Migration of Low Molecular Weight Substances from Expanded Polystyrene Cup to Aqueous Food Simulant (발포 폴리스티렌 용기로부터 증류수로의 저분자물질 이행)

  • Migration of low molecular weight components from expanded polystyrene (ESP) to distilled water was measured at different temperature conditions. Overall migration and specific monomer migration were measured. Diffusion model based on Fick's law was used to determine the apparent diffusion coefficients at various experimental conditions. The overall and specific migration levels were estimated to give some practical implications for regulatory guideline development and safe package design. Diffusion coefficients for overall migration in KMnO$_4$ oxidizable extractives and specific migration of styrene monomer from ESP at 6$0^{\circ}C$ were 0.030 and 6.8${\times}$10$^{-5}$ $\textrm{mm}^2$/h, respectively. Their temperature dependence could be explained by Arrhenius equation with respective activation energies of 80.5 and 98.6 kJ/㏖. Experimental conditions ensuring desired migration level were suggested for reliable examination of migration from the packaging material. Some explanatory estimations of migrations were given for some typical conditions of potential usages.

Risk Assessment of Heavy Metals Migrated from Plastic Food Utensils, Containers, and Packaging Distributed in Korea (국내 유통 식품용 플라스틱 기구 및 용기, 포장의 중금속 위해도 평가)

  • Heavy metals can be intentionally or unintentionally introduced into plastic food utensils, containers, and packaging (PFUCP) as additives or contaminants, which can be ingested with food by humans. Here, seven-heavy metals (lead, cadmium, nickel, chromium, antimony, copper, and manganese) with toxicity concerns were selected, and risk assessment was done by establishing their migration from 137 PFUCP products made of 16 materials distributed in Korea. Migration of heavy metals was examined by applying 4% acetic acid as a food simulant (70℃, 30 minutes) to the PFUCP products. Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS) was employed for the analysis of migrated heavy metals, and the reliability of quantitative results was confirmed by checking linearity, LOD, LOQ, recovery, precision, and expanded uncertainty. As a result of monitoring, heavy metals were detected at a level of non-detection to 8.76 ± 11.87 ㎍/L and most of the heavy metals investigated were only detected at trace amounts of less than 1 ㎍/L on average. However, antimony migrated from PET products was significantly higher than other groups. Risk assessment revealed that all the heavy metals investigated were safe with a margin of exposure above 311. Collectively, we demonstrated that heavy metals migrated from PFUCP products distributed in Korea appear to be within the safe range.

  • The levels of butyltin compounds in poly(vinyl chloride) (PVC) food packaging using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) were monitored. The analytical method, involving the ethylation with sodium tetraethylborate, was found to be selective and sensitive for mono-n-butyltin (MBT), di-n-butyltin (DBT), and tri-n-butyltin (TBT), validated by a $0.005\;{\mu}g/mL$ limit of detection (LOD), an $R^2>0.999$ for linearity, and >90% of recovery, respectively. Finally, none of the commercial food wraps and gaskets showed detectable levels of butyltin compounds.

The Determination of Perfluorooctane sulfonate in Food Packing Materials by HPLC-MS/MS (식품 포장재 중의 퍼플루오르옥탄설포네이트 분석)

  • Determination of PFOS in instant food packing materials by LC-MS/MS was developed. The procedure involves an extraction of the Food Packing Materials with 100% methanol soxcelet extraction method. The LC separation was performed by Hypersil Gold ($150mm{\times}2.1mm$ 5 um) with mobile phases of 2 mM amoniumacetate solution and acetonitrile. The Mass spectral acquisition was done in negative ESI/SRM using the TSQ Quantum Ultra. With this method, good linear relationship, sensitivity and reproducibility were obtained. The rate of recoveries of PFOS from paper material spiked with 1.0 ug/L were 99.84%, respectively. The limit of quantitation and limit of detection were below 0.03 ug/L and 0.009 ug/L. The method had been applied to determination of PFOS in instant food packing materials.

