  • In the early 1990s, soil nailing was first introduced as method of reinforcement for the slope stability and ground excavation, and as its application was increased the improved soil nailing was also developed. Most recently used for grout soil nailing greatly improve the methods and techniques for self-improvement techniques are classified as soil nailing. As the representative for the grout pressure method to improve the join method pressure grouting and improved method for the self-drilled soil nailing, removable soil nailing, upward soil nailing combined with horizontal drainage system. This paper is to compare upward soil nailing combined with horizontal drainage system with downward direction of the soil nailing. In order to study the limit equilibrium slope stability analysis and comparison with factor of safage, excavation for the vertical displacement for comparison with continuous analysis. According to this study, safage factor is decreased considerably using limit equilibrium analysis and makes no odds for the horizontal displacement when soil nail was installed upward.

  • A series of field pull-out tests were carried out to investigate the behaviour of multi-pressurized soil nails. Ten soil nails were constructed in weathered soil and then, subjected to pull-out loads. The test results showed that the ultimate pull-out resistances of soil nails constructed with high pressure were about 42~142% larger than those obtained from conventional soil nails. The deduced interface shear strength at the ground-grout interface was 71 kPa for conventional soil nails, while higher shear strength of 95~166 kPa was obtained for pressurized nails. The diameter of grouted borehole increased by about 12~27% compared to ordinary soil nails under low pressure. Also, the predicted value by the cavity expansion theory is in good agreement with the measured expanded radius of grout under injection pressure by field pull-out tests.

  • Soil nailing is a reinforcement method used for stabilizing excavated walls or slopes. Due to its much advantages such as ease of construction and economical efficiency, use of soil nailing is increased. However, the soil nail has much disadvantages for use in urban area. The soil nail needs to be installed inevitably beyond private land boundary, which causes rent for use. For this reason, removable soil nailing system was developed. However, the removal rate of this system is just about 50¢¦70%. To resolve this problem, the Fiber Reinforced Plastic (FRP) soil nailing system which does not need to be removed and allows for the installation beyond private land, is developed. In this paper, through theoretical and experimental studies in laboratory and field such as prototype tests, pullout tests, we evaluate the stability and behavior characteristics of the FRP soil nailing system. And, numerical analyses using FLAC2D were performed with respect to various soil conditions, where prototype test for excavation wall and pullout tests were carried out. As a result of this study, the FRP soil nailing systems show similar behavior characteristics with those of removable soil nailing system. Finally, considering the serviceability and mechanical stability of FRP soil nailing systems, it is enough to be used as a good alternative of general soil nailing system.

  • This paper describes a new numerical analysis technique in stability analysis for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails. The installing effect of pressure grouted soil nails can be simulated in this method. Shear strength reduction method associated with finite element method is used for slope stability analysis. Factors of safety for a slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails are compared with those for a natural slope and a slope reinforced with gravity grouted soil nails in order to investigate their reinforcing effects. More than 50% increase in the factor of safety is obtained when the slope is reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails compared to the one with gravity grouted soil nails. The reinforcing effects of pressure grouted soil nails become obvious with increase in their length. The reinforcing mechanism of the pressure grouted soil nails for the slope stability can be explained by the slope failure surface expanding gradually toward the backfill. The increased stability of the slope reinforced with pressure grouted soil nails results mainly from their improved pull-out resistance.

  • When the shear deformation occurs on the slope reinforced with soil nail, a passive earth pressure is induced on the ground around the soil nail and the increase of shear deformation causes the earth pressure variation of the ground and the deformation and member force change of the soil nail. In this study, the shear behavior of the soil nail was analyzed experimentally by inducing the shear deformation in the vertical direction of the soil nail using a large-scale direct shear test equipment and it was verified through numerical analysis. The shear test was performed on the bonded length (6D, 8D, 10D and 12D) of the soil nail separated from the shear surface. As a result, it was observed that the continuous increase of the shear deformation caused the damage of the grout and the effect according to the bonded length was analyzed. Through the model test and the numerical analysis, it was confirmed that the transfer length of the soil nail was 0.2~0.22m, which is larger than 0.1m suggested in the previous study, and the shear zone was in the range of 0.6m from the shear surface.

  • Soil nailing is used as a method of slope stabilization and excavation support. The design method of soil nail are based on experience or assumption of interaction between soil and reinforcement. Most design methods simply considers the tension of reinforcement for analysis of slope stabilization. Soil nails interact with soils under combined loading of shear and tension. Jewell & Pedley suggested a design equation of shear force with bending stiffness and discussed that the magnitude of the maximum shear force is small in comparison with the maximum axal force. However, they have used a very conservative limiting bearing stress on nails. This paper discusses that the shear strength of soil nails should not be disregarded with proper bearing stresses on nails. The modified FHWA design method was proposed by considering shear forces on nails with bending stiffness.

  • As soil nails support a ground by the friction between nails and soils being reinforced, the length of soil nails is important factor for a ground stability. Thus, the soil nail length has to be accurately evaluated in order to secure a ground stability. The goal of this study is to suggest the applicability of the non-destructive method as the basic research for the evaluation of the soil nail length. First, the elastic and electromagnetic waves are adopted to select an applicable method for the soil nails connected by the coupler. Test results show that while the ultrasonic waves are not detected due to the coupler, the electromagnetic waves are free for the influence of the coupler. Second, electromagnetic waves are measured for combined soil nails with the length of 1 m~15 m for the investigation of the characteristics of electromagnetic waves. The travel time of the electromagnetic wave increases with an increase in the soil nail length. In addition, the ground cable is used to apply the electromagnetic waves to pre-installed soil nails. Test results show that the travel time of the electromagnetic wave by using the ground cable increases with an increase in soil nail length. This study demonstrates that the electromagnetic wave may be a promising method for the evaluation of the soil nail length.
