Korean native plants and naturalized plants were analyzed for allelochemicals, and their antimicrobial effects were studied. The difference in soluble solid contents between Korean native plants and naturalized species was not significant, and the Korean native plant, Solanum nigrum showed the highest soluble solid content of 90 mg/ml. The ethanol extract of the Korean native plant, Solanum nigrum showed antifungal activity to Aspergillus phoenicis KCTC 1228, with a clear zone of 18 mm, and spore formation was not observed from the treatment. The naturalized plants Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior and Erigeron canadensis showed inhibition of spore formation and the clear zones were at 24 mm and 22 mm, respectively. The clear zones of Aspergillus phoenicis KCTC 1228 treated with ethanol extrats of Phytolacca americana and Rudbeckia bicolor were 22 mm and 19 mm, respectively, and spore formation was observed from the treatment. The Korean native plant, Solanum nigrum and naturalized plants, Phytolacca americana and Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior showed antimicrobial activity against Bacillus sphiaericus 2362, and Bacillus sphiaericus 2297, Bacillus thuringiensis var. subtilis and Baicillus thuringiensis var. cereus. The antimicrobial activity of Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior showed the largest clear zone of 32 mm against Bacillus thuringiensis var. subtilis. In general, the more soluble the solid contents of the extracts, the greater were the antifungal and antimicrobial activities. The phenolic compounds from the Korean native plant, Solanum nigrum and the naturalized species, Phytolacca americana and Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior were analyzed by high performance liquid chromatography. Three phenolic compounds including hydroquinone were identified in Solanum nigrum. In contrast, five and seven phenolic compounds were identified in Phytolacca americana and Ambrosia artemisiifolia var. elatior, respectively. The antifungal activity against Aspergillus phoenicis KCTC 1228 was found to be due to the coumaric and benzoic compounds.
Antifungal activity on major seedborne diasease of crops was screened by the treatment of the extracts from 50 medicinal plants in vitro and in vivo. The extracts of garlic and taxus, Rheum undulatum, Achiranthes japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis, Oenothera lamar kiana treated with the blotting filter paper and water agar methods inhibited the growth of Pyricularia oryzae, Alternaria sesamicola, Colletotrichum gloeosporioides, and Alternaria brassicicola among the tested plants. Antifungal activities on infected seeds by soaking methods were shown even at the dilution of the extracts by 10 times. The activity was the highest in soaking seeds at $25^{\circ}C$ for 24 hours. The effect of plant extract on seed germination was not significant as compared with untreated seed. However, early growth of seedling was increased by the treatment of extracts. The extract of taxus slightly inhibited the seed germination of radish and chinese cabbage but those of Achirunthes japonica, Glycyrrhiza uralensis and Oenthfera lamarkiana showed severe damage on the seed germination and early growth of seedling.
The ovicidal effect of plant extract mixture (5%cinnamon extract + 10% citronella oil + 30% citrus oil + 10% derris extract + 20% neem extract + 25% penetrating surfactant) against several major insect pests was tested using the spraying method. In the case of stink bugs, eggs tended to die during hatching. When treated with a plant extract mixture (500-times solution), mortality for Halyomorpha halys, Riptortus clavatus, Eurydema dominulus, Trialeurodes vaprarorium, Bemisia tabaci, Spodoptera exigua, and Agrotis ipsilon reached as high as 100%. Therefore, it is believed that industrialization will be feasible in the future.

As an attempt to develop new functional health beverage by using medicinal herb, we investigated the effect of medicinal plant extract (MPE) on mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) and regional cerebral blood flow (rCBF) of rats. The changes of MABP and rCBF were determined by LDF methods. LDF allows for real time, noninvasive, continuous recordings of local CBF. MABP in MPE treated rats showed significant change of MPE 1.0 and 10.0 mg/kg. MPE i.v. administration showed significant increase of rCBF in a dose-dependent manner. Propranolol pretreated MABP showed significant change in the increase of MPE. rCBF of propranolol pretreated rats showed significant change from the i.v. injection concentration of 1.0 and 10.0 mg/kg. The ischemia/reperfusion induced oxidative stress may have contributed to cerebral damage in rats, and the present study provides clear evidence for the beneficial effect of MPE on ischemia induced brain injury. Also, the action mechanism in elevation effect of MPE on rCBF might be concerned with the role of $\beta$-adrenoceptor. The exact component and mechanism remains for the future study.

