  • The performance of the railway bogie is classified into the stability and the steering performance. Testing for the bogie stability is conducted on the roller rig, but testing for the bogie steering performance on test facility is very difficult, so the testing for the vehicle curving performance is conducted on the real curve track. Testing the railway bogie on the full scale test rig is desirable, but it caused many problems relating to test costs and test time. As a possible alternative to overcome these problems, a small scaled test rig is actively used in the field of bogie stability. Thus, in this paper, we have studied a scaled track to test the bogie steering performance. For this purpose, we designed the 1/5 scaled test track equivalent to radius 200 curve and confirmed the validity of the testing for the bogie steering performance on the sealed curve track through the testing using 1/5 scaled bogie.

  • Wireless communication technology (WAVE) for vehicles, which is the core technology behind the next-generation intelligent transport system (C-ITS), is used to deliver information about vehicles to prevent traffic accidents and traffic situations that may arise between vehicles and infrastructure. Similar traffic issues often arise in marine scenarios. Currently, AIS is being used as a means of transmitting information such as the status of relative vessels, but research is being carried out to solve problems with AIS such as overloading by applying wireless communication technology for vehicles to the sea. In this study, a collision warning system suitable for small-sized vessels was developed based on the marine application of WAVE for vehicles verified through prior research, and the adequacy of this collision warning system was reviewed through a practical test. It is expected that this system will contribute greatly to future e-Navigation applications or self-driving ships as well as to preventing marine accidents.

  • Korea Maritime Safety Tribunal (KMST) statistics released in of 2019 indicated that most collision accidents involving small-size vessels with less than 20 gross-tonnage occur mainly due to operational carelessness, such as forward-looking negligence and unskilled vessel control. As an effective remedy, training and education for vessel operators are being strengthened to prevent accidents. However, collision accidents are increasing, and technical measures are continuously developed to reduce accidents caused by human factors. In this study, an avoidance algorithm and prototype of terminal-controller against collision between two nearby vessels was developed for implementation on relative navigation control by adopting WAVE telecommunication technology. Moreover, several sea trial tests were performed to verify the collision avoidance algorithm and control system using two fishing vessels for dif erent scenarios.

  • Among excursion and ferry boats, small boats with a length of less than 12 m are exempted from the stability standard according to the ship safety act. The boarding capacity of these small excursion and ferry boats is calculated by the seating area according to the excursion ship and ferry business act. Many excursion and ferry boats have installed deck structures such as awnings after launching. Therefore, this study attempted to analyze the cause of the accident by estimating the stability based on the case of an actual ferry boat capsizing accident. The analysis results indicated that passengers stood up to disembark at the same time while the boarding capacity was exceeded. However, even if the ferry boat complied with the boarding capacity, a possibility of capsize existed if the passengers on one side of the boat stood up. Therefore, the following were suggested to improve the safety: calculating the boarding capacity using the stability test and recommending the maximum total weight for the boarding capacity.

  • Developing high-fidelity Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) simulation methods used to evaluate the airwake characteristics along a flight deck of a large ship, the various kind of data such as actual ship measurement and wind tunnel results are required to verify the accuracy of CFD simulation. Inflow velocity profile at the bow, local unsteady flow field data around the flight deck, and highly reliable wind tunnel data which were measured after reviewing Atmospheric Boundary Layer (ABL) simulation and Reynolds Number effects were also used to determine the key parameters such as turbulence model, time resolution and accuracy, grid resolution and type, inflow condition, domain size, simulation length, and so on in STAR CCM+. Velocity ratio and turbulent intensity difference between Full-scale CFD and actual ship measurement at the measurement points show less than 2% and 1.7% respectively. And differences in velocity ratio and turbulence intensity between wind tunnel test and small-scale CFD are both less than 2.2%. Based upon this fact, the selected parameters in CFD simulation are highly reliable for a specific wind condition.

  • Recently, with the development of digital technology, new research cases which applied new technology were increased. Also, the related equipment and services are being developed in the industry. Before new equipment is developed and released, it must go through a verification process. In the maritime industry, equipment is verified through simulation tests or environmental tests on land. However, if only the test on land is conducted, verification data in the actual operating environment might be insufficient. In this paper, considerations are described in the development of an onboard demonstration scenario for verification in the operating environment.

