  • The wave-impact load on offshore structures can be divided into green-water and wave-slamming impact loads. These wave impact loads are known to have strong nonlinear characteristics. Although the wave impact loads are dealt with in the current classification rules in the shipping industry, their strong nonlinear characteristics are not considered in detail. Therefore, to investigate these characteristics, wave-impact loads induced by a breaking wave on a circular cylinder were analyzed. A model test was carried out to measure the wave-impact loads due to breaking waves in a two-dimensional (2D) wave tank. To generate a breaking wave, the focusing wave method was applied. A series of 2D tank tests under a horizontal wave impact was carried out to investigate the structural responses of the cylindrical structure, which were obtained from the measured model test data. According to the results, we proposed a structural damage-estimation procedure of an offshore tubular member due to a wave impact load. Furthermore, a recommended wave-impact load is suggested that considers the minimum required thickness of each member. From the experimental results, we found that the required minimum thickness is dependent on the impact pressure located in a three-dimensional space on the surface of a tubular member.

선원의 사용자에게 제공되는 최종방사능을 평가하는데 유용하게 사용될 수 있다.r의 분포를 보였다.cting the effect of earthquake on structures. • The wave load and its influence on the response of offshore structure have been well investigated through the statistical approach based on the linear theory. The linear approach has a limitation to apply the extreme condition such as extreme wave, which corresponds to extreme value of wave spectrum. The main topic of present study is to develop an efficient numerical method to predict wave load induced by extreme wave. As a numerical method, finite element method based on variational principle is adopted. The frequency-focusing method is applied to generate the extreme wave in the numerical wave tank. The wave load on the bottom mounted vertical cylinder is investigated. The hydroelastic response of the vertical cylinder is also investigated so as to compare the wave loads with the rigid body case in the extreme wave condition.

  • Existing conventional model for analysis of shallow water flow just assumed the internal boundary condition as free-slip, which resulted in the wrong prediction about the velocity, vorticity, water level, shear stress distribution, and time variation of drag and lift force around a structure. In this study, a finite element model that can predict flow characteristics around the structure accurately was developed and internal boundary conditions were generalized as partial slip condition using slip length concept. Laminar flow characteristics behind circular cylinder were analyzed by varying the internal boundary conditions. The simulation results of (1) time variations of longitudinal and transverse velocities, and vorticity; (2) wake length; (3) vortex shedding phenomena by slip length; (4) and mass conservation showed that the vortex shedding had never observed and laminar flow like creeping motion was occurred under free-slip condition. Assignment of partial slip condition changed the velocity distribution on the cylinder surface and influenced the magnitude of the shear stress and the occurrence of vorticity so that the period of vortex shedding was reduced compared with the case of no slip condition. The maximum mass conservation error occurred in the case of no slip condition, which had the value of 0.73%, and there was 0.21 % reduction in the maximum mass conservation error by changing the internal boundary condition from no slip to partial slip condition.

  • In EMAT field, spiral RF coils are much more widely used when compared with solenoid coils. In the field of the magnetostrictive strip transducers for long range ultrasonic testing of cylindrical structures, however, solenoid coils has been used. This seems to be attributed to the difficulty in fabricating low frequency (i.e., large size) spiral coils. In this paper, we describe a method for fabricating spiral coil magnetostrictive strip guided wave transducers from FFC (flexible flat cable). It is demonstrated through a comparison experiment that the spiral coil transducer has much superior performance (sensitivity, SNR, and guided wave direction control capability) than the previous transducer with solenoid coils.

  • In heavy industrial fields such as power plant and chemical plant, it is often necessary to restore damaged part of large machinery and structure which is installed in the hazard working place. In this paper, to estimate stress distribution which occurs during damage and restoration of cylindrical beam structure, the finite element technique has been used. A finite element model was verified by experiment for non deformed cylindrical beam structure. The displacements and elastic recovery have an excellent agreement between experiment and finite element analysis. The variations of stress distribution on deformation and restoration procedure for surfaces have been examined. The maximum von Mises stress appears in the surface for deformation and restoration procedure. In deformation procedure, the maximum stress occurs in the vicinity of support body. In restoration procedure, the maximum stress occurs in the vicinity of the fixing body. The fixing body allows avoiding stress concentration in adjacent support structure boundary.

  • The slender structures such as high rise building or marine riser are highly susceptible to dynamic force exerted by fluid-structure interactions among which vortex-induced vibration(VIV) is the main cause of dynamic unstability of the structural system. If VIV occurs in natural frequency regime of the structure, fatigue failure likely happens by so-called lock-in phenomenon. This study presents the numerical analysis of dynamic behavior of both structure and fluid in the lock-in regimes and investigates the subjacent phenomena to hold the resonance frequency in spite of the change of flow condition. Unsteady and laminar flow was considered for a two-dimensional circular cylinder which was assumed to move freely in 1 degree of freedom in the direction orthogonal to the uniform inflow. Fluid-structure interaction was implemented by solving both unsteady flow and dynamic motion of the structure sequentially in each time step where the fluid domain was remeshed considering the movement of the body. The results show reasonable agreements with previous studies and reveal characteristic features of the lock-in phenomena. Not only the lift force but also drag force are drastically increasing during the lock-in regime, the vertical displacement of the cylinder reaches up to 20% of the diameter of the cylinder. The correlation analysis between lift and vertical displacement clearly show the dramatic change of the phase difference from in-phase to out-of-phase when the cylinder experiences lock-in. From the results, it can be postulated that the change of phase difference and flow condition is responsible for the resonating behavior of the structure during lock-in.

  • In this paper, dynamic modeling of hull structure including surface-bonded piezoelectric composite actuator was developed and structural vibration control performance was evaluated. Cylindrical shell structure with end-caps was considered as a host structure which could be used as a simple model of fuselage of aircraft and underwater vehicles. An advanced piezoelectric composite, macro-fiber composite(MFC), which has been developed in NASA Langley Research Center was applied for the effective structural vibration control. MFC has great flexibility by using piezoceramic fiber sheet and enhanced piezoelectric effect for in-plane motion by utilizing interdigitated electrode. Governing Equations were derived from the finite element model and modal characteristics were investigated. Modal test was conducted to verify the finite element model. Optimal controller was designed and implemented for the evaluation of vibration control performance. Structural vibration was controlled effectively by applying proper control input to the piezoelectric actuators.
