In order to analyze synthetically geomorphological processes of marine terrace in Korea, this study deals with the distribution of marine terraces, stratification of sedimentary layers, physicochemical properties of deposits, and formative ages of marine terraces based on OSL(Optically Stimulated Luminescence) absolute age at coastal area of Gwangyang Bay in central part of the South Coast. As a result of comparison with physicochemical properties on diverse geomorphic materials, there is not enough distinction in them, because of recycling and mixing of materials at Gwangyang Bay having a geomorphic closure. In Gwangyang bay coast, marine terraces are discovered at least 3 levels and have a small area. Formative age of 1st Terrace, as the lowest level ranging in $10{\sim}13m$ above the sea level, is estimated at MIS(Marine Isotope Oxygen Stage) 5a, based on OSL age dating and properties of deposits. Uplifting rate is calculated at 0.141m/ka in Gwangyang bay coast. For application to this rate, 2nd terrace($18{\sim}22m$) is estimated at MIS 5e, 3rd terrace($27{\sim}32m$) is latter part of MIS 7. Consequently, we might conclude that uplifting and geomorphic process of marine terrace in South Coast is similar to East Coast during the Late Pleistocene in Korea.
Sambucus pendula Nakai, which is an endemic on Ulleung Island of Korea, is characterized by a large pendulous inflorescence and small fruit. A set of 256 individuals were used to investigate the patterns of intraspecific variation of S. racemosa subsp. kamtchatica, S. racemosa subsp. sieboldiana, and S. williamsii including S. pendula using PCA (principal components analysis). This analysis showed that S. pendula was distinct based on its large inflorescence and long peduncle. Our data showed a morphological distinction between subsp. kamtchatica from northeastern areas and subsp. sieboldiana from Jeju Island, but the two taxa overlap in the southern and eastern parts of Korea in terms of chromosome number, color of style, and allozyme data. Our study agrees that S. pendula on Ulleung Island may be the result of genetic drift that occurred during isolation since the Quarternary period. This has been suggested as a reason for the genetic differences observed between two taxa and would explain the unique variation patterns of S. pendula. However, the morphological differentiation between the S. racemosa complex and S. pendula is not considered sufficient to warrant recognition of specific status. Therefore, we recommend that only one polymorphic species of S. racemosa in Eurasia be recognized and that S. pendula be considered a subspecies of S. racemosa.
The purpose of this study is to present the possibility a utilization of the tertiary mudstone in Pohang as road subsoil material through pilot experiments on the road embankment structure. This mudstone is an unconsolidated rock that is distributed in the soft rock sedimentary layer, the tertiary layer of the Cenozoic, and causes physical problems such as slaking, swelling, and reduced shear strength and chemical problem like acid drainage. In order to solve various complex problems, an laboratory mixing test was conducted, and the optimal mixing conditions of the tertiary mudstone (90%), composite slag (steel making 70%, blast furnace 30%), and neutralization and coating agent treatment were derived. In order to prove its utilization, a real-scale road embankment structure was constructed and tests were conducted for each section. The pre-processing section is stable due to the design of optimal mixing conditions, while in post-processing section, natural weathering proceeded rapidly, and structural problems were concerned. Since the effect of neutralizing and coating agents was confirmed in temporary-staking section, the neutralizing and coating agents can be applied during the temporary storage period.

The purpose of this study is to develop a STEAM program for teaching climate change through CLAMP (Climate-Leaf Analysis Multivariate Program) paleoclimate inquiry in connection with high school 'Integrated Science' subject. In order to do so, we analyzed the 2015 revised national curriculum and science textbook in terms of the PDIE instructional design model, and developed the teaching-learning materials for 10 class hours through expert panel discussion and pilot test. According to the STEAM class procedure, in the situation presentation stage, the fossil leaves were collected from the dicotyledon plants near school, and the LMA (Leaf Margin Analysis) climate inquiry activity. was presented as the learning goal. During the creative design stage, students were taught about geology and leaf fossils in the study region, and CLAMP input data (31 characteristics of morphotype and leaf architectural of fossil leaves) were given. In the emotional experience and new challenge stage, we collected leaf fossils for outdoor learning, explored paleoclimate with CLAMP method, and promoted climatic literacy in the process of discussing tendencies and causes of Cenozoic's climate change. The validity of the development program was assessed (CVI .84) as being suitable for development purpose in all items through the process of establishing reliability among expert panel. In order to apply the program to the high school, a pilot test was conducted to supplement the discrepancies and to review the suitability. The satisfaction rate of the participants was 4.48, and the program was complemented with their opinions. This study will enable high school students to have practical knowledge and reacting volition for climate change, and contribute to fostering students' climate literacy.