Candida albicans is one of the most common etiological agents in fungi-associated skin infections. There is an increase of candidiosis especially in the patient of acquired or induced immunodeficiency syndromes or in the event of long-term antibiotics and immuno-suppressor or cytotoxic therapies. To screen out reliable and effective anti-candidiosis agent, in this study, we have evaluated antifungal activity of 298 plant extracts against C. albicans. Based on the results of disc-paper method and determination of minimal inhibitory concentration, fifteen extracts were finally selected as possible sources of anti-candidiosis agent. Especially, six different plant extracts, such as Rubus parvifolius, Euphorbia pekinensis, Coptis chinensis, Eugenia aromaticum, Paeonia lactiflora var. hortensis and Paeonia suffruticosa showed strong antifungal activity against C. albicans, not to S. cerevisiae. These results suggested that medicinal and wild plants could be the potential source of antifungal agent.
The allelochemicals from aqueous extracts of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior leaves and roots were analyzed and 60 compounds in the leaf and 53 compounds in the roots were inspected. The main compounds were acids,. especially phenolic acids and some non-acids. The total amount of compounds in the aqueous extracts of A. artemisiifolia var. elatior leaves was higher than in the roots. The aqueous extracts had much high inhibiting effects on the germination and seedling elongation of selected plants. In both cases, the inhibiting effects were very different with different selected plants and increased significantly as the concentration of aqueous extracts increased. Capsicum annum, Achyranthes japonica, and Oenothera odorta plants were suffered more significant inhibition effects than Raphnus sativus, Cucumis sativus, Brassica camperstris plants. Aqueous extracts from leaves had slightly higher inhibition effects than the aqueous extracts from the roots.
Thirty-five edible plants were tested against oral bacteria (Streptococcus mutans, Lactobacillus casei, Staphylococcus epidermidis, Klebsiella pneumonia). The edible plants were extracted using 70% ethanol as a solvent. Among the thirty-five edible plants, hibiscus (Hibiscus sabdariffa) extract was selected as an effective antibacterial source because it showed the lowest minimum inhibitory concentration. The antimicrobial substances of hibiscus extract were very stable at acidic condition and at wide range of temperature 4-75 ℃. The total polyphenol and flavonoid contents of hibiscus extract were 130.5 and 25.7 mg/g, respectively. Also hibiscus extract showed a high degree of antioxidant activity.
To gather the basic data for increasing the utilization of Isatis tinctoria, we examined the effects of both antioxidative enzyme activity and antimicrobial activity from the extract of Isatis tinctoria. Ascorbate Peroxidase activities reveal that there is an decrease in order; ethanol extract from its stem (1601.7 Unit/mg protein), methanol extract from its leaf (1133.7 Unit/mg protein) and distilled water extract from its leaf (524.3 Unit/mg protein). Catalase activities reveal that there is an decrease in order; ethanol extract from its flower petal (177.1 Unit/mg protein), methanol extract from its leaf (120.8 Unit/mg protein) and distilled water extract from its flower petal (55.4 Unit/mg protein). Peroxidase activities reveal that there is an decrease in order; ethanol extract from its flower petal (27.1 Unit/mg protein), methanol extract from its flower petal (14.6 Unit/mg protein) and distilled water extract from its stem (10.4 Unit/mg protein). Superoxide dismutase activities reveal that there is an increase in order; distilled water extract from its root (90.8%), methanol extract from its flower petal (80.1%) and ethanol extract from its root (75.5%). Its flower extract showed a antimicrobial activity only against Vibrio parahaemolyticus, its root extract had only against Staphylococcus aureus, and its stem extract had against Bacillus subtilis, Escherichia coli and Staphylococcus aureus, regardless of solvents. Especially, distilled water extract from its leaf showed a high antimicrobial activity against both Bacillus subtilis and Escherichia coli and inhibition diameters against those were 30.0 and 24.0 mm, respectively.
