear changes and were affected in higher degree by depths than other factors. There were general tendencies at both working depths, 3cm and 6cm, that total draft showed the minimum with the disc diameter of about 28cm and specific draft showed it with the disc diameter of about 30cm regardless of disc angle and working speed. For the purpose of controlling the working width and speed, the relationships among drafts, disc angle and working speed were investigated and there were general tendencies that the draft increased as the angle and speed were increased and the draft was affected more by speed than by angle. To compare the hoe-type with disc-type opener, the specific drafts of hoe openers were compared with those of disc opener of $16^{\circ}$ angle and 30cm diameter. The specific draft of disc-type opener with the diameter of 30cm was $0.35{\sim}0.5kg/cm^2$, while $0.71{\sim}1.02kg/cm^2$ in the case of hoe type with the lift angle of $20^{\circ}$ which is 2 times as much as that of disc type in average value. And the furrows opened by disc openers were cleaner than those opened by hoe openers.

  • Our country's leading granite weathered soil of the ground slope failures that occur in cutting slope most cases, it does not require in-depth to the shear strength most of the surface layer is affected by weathering (1~2 m) at a shallow depth close to the ground, it is important to identify the reliability. Based on the result obtained in actual field investigation, the field slope type was classified by each type of wedge slope, Infinite slope, finite slope -I and finite slope -II, and the slope stability was examined respectively. In addition, using the numerical analysis results, the relationship between the slope inclination angle and safety factor was analyzed and it tried to offer basic data to which the stability in the field slope was able to be estimated by analyzing the safety factor change of the slope according to the slope type. In this study, classified into four types of natural slope, safety factor estimation method by slope types is proposed through the numerical analysis. However, some limit exists in generalizing in this research because it does not test various case studies. Therefore, the case study of a wide range of various sypes to assess the safety of various types slope can be made, accommodate a wide range of field conditions reasonable risk evaluation criteria may be derived.

  • An 80 year-old male with a medical history of angiosarcoma of the scalp visited the Emergency Department complaining of dyspnea, and the chest X-ray revealed pneumothorax. He has undergone scalp resection and radiotherapy three years ago due to angiosarcoma. Due to a persistent air leak, he underwent wedge resection of the lung and was pathologically diagnosed with metastatic angiosarcoma to the lung. He underwent radiotherapy following the lung resection, but he died from his disease at 15 month following surgery due to further aggravation of the lung metastasis. Angiosarcoma is a highly malignant tumor and it frequently occurs on the scalp and face in elderly patients. Angiosarcoma frequently metastasizes to the lung and it may cause pneumothorax as a consequence of a ruptured cavitary lesion. We report here on a case of pneumothorax that was caused by lung metastasis in an elderly patient with a history of angiosarcoma of the scalp.

  • The periodic Quality Assurance (QA) of each radiation treatment related equipments is important one, but quality assurance of the radiation treatment planning system (RTPS) is still not sufficient rather than other related equipments in clinics. Therefore, this study will present and test the periodic QA program to compare, evaluation the efficiency of the treatment planning systems. This QA program is divided to terms for the input, output devices and dosimetric data and categorized to the weekly, monthly, yearly and non-periodically with respect to the job time, frequency of error, priority of importance. CT images of the water equivalent solid phantom with a heterogeneity condition are input into the RTPS to proceed the test. The actual measurement data are obtained by using the ion chamber for the 6 MV, 10 MV photon beam, then compared a calculation data with a measurement data to evaluate the accuracy of the RTPS. Most of results for the accuracy of geometry and beam data are agreed within the error criteria which is recommended from the various advanced country and related societies. This result can be applied to the periodic QA program to improve the treatment outcome as a proper model in Korea and used to evaluate the accuracy of the RTPS.
