To assess the influence of environmental factors on the phytoplankton community structure and total phytoplankton biomass during four seasons in 2014, we investigated the abiotic and biotic factors at 25 stations in the Busan coastal region. The phytoplankton community and total phytoplankton biomass were strongly dependent on the discharge from the Nakdong River, and the high density of phytoplankton was related with the introduction of the Tsushima Warm Current (TWC), particularly in the thermohaline fronts of the fall season. The relationship between the salinity and nutrient (Dissolved inorganic nitrogen=DIN: R2=0.72, p<0.001 and Dissolved inorganic silicon=DSi: R2=0.78, p<0.001) highly correlated with the river discharge, implying that those nutrients have played a crucial role in the growth of diatom and cryptophyta. The total phytoplankton biomass was highest in the summer followed by autumn, spring, and winter. Diatom and cryptophyta species were dominant species during the four seasons. Additionally, there were strong positive correlations between Chlorophyll a and total phytoplankton biomass (R2=0.84, p<0.001), cryptophyta (R2=0.76, p<0.001) and diatom (R2=0.50, p<0.001), respectively. In particular, we found that there were significant differences in the nutrients, phytoplankton community compositions, and total phytoplankton biomass between the inner and the outer coastal region of Busan, depending on the amount of river discharge from the Nakdong River, particularly during rainy seasons. Therefore, the seasonal change of TWC and river discharge from the Nakdong River serve an important role in determining phytoplankton population dynamics in the Busan coastal region.

We studied spatial and temporal distributions of the phytoplankton and their relationships to physico-chemical environmental factors in the western Jinhae Bay, Korea from November 2003 to August 2004. In most cases, physico-chemical environmental factors showed homogeneous distribution. The phytoplankton communities were composed of mainly diatoms and dinoflagellates, and their standing crops ranged from $16{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}\;to\;5,845{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$ (with a mean value of $555{\times}10^3\;cells\;l^{-1}$). The bloom of phytoplankton was observed in Gohyun Port in the summer. Seasonal variation of phytoplankton standing crops was higher in winter and summer than in spring and autumn. The dominant species were Skeletonema costatum, Akashiwo sanguinea, Pseudo-nitzschia pungens, Dactyliosolen sp., Leptocylindrus danicus, cryptomonads and etc. Especially, S. costatum was predominant in the summer and A. sanguinea (spring and autumn), Pseudo-nitzschia sp. (summer), Guinardia striata (spring), unidentified flagellates (summer) and cryptomonads (spring) appeared to be an opportunistic species. Concentrations of Chl a ranged from $0.6{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}\;to\;16.7{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}$ (with a mean value of $3.4{\mu}g{\cdot}l^{-1}$). The results of the canonical correspondence analysis implies the study area was grouped into the 2 water masses (inner and outer waters of Gohyun Port) and inner waters had higher abundance and Chl a concentration than outer waters. Also, phytoplankton sanding crops were related with temperature, DO and nutrients ($SiO^2$, TN, TP and etc.) in inner waters. Inner water-mass of Gohyun Port expanded between Gacho Is. and Chilchon Is. during the winter.

