  • The purpose of this study is to find out the tendency and meaning of metaphors for block play. For this purpose, responses from 165 teachers in J area day care centers were collected using sentence completion metaphors. Collected data were analyzed through a categorization process using a qualitative research method based on previous research into metaphor analysis. From the results, first, block play trends from the metaphors were classified into two categories: content of block play, and characteristics of block play. The frequency in the order for Building Value of Play was higher. For the content of block play, composition had the highest frequency for trait of block play, and the basis of growth and development had the highest frequency in the Value of Block Play category. Second, the meanings of block play metaphors are composing, expressing, imagining, pleasure, freedom, and value of block play under Category Play, which was recognized as the basis of development, emotional development, social development, and creativity. Based on the results of the study, the value and role of block play in early childhood teacher education and in-service education should be further emphasized.

  • The purpose of this study is to find out whether changed interactions due to reformatting has a significant effect on the play attribute of children's play from an instrumental point of view. Based on the study of Roser Caillois theory of play (Agon, Mimicry, Area, Ilinx) and previous studies, a questionnaire was written and experimental design was carried out through brick stack which are most preferred in the whole development of children. Brick stack were selected from physical and electronic spaces and the survey was conducted with children's experiences by dividing into experimental group and comparative group. Correlation and T-test results, the brick stack by reformating showed significant difference in the play attributes (Agon, Mimicry, Area, Ilinx) of Rose Caillois and we found that the effectiveness of play is doubled in the electronic space. Play properties evenly distributed in electronic space brick stacking suggest that pleasure and fun can double.

  • This study used qualitative methods to understand kindergarten girls' perception of block play and to devise teacher strategies for encouraging block play for girls who had not participated in block play. Results showed that girls preferred art and home-dramatic play over block play. Girls' preference not to play with blocks was based on harassment by boys and confusion about how to build with blocks and the fact that pride in block structures could not be communicated to their parents at home. Consequently, a girls-only block play area was designed with appropriate accessories along with presentation of some Polaroid pictures. Results were that girls enjoyed block play and made ingenious block structures.

  • The purpose of this study is to improve the understanding of children's play behavior by exploring the relationship between variables predicting children's preferred play areas using the data of the Korean Children's Panel, which is a national longitudinal study data. For this purpose, we investigated how children's gender, creativity, and peer play behaviors affect children's preferred play areas on their preferred play areas. The research results revealed in this study are as follows. First, there were differences in creativity, peer play behaviors, and play area preference according to children's gender. Second, as a result of examining the effect of children's creativity and peer play behaviors on play area preference, factors influencing language area, art area, math & manipulative area, and role play area preference were different based on block play area preference group. This study has great implications in that it provides basic data for children's play behavior by exploring variables that affect children's preference for play areas.

  • With the popularity and the advanced graphics hardware technology of mobile devices, various mobile applications that help children with physical activities have been studied. This paper presents SandUp, a mobile application that guides the play of building sand castles using artificial intelligence and augmented reality(AR) technology. In the process of building the sandcastle, children can interactively explore the target virtual sandcastle through the smartphone display using AR technology. In addition, to help children complete the sandcastle, SandUp informs the sand shape and task required step by step and provides visual and auditory feedback while recognizing progress in real-time using the phone's camera and deep learning classification. We prototyped our SandUp app using Flutter and TensorFlow Lite. To evaluate the usability and effectiveness of the proposed SandUp, we conducted a questionnaire survey on 50 adults and a user study on 20 children aged 4~7 years. The survey results showed that SandUp effectively helps build the sandcastle with proper interactive guidance. Based on the results from the user study on children and feedback from their parents, we also derived usability issues that can be further improved and suggested future research directions.

  • The tangible virtual heritage environment employs a tangible interface to increase social interaction and engages user's understanding of cultural heritage with the activities in the virtual environment. Tangible Moyangsung is an tangible virtual heritage environment of a Korean war-defensive castle Moyangsung, and it allows a group of users to collaboratively play the tangible interface for fortifying the broken walls. This paper suggests an overview of cultural meanings behind Moyangsung and represents the details in the design and implementation of the Tangible Moyangsung system. It will also discuss improvements and further research directions.

  • This research employs the grounded theory approach among various qualitative methodologies in order to reach a deep understanding of both the experiential process that children undergo in block play and the essential meaning of it. The objects of this study are 22 children(female 7, male 15) in a 5-year-old class of K kindergarten at Guro district, Seoul. The result of this research shows that first, children take pleasure in block play because of the delight and sense of accomplishment in building, the joy in demolishing, and the happiness of embracing the world through dramatic play with building structures. Second, the characteristics of children's block play are popular subject of the play, decision of the subject, impromptu transformation and elaboration of building structures, and flow of the play according to friend/non-friend relationship. Third, the implicit rules shared by children have more significant influences upon the block play than the agreed rules at the beginning of semester.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the perception and need of the early childhood education field on authentication of teaching materials and implements for young children. To achieve this, a survey was carried out on 350 teachers and directors in Daejeon-based kindergartens and child-care centers from September 21 to September 30, 2013. The results of the analysis are as follows. First, 59.4% of them thought that it needed the evaluation authentication of teaching materials and implements for young children. 32.9% of them had a high perception of the early childhood education field. 39.4% of them had high need of the early childhood education field. And 45.1% of them expected a high effect of introducing the evaluation authentication system of teaching materials and implements for young children. Second, most of them had the highest need of the evaluation authentication of teaching materials and implements for young children in terms of education, followed by function and field. And most of them placed the highest emphasis on social development, safety and language in terms of education, function and field, respectively. Consequently, the use of teaching materials and implements, which the social development and safety in terms of education and function are respectively evaluated and authenticated by the diversity of teaching materials and implements for young children, has need of the high evaluation and authentication of teaching materials and implements that can guarantee the quality when young children use a lot of experiment and observation implements such as block play, reading materials, manipulating materials, making implements.