The basaltic rocks of Daljeon-ri columnar joint (Natural Monuments # 415) and Noeseongsan Noerok site (Natural Monuments # 547) were analysed in order to understand basalt types of two areas. The basaltic rocks of the Pohang Daljeon-ri columnar joint show a typical porphyritic texture containing phenocrysts (olivine and clinopyroxene) and groundmasses composed of clinopyroxene, plagioclase, and opaque minerals,. In contrast, basaltic rocks of Noeseongsan Noerok are characterized by fine-grained groundmass with large phenocrysts of plagioclase. Other analysis such as magnetic susceptibility, X-ray diffraction and X-ray fluorescence also support the petrological differences of two basalt rocks. The Daljeon-ri basaltic rocks are plotted on phonotephrite volcanic rocks of alkaline series in TAS(total alkali silica), and on within plate basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. The Noeseongsan basalts, on the other hand, are plotted on basaltic andesite to andesite of sub-alkaline series in TAS, and on volcanic arc basalt in Zr-Ti diagram. These results indicate that the original mantle materials between two basalt rocks were different each other, which probably originated from the change of a tectonic setting in the southeastern Korean peninsula during the Miocene.
Indonesia coal is widely consumed as a major energy source in Asian countries, such as China, India, and Korea. In the paper, the characteristics of the coal-bearing basin and coal deposits in Indonesia are comprehensively reviewed using the exploration data accumulated through the coal exploration projects supported by Korean government subsidy. Cenozoic coal bearing sedimentary basins in Indonesia extensively contain coal deposits and are most productive in East Asia. Properties of coal deposits are variable depending on stratigraphy, depositional histories and tectonics. Eocene coal deposits tend to have thinner coal thickness and fewer numbers of coal seams, but have been major exploration targets due to higher calorific value and good coal quality. Late Oligocene-Early Miocene coal deposits occur in small scales, but are suitable enough for small to medium-sized coal mines. Miocene-Pliocene coal deposits, which are widely distributed across East Kalimantan and Sumatra, are being actively mined by taking advantage of thick coal thickness and abundant reserves in spite of their lower calorific values. The experience of various exploration informs that we need to have an overall understanding on geological conditions for successful coal exploration. The details on coal-bearing basin and coal deposits in Indonesia provided through the paper will be useful data for up-coming exploration activities by Korean companies.

The VS30 map is used as a key variable for site amplification in the ShakeMap, which predicts ground motion at any site. However, no VS30 map considering Korean geology and geomorphology has been developed yet. To develop a proxy-based VS30 map, we used 1,101 VS profiles obtained from a geophysical survey and collected proxy layers of geological and topographical information for the Korean Peninsula. Then, VS30 prediction models were developed using linear regression analysis for each geological age considering the distribution of VS30. As a result, models depending on geomorphology were suggested per each geologic group, including Quaternary, Fill, Ocean, Mesozoic group and Precambrian. Resolution of map is doubled from that of VS30 map by U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). Standard deviation of residual in natural log of proxy-based VS30 map is 0.233, whereas standard deviation of slope-based USGS VS30 map is 0.387. Therefore, the proxy-based VS30 map developed in this study is expected to have less uncertainty and to contribute to predicting more accurately the ground motion amplitude.

The aims of this study is about distribution characteristics of tidal coastal landforms, and that changing process in the Hampyeung Bay, which has a semi-enclosed bay like basin shape without inflow of stream, the mouth of open sea is narrow and forms with wide ends toward inland sea. The source of deposits are moved materials by tidal currents and from coastal slopes. Main landform elements of study area consist of tidal flat, tidal channels, intertidal sand bar, sea cliffs, and sea terrace. Tidal flats is classified with mud flat and mixed flat by grain size composition. Mud flats have developed at the shoreline area that tidal flat is closed to the continuity of gentle slope, and mixed flat developed at the foot of the sea cliffs and sea terraces. Quaternary deposits were identified in the coastal materials sedimented by the sea-level change. According to the analysis of grain size composition during last ten years, sands and silt has increased 2% and 6% respectively, clay has been decreased by 9%. The concaved tidal flats are colonized by salt plants. Areal changes of salt plants expanded near four times from 2.4km2 at the year 2001 to 9.3km2 at the year 2009. During the same periods, mean grain size became coarser from 6.5φ to 4.5φ at the salt plants area.

This work is to review the granite landforms studies by Korean geographers. It is verified that geomorphlogical characteristics of granite present landscapes characterized by 1) in case of mountains, are difficultly or irregularly weathered, so as to develop rocky forms such as domes, cliffs, and tors ; 2) in case of stream valley that is inter-massif lowland, low relief hills and flood plains with alluvium. All these facts owe to the difference of weathering mode granite properties. The granite hills and alluvial plains of southwestern coastal parts in Korean peninsula is low undulatory and large owing not only to the existence of highly weathered granitic regolith, but also to frequent flooding. Cultivated brownish field, orchard, meadow and forest are located at granite hills. On the other hand paddy rice field at granite alluvial plains. Korean peninsula have endured erodible geomorphlogical processes since Miocene when warping it up. Therefore many intermontane basins are located on the weathered granite areas which are surrounded by mountains composed of much less Precambrian gneiss complex. In fact, intermontane basin is mainly linear fault-line valley. The landforms of the intermontane basins are characterized by gentle piedmont slopes, alluvial fans, fluvial terraces and alluvial plains.

This study summarizes the research history of fluvial terraces in Korea and examines the geomorphic properties of fluvial terraces in Korea based on the previous works. The research history of fluvial terraces in Korea can be divided into the three periods. The theories of fluvial terraces were spread by the early geomorphologists during the period of Japanese colonial era to mid-1980s. The dissertations on the fluvial terraces were intensively published during the late 1980s to 1990s and their discussions were the center of geomorphology researches in Korea. Since 2000s, the discussions have become more mature and researches have been quantitatively increased as the various methodologies have been developed. The fluvial terraces in Korea are mostly developed in the western and eastern parts of the Taebaek Mountains, upper and middle reaches of Han and Nakdong River, and in the western slopes of Sobaek Mountains, middle reaches of Namhan River, upper and middle reaches of Geum and Seomjin River. Along these rivers in actively uplifted areas, fluvial terraces with much higher altitude from riverbed are observable and incision rates are relatively high. In the sense of the formation ages, they have developed in not regular patterns by the climatic changes during the Quaternary, but in more complicated aspects by the environmental conditions such as climate, hydrology, geology and geomorphology in the specific drainage basins.
