  • The species diversity of Betaproteobacteria in the Sumunmulbengdui Wetland Area of Jeju Island was studied using culture based techniques, and candidates for novel taxa were screened. Twenty two novel bacterial strains belonging to Betaproteobacteria were isolated, which could be assigned to 16 genera of 4 families, namely Burkholderiaceae (3 strains), Comamonadaceae (8 strains), Oxalobacteraceae (5 strains), Neisseriaceae (5 strains), and an unassigned group belonging to Burkholderiales (1 strain) based 16S rRNA gene sequences. The genus Chromobacterium contained three candidates of novel species, and each of the genera Burkholderia, Comamonas, Pelomonas and Herbaspirillum contained two candidates respectively. Through the analysis of membrane fatty acid profiles and physiological properties using API 20NE as well as morphological and cultural properties, each of the isolates was found to form potentially novel species. Brief description of 22 potential candidates for new species or subspecies is given accordingly.

  • We describe a new taxon of Goodyera (Orchidaceae), G. ${\times}$ tamnaensis N.S. Lee, K.S. Lee, S.H. Yeau & C.S. Lee, sp. nov., from Jeju Island. This taxon is presumed to be a hybrid between G. schlechtendaliana and G. velutina based on several morphological characteristics, i.e., leaf venation, a patterned leaf surface and raised leaf epidermal cells, the color of the flower and the bract, the lateral sepal shape, and the hair length. The morphological characteristics and illustrations of the species based on the holotype are provided together with photographs of the habitat.

  • Though numerous Korean plants were described by $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$, there has been no comprehensive taxonomic examination of those taxa. The taxonomic literature has been thoroughly reexamined to determine the taxonomic status of $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}'s}$ taxa reported in serial papers of the Decades plantarum novarum using plant specimens from Korea. It was confirmed that $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$ described a total of 275 Korean taxa including a new genus, Hydrolirion $H. L{\acute{e}}v.$, which is now merged into the genus Blyxa Noronha ex Thou. Among 231 of the taxa described as species, 17 are currently recognized as species or varieties. The taxonomic status of 52 taxa were proved disputable as species. There were also 11 taxa which have never been a subject of discussion among Korean taxonomists.

  • A new taxon, Hymenophyllum wrightii f. serratum C.S. Lee & K. Lee (Hymenophyllaceae), forma nov. was collected and described from forests in Mt. Halla, Jeju-do, Korea. This taxon, H. wrightii f. serratum C.S. Lee & K. Lee (vernacular name: 'Gu-reum-cheo-nyeo-i-kki') was distinguished from H. wrightii f. wrightii by having smaller leaves, broader basal part of leaf blade, broad-ovate laminae, larger sori and serrate margins of lips of involucres. The new taxon's name is based on serrate margin shape of the lips. A Korean name, 'Gu-reum-cheo-nyeo-i-kki', was newly given based on its habitat. Descriptions and its photograph in the habitat are provided along with a key to the species of Hymenophyllum from Korea.

  • To confirm the taxonomic identity of taxa described by $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}$, H. H. A, a French plant taxonomist, in the serial papers of Decades plantarum novarum based on the collections of Fathers Faurie and Taquet from the Korean peninsula, we examined the numerous references that contained taxonomic opinions about $L{\acute{e}}veill{\acute{e}}^{\prime}s$ taxa. Among them, 146 taxa were confirmed as conspecific with other existing taxa. Of them, 79 taxa, including Ajuga devestita, were listed as a synonym of only one species. Sixty-seven taxa, including Bidens robertianifolia, were listed as synonyms of two or more species according to taxonomists. Eight taxa, including Aconitum coreanum, were considered illegitimate names because of later homonym, or other problems. Five taxa, including Rhododendron hallaisanense, were treated either as distinct or conspecific taxa depending on taxonomists.

  • In this study, we evaluated complex media with influent sewage water (ISW) to isolate novel taxa of bacteria. It was possible to cultivate 13 genera using the complex media with ISW. Additionally, more diverse genera were identified at 37℃ than at 25℃, using the complex media with ISW. Total 12 strains of 179 bacterial isolates were shared less than 97% 16S rRNA gene sequence similarities with any known species. These isolates could be assigned to genera Tessaracoccus, Paracoccus, or Candidimonas (or Paralcaligenes).