Manufacturing Multi-degradable Food Packaging Films and Their Degradibility (복합분해성 플라스틱 식품포장 필름의 제조 및 분해성)

  • Multi-degradable master hatch (M/B) was prepared and 0.05 mm polyethylene (PP) food packaging films containing 0, 10, and 20% M/B were manufactured by inflation film processing. The films were exposed to UV radiation, fungi, and heat in order to observe their photolysis, biodegradability, and thermal degradability, respectively. While pure PP film maintained more than 70% of its original elongation after 8 weeks of UV radiation, an almost perfect loss in the elongation of PP film containing 20% M/B was observed. Significant decreases in elongation of PP films by heat treatment $(68{\pm}2^{\circ}C)$ were also found in samples containing the multi-degradable M/B. By observing changes in film surface after the inoculation of fungi using scanning electron microscopy (SEM), the biodegradability of plastic film could be accelerated with the addition of multi-degradable M/B. The results of the mulching test in yard showed that adding multi-degradable M/B can effectively degrade plastic films in natural environmental conditions without interrupting the growth of plants.

Quality Factor Determination and Shelf-Life Prediction of Emulsified Ginseng Drink (인삼 유화 음료의 품질 인자 규명 및 저장 수명 예측)

  • Quality factors of emulsified ginseng drink were determined during storage at various temperatures, and its shelf-life was predicted based on changes in emulsion stability, acidify, viscosity, and yellowness. Viscosity was highly dependent on storage temperature. Emulsion stability changed rapidly during early storage period (1st step), then slowly thereafter (2nd step). $Q_{10}$ values of emulsion stability were 2.50 and 1.38 for 1st and 2nd steps, respectively. Viscosity, acidity, and yellowness showed $Q_{10}$ values of 3.45, 1.77, and 1.99, respectively. Although $Q_{10}$ value of 2 has been generally used to predict shelf stability of food materials, our results suggest adopting same $Q_{10}$ value to predict shelf stability of emulsified ginseng drink is not appropriate.

Changes in physical characteristics of white pan bread by addition of GABA rice bran and its extract (GABA 미강 및 미강추출물 첨가에 의한 식빵의 텍스처 및 저장성의 변화)

  • A rice bran physically treated to increase the residual gamma amino butyric acid (GABA) content (200 mg/100 g) or its hot-water extract (200 mg/100 g) was added into a white pan bread, and changes in the physical properties including color, and volume and texture changes during storage at room temperature were examined. The addition of bran powders had negative effects on bread quality and storage stability whereas that of rice bran extract (RBE) improved the storage stability of bread. The lightness of bread crumbs decreased but the volume of bread slightly increased after addition of the RBE. The increase in crumb hardness during storage was retarded by the RBE addition. The residual concentration of GABA in bread was increased 38-fold when 20% of RBE was added. The addition of RBE to white pan bread improved the resistance to staling and health-promoting function because of GABA.

Comparison of extracted amounts and patterns of microwavable ready-to-meal plastic packaging materials (전자레인지 조리 식품 용기의 용출 특성 비교)

  • Increasing use of plastics in food packaging materials has led to the issue of food-plastic packaging materials mutual interactions. Rapid development of new microwavable ready-to-meal products requires suitable plastic packaging materials for safe heating with the contained food. However, data is still required to diminish consumers' safety concern about ready to meal packaging materials. Amounts and patterns of extracted materials from the ready-to-meal packaging materials of Korea and Japan by heat treatments ($120^{\circ}C$ for 30 min.) was investigated and compared by using Gas chromatography. Total peak number of extracted materials from Korea packaging materials was six while that of extracted materials from Japan's was only two. Moreover, the extracted amounts of packaging materials from Korea company was much higher than those of Japan's. Additional research is needed to justify the reason why extracted materials from packaging materials from Korea be much more occurred, and how the amounts from Korea packaging materials can be reduced.

  • The purpose of this study is to analyze the RFID recognition performance by level of water. A 13.56 MHz RFID management system for packaged liquid food logistics is consisted of antenna, reader, passive type tags, and embedded controller. The tests were conducted at different level of water, distances between tag and antenna, and position of attached tags. To analyze the RFID recognition performance, maximum recognition distances for a container and recognition rates for a logistics made of 27 containers were measured and analyzed. The maximum recognition distance for a container was different depending on position of attached tags, and attached tag at upside position showed a good performance. But, the recognition rate of 27 containers showed a good ability for attached tags at front side position, 30~35 cm distance to antenna, and water level 1. Therefore, to manage packaged liquid food logistics using RFID system, position of attached tag, distances between tag and antenna, and level of water should be considered.
