Belief emotion expression was negatively correlated with communication competence. Hierarchical regression analysis showed that body-image, education degree, and belief emotion expression explained 24.9 % of communication competence. • Alexithymia is characterized by difficulties identifying and describing feelings, impoverished fantasy life, and concrete and poorly introspective thinking. Alexithymic patients have been reported to show a stable deficit with regard to processing and regulating emotions. Eating disorders are characterized by a persistent disturbance of eating or eating-related behavior that significantly impairs physical health or psychosocial functioning. Like alexithymic patients, patients with eating disorders show the impaired capacity to process and regulate emotions. There is a robust body of literature showing patients with eating disorders are more alexithymic than healthy controls. Specifically, patients with eating disorders experience difficulties identifying and describing emotions. Childhood maltreatment can increase the risk for depression and alexithymia, which can in turn lead to disordered eating symptoms. Also, higher levels of alexithymia are correlated with a less favorable clinical outcome in patients with eating disorder. Therefore, treatments to help processing and regulating emotions of eating disorder patients with pronounced alexithymic traits may seem to lead to a higher possibility of recovery.

  • The authors investigated the relationship between the response to the external stimulation and ability of verbal behavior in the patients with somatoform disorder who have pain. The subjects consisted of 34 patients(male 10, female 24) and 37 normal controls(male 19, female 18). Pressure pain thesholds were measured by algometer and alexithymia was assessed by Toronto Alexithymia Scale(TAS). Somatization Scale of SCL-90R and Parental Bonding Instrument were also used. It was shown that 82.4% of the patients had chronic somatic complaints. The mean values of TAS, degree of somatic symptoms and pressure pain thresholds were significantly higher in the patient group than in the normal controls. 44.1% of the patients was considered alexithymia group and there was no correlation between scores of alexithymia and value of pressure pain thresholds. In conclusion, the patients with somatoform disorder who had pain were dull in pain perception to external physical stimulation. This result suggested that their low perception of pain could be closely related with chronicity of illness. And the Poverty of verbal expression of inner emotion was suggested to be one of the factors affecting somatization and difficulty in psychotherapy.

  • This study tries to investigate the relationship between physical perception and creative thinking of dancers by dance imagery training programs. The inner imagery and the external expression of dancers are a divergent expression process of autosuggestion, and substantiate the relationship between physical perception and creative thinking. The key point consists in the active thinking process of problem recognition and problem solving by imagination, and means a new perceptivity and the communication capability. Dance imagery is a perception training based on the integration principle of body and soul, and so dancers should create a new approach of communication through the diversity of wide inner imagination and the active thinking of external expression.

  • This study proposes to find out what effects physical effort using props has on infants' ability in relation to their creative physical expression and physical self-concept. This study targets three-year-old preschoolers who attend S and T nursery, located in Yeonje, Busan, of which 16 belong to an experimental group. The research tools used in the study are the creative physical expression test by Kim Eun-Shim(1994), which is the modified version of Bae Hyun-Suck's testing tool(1990), and an altered version of the questionnaire focusing on physical self-concept by Whang Sun-Gack(2001). The experimental group is divided into a large and small sub-group and then physical activities involving props are done by these divided experimental groups once or twice a week for 12 weeks, while outdoor activities are carried out with the comparison group once or twice a week for 12 weeks. For both groups, a total of 20 experiments are done. To obtain answers to the research questions, an individual version of the T-test is conducted using means and standard variations of the experimental and comparison groups. The results of this study are as follows : 1) the physical efforts of the experimental group using props reaped more positive effects as regards creative physical expression than the comparison group, 2) the positive effect on the participants' physical self-concept is also more evident in the case of the experimental group.