  • In order to present a predictive drift model, Jeju National University's training ship was tested for about 11 hours and 40 minutes, and 81 samples that selected one of the entire samples at ten-minute intervals were subjected to regression analysis after verifying outliers and influence points. In the outlier and influence point analysis, although there is a part where the wind direction exceeds 1 in the DFBETAS (difference in Betas) value, the CV (cumulative variable) value is 6%, close to 1. Therefore, it was judged that there would be no problem in conducting multiple regression analyses on samples. The standard regression coefficient showed how much current and wind affect the dependent variable. It showed that current speed and direction were the most important variables for drift speed and direction, with values of 47.1% and 58.1%, respectively. The analysis showed that the statistical values indicated the fit of the model at the significance level of 0.05 for multiple regression analysis. The multiple correlation coefficients indicating the degree of influence on the dependent variable were 83.2% and 89.0%, respectively. The determination of coefficients were 69.3% and 79.3%, and the adjusted determination of coefficients were 67.6% and 78.3%, respectively. In this study, a more quantitative prediction model will be presented because it is performed after identifying outliers and influence points of sample data before multiple regression analysis. Therefore, many studies will be active in the future by combining them.

  • A text-based communication system has been developed with a communication function on AIS and display and input function on ECDIS as a way to complement voice communication. It features no linguistic error and is not affected by VHF restrictions on use and noise. The text communication system is designed to use messages for clear intentions and further improves convenience of users by using various UI through software. It works without additional hardware installation and modification and can transmit a sentence by selecting only via Message Banner Interface without keyboard input and furthermore has a advantage to enhance processing speed through its own message coding and decoding. It is determined as the most useful alternative to reduce language limitations and recognition errors of the user and solve the problem of various voice communications on VHF. In addition, it will help to prevent collisions between ships with decrease in VHF use, accurate communication and request of cooperation based on text at heavy traffic areas.

  • In this study, we have conducted a work on homogenizer development which is operated by high shearing force generated by stator and rotor inside it. To investigate the performance for homogenization and atomization of homogenizer, Bunker-C (IFO 380 cSt) was used as a fuel for experiment. Pre-treatment of bunker-C was carried out with homogenizer developed in this study. Oil purifier was used to investigate effect of oil sludge reduction after pre-treatment. Experimental result showed that the amount of sludge of fuel oil after pre-treatment with homogenizer has decreased by 13 %. To confirm combustion efficiency, Bunker-C which have pre-treatment with homogenizer and purified after are burned in boiler system. The result showed that CO concentration in exhaust gas was decreased. These results mean that if the homogenizer which is developed in this study for marine fuel oil is applied on real vessels, oil costs and operating costs can be reduced.

  • The maneuverabilities of 240 GT class skipjack pole and liner were studied, based on the maneuvering indices and the data which were obtained from Z test of the experimental ship, the m.s. KWANACKSAN, the training ship of the National Fisheries University of Busan. The maneuvering indices K' of the experimental ship were 0.611(at 10$^{\circ}$Z test), 0.622(at 20$^{\circ}$Z test) and 0.556(at 30$^{\circ}$Z test). Her maneuvering indices T' were 1.094(at 10$^{\circ}$Z test), 1.695(at 20$^{\circ}$Z test) and 1.367(at 30$^{\circ}$Z test). The above calculated values K', T' showed that her turning ability at helm angle 20$^{\circ}$ and her obeying ability at helm angle 10$^{\circ}$ were most effective. As it appeared that the calculated K'-values of the experimental ship were smaller than the standard K'-values of different kinds of ships and her overshoot angles at her Z test were greater than those of them, her turning ability was found to be lower. When the experimental ship took a turn at her 10$^{\circ}$Z test, running distance was about 8.3 times her own length and didn't exceed the standard maneuvering distance, 5 to 11 times ship's own length, therefore she was considered to have good maneuverabilities synthetically.
