  • The aim of this study was to examine the current situation of otter inhabitation and conservation and to collect basic information for establishing appropriate policies. We conducted the study around the Bukhan river from April to October 2009, mostly focusing on otter distribution, feeding habits, threats, and conservation measures. We divided the study area into 2 sectors: the dam area and the stream. We found 39 spraint sites in the dam area and 70 in the stream area. A significant difference was observed in the number of spraint sites between the upper stream and the lower stream. To evaluate the feeding habit, we collected and analyzed the frequency and bulk occurrence of the spraints. Among the prey items, fish were the most numerous (36.99%) followed by amphibians (17.22%). Fish showed the highest bulk occurrence in the dam area, and the bulk occurrence of amphibians and insects seemed to increase in the stream area. However, the bulk occurrence in the dam area seemed to be lower than that in the stream area (ANOVA, F = 3.99, p < 0.05). Fyke nets and abandoned fishing nets were found to be the most threatening factors. Further research on the systematic management of otters and the use of stop grids is required for better conservation of otters.

  • The aim of this study is to examine feeding habits of the Korean water deer(Hydropotes inermis argyropus) from its rumen contents using a PCR-DGGE method. For this study, rumen contents were collected from water deer causalities by natural death or road-kill in two different sites(Cheorwon, Gangwon province and the Eastern part of Jeonnam province). DNA was extracted from rumen contents of a total of 44 individuals. Two primers, rbcLZ1aF(GC) and rbcL19bR, were used for PCR amplifications of ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase large subunit (rbcL) gene. Among 44 samples, twenty-nine samples were successfully amplified by PCRs. The 29 PCR products of partial rbcL gene were applied for PCR-DGGE. Totally, six families of plants were detected from the diet analyses. Five families of plants were found in Cheorwon, Gangwon province, but only three families of plants were found in the Eastern part of Jeonnam province. The PCR-DGGE method will provide us with a potential tool to study feeding habits of ungulates including water deer, even though our results failed to identify the prey plants at the level of species.

  • This study aims feeding habit of the Korean water deer(Hydropotes inermis argyropus) using a visual analysis of rumen contents of 44 individuals. The samples were collected from Cheorwon(Gangwon province) and the eastern part of Jeonnam province. Based on the analysis, a total of 15 orders, 18 families and 13 species were identified. Among them, Solanceae(53.8%) and Graminease(30.3%) showed the highest proportions. Plants of 13 orders, 15 families and 10 species were found and forbs(70.21%) and Solanceae(54.9%) were most preferred in Cheorwon. Eight orders, 7 families and 4 species were found in the Eastern parts of Jeonnam province, and Gramineae(78.6%) and woody plants(14.70%) was most preferred. Among four seasons, Gramineae in spring(80.6%) and autumn(68.8%), Leguminosae(75.9%) in summer, and Solanceae(85.4%) in winter were the highest proportions.

  • This study was to evaluate the application of microhistological analysis to collect information on food materials of korean water deer from september to October 2006. For microhistological analysis we extracted type-materials of 4 plant species ($Ipomoea$ $batatas$, $Rubus$ $coreanus$, $Glycine$ $max$, and $Pueraria$ $thunbergiana$) from fecal pellets of korean water deer ($Hydropotes$ $inermis$) and then made preparations of the fecal materials for microscopic analysis. The fecal preparations were compared with reference preparation under the microscope. In microscopic analysis of fecal preparations, we could identify the four plant species by the followings: tip shape and morphology of trichomes, epidermal cell, morphological composition and shape of stomatal apparatus, arrangement of long-cell, and distribution of crystals in cells. According to the comparisons of the preparations, the morphology of trichome, epidermal cell and stomata are similar between both preparations of the fecal pellets and the references, respectively. This methodology will contribute to understanding feeding behavior and behavioural ecology by climate change of other hervibores as well as korean water deers.

  • This work is to find the-remedy of silk worm diseases due to feeding them with some of antibiotics. So it is safely believed that we take the advantage of the medicine in sericulture as that in the medical fields. The results obtained indicated that it increased their weight, changed the body's color into light yellow, and made some different habits in spinning to feed the worms on some of antibiotics. In the view of those facts, we can expect to give rise to change the genotypes, and so improve the characteristics of the races in future.

  • Wild boar have increased in recent years in Korea where damage to agricultural crops is considered as a social issue. The ecological studies on wild boar are essential for the effective management in the future. During May and December 2012, We collected 79 wild boar stomach samples from culling program implementation to reduce agricultural damage in Geochang County and analyzed stomach contents to figure out wild boar diet habit and which crop was preferred. There was seasonal variation in the diet. Plant foods represented up to 93.5% of the diet and were consumed more frequently than animal foods. Invertebrates occurred with high frequency but were underestimated in dry weight because they are rapidly digested. Agricultural crops consumed comprised mainly chestnuts(33%), rice(33%), and apples(24%). Agricultural crops are also a potentially important food resources for wild boar. The frequency of occurrence of earthworms was 50% of diet. Earthworm consumption generally increased in summer, and then decreased in winter. Our results show that wild boar can be considered an omnivore whose diet consists of plant and animal foods. To reduce wild boar agricultural damages, We have to focus on the prevention effort to rice paddy adjacent to chestnut forest and to apple orchard.

  • The regional distribution and relative frequency of somatostatin-immunoreactive cells in the gastrointestinal tract were studied during the postnatal development(1 day old, 1 month old, 6-month-old and adult) of the Korean native goat by immunohistochemical methods. Somatostatin-immunoreactive cells were found in the entire gastrointestinal tract and were most predominant in the fundic gland region except for the pyloric gland region of the 1 day old. The number of these cells was observed to decrease along the gastrointestinal tract and to decrease according to the increase with age in all postnatal stages. In this study, immunoreactive cells revealed the differences of regional distribution and the relative frequency in the gastrointestinal tract during postnatal development. These results suggest that although the functional significance of fetal endocrine cells remains unknown, this was caused by changing of feeding habits and physiological conditions during different ages.

  • The cause of esophageal cancer is still unknown in the majority of patients, but pre-existing diseases of esophagus related to the development of cancer were reported by many authors: e.g. lye stricture, achalasia, Plummer-Vinson syndrome, dietary and alocholic habbits etc. Recently the authors had experienced one case of esophageal cancer with complaint of dysphagia, developing at the site of lye stricture, which was diagnosed by the esophagogram and esophagoscopic biopsy.