This study conducted a seasonal survey to analyze the spatio-temporal variations of marine environments and phytoplankton community in Gochang Coastal Waters (GCW) from August 2016 to April 2017. In the results, the water temperature ranged from 2.1℃ to 34.5℃, showing a large seasonal variation, but the salinity changed from 31.14 psu to 32.64 psu. Therefore, the seasonal variations of water types in GCW were mainly determined by water temperature. The phytoplankton community consisted of 53 genera and 86 species, showing a relatively simple distribution. The phytoplankton cell density ranged from 2.2 to 689.2 cells mL-1, with an average of 577.2 cells mL-1, which was low in autumn and high in winter. The seasonal succession of phytoplankton dominant species was mainly diatoms during the whole year, Leptocylindrus danicus, Chaetoceros curvisetus, Skeletonema costatum-ls in summer, Paralia sulcata, Eucampia zodiacus in autumn, S. costatum-ls, Thalassiosira nordenskioeldii in winter, and S. costatum-ls, Asterionella glacialis in spring. In other words, the phytoplankton community showed high diversity in GCW throughout the year. According to the PCA, GCW were easily heated and cooled by radiant energy at lower depth, and the seasonal distributions of phytoplankton were determined by the supply of nutrients by re-fuelling of surface sediments due to the seawater mixing such as tidal mixing.
In order to understand the relationship between succession of phytoplankton community structure and inorganic nutrients and particulate organic matters, a one station in Kyungan stream in Korea during the dry season was chosen. Water samplings were carried out once a week from 18 August to 13 November 1993. The DIN concentration distributed always abundantly, however, phosphate and silicate gradually reduced during the period. Phytoplankton community had a peak chlorophyll a concentration of $90.6\;{\mu}g/l$ in late summer (21 August 1993) and a second peak of $29.7\;{\mu}g/l$ in autumn (2 October 1993). After then late autumn was characterined by relatively low chlorophyll a concentration of $15{\sim}16\;{\mu}g/l$. Seasonal fluctuation of chlorophyll a concentrations were correlated with measured POC and PON concentrations: phytoplankton blooming may be a major factor controlling POC and PON concentrations in this ecosystem. Phosphate plays an most important role as a limiting factor of phytoplankton growth. However, when Si/P ratio low, silicate may be a more critical limiting factor than phosphate. Shifts of P-limitation to Si- limitation the succession of dominant phytoplankton can in duce: diatom to cyanobacteria such as Anabaena, Microcystis and Oscillatoria.
Between May 2006 and November 2009, we investigated the relationship between fluctuations in environmental factors and phytoplankton communities in Saemangeum Artificial Lake, South Korea. Nutrient concentrations in the lake increased because of the inflow of water from Mankyung and Dongjin Rivers during the summer rainy season; in particular, high concentrations were detected at an inner zone close to the estuaries. During the summer rainy season, salinity at the inner zone reduced more rapidly than that at the other zones, and it was similar to the changes in nutrient concentrations. Variations in phytoplankton communities were caused by fluctuations in environmental factors: the abundance of phytoplankton at the inner zone was higher than that at the other zones. Diatoms were the dominant species in the phytoplankton communities. A small centric diatom, Skeletonema costatum like species, was predominant, with a mean abundance of 19.5% in Saemangeum lake. Because of accelerated eutrophication in the lake, phytoplankton abundance increased continuously and the total number of species present in the community decreased. In particular, some dinoflagellates could intermittently cause red tides during low temperature and salinity conditions (at the inner zone). In 2006~2007, a red tide-forming dinoflagellate, Prorocentrum minimum, was the predominant species, while Heterocapsa triquetra, Karlodinium veneficum, and Heterocapsa rotundata were the newly recorded species in late 2008 to early 2009. Therefore, the dynamics of phytoplankton communities under the perennially eutrophic conditions in Saemangeum lake appear to be primarily affected by changes in water temperature and salinity. In particular, the growth of harmful algae may have been accelerated by the low salinity and temperature conditions during the spring season at the inner zone.
Dynamics of phytoplankton community were monthly examined at two sites in Lake Juam from January to December 2003. One site is located near the Dam, an intake tower, where obtain a drinking water resource, the other site is located in the shallow region, Mundeok-bridge, the upstream or effluent part of lake. During the study, there made little the differences in physicochemical factors between two sites, but numbers of species and standing crops of phytoplankton differ remarkably. Totally, 41% of green algae and 35.8% of diatoms were comprised of total phytoplankton species, while 46.3% of dinoflagellates and 27.6% of cyanobacteria contributed in total standing crops of Phytoplankton community. Cyanobacterium Microcystis aeruginora and diatom Fragilaria crotonensis dominated the Dam site during a warm season, while dinoflagellates Peridinium bipes and Asterionella formosa were at the shallow region during a cold season, respectively. According to the CCA analysis, dissolved oxygen, chemical oxygen demand and total phosphate strongly affected the growth of P. bipes with low water temperature. In addition, the increment of total nitrogen and water temperature affected biomass of a cyanobacterium M. aeruginosa. Collectively, it may suggest that the majority of annual primary production of Lake Juam is covered by two dominant species Peridinium bipes in cold season and Microcystis aeruginosa in warm season.

Phytoplankton is one of the important primary producers providing organic matter through photosynthesis in aquatic environments. In order to determine a temporal and spatial variation in primary productivity after weir construction in the Nakdong River, we investigated carbon uptake rates using in-situ $^{13}C$ labeling experiments and identified algal communities contributing to primary productivity using HPLC-CHEMTAX analysis from October to December, 2017. The primary productivity gradually decreased from fall to early winter season ($249{\sim}933mgC\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in October, $64{\sim}536mgC\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in November and $60{\sim}274mgC\;m^{-2}d^{-1}$ in December, respectively). This is attributed to the temporally declining light intensity and the decreasing biomass and physiological activity of phytoplankton in winter. The contribution of diatoms to the phytoplankton community in the Nakdong River was approximately 63% at all the sampling sites and seasons, while the contribution of cryptophytes increased from 9% in October to 32% in November and December. The temporal changes in the primary productivity and the dominant phytoplankton species in the mid and downstream weirs of the Nakdong River was investigated for the first time, after construction of the weirs, and major environmental factors controlling the temporal variation in primary productivity and phytoplankton communities were identified in this study. We suggest that seasonal field investigations will provide further information on the major environmental factors which affect the annual variation of primary productivity and phytoplankton communities.
Based on the result that biological control agent (BCA) increased the dissolved microcystin-LR in a field experiment to control the cyanobacterial bloom (Kim etal., 2005), a laboratory experiment was used to evaluate the effects of dissolved microcystin-LR (MCLR) with different concentrations on abundance, dominance, diversity of phytoplankton community, concentration of chlorophyll a and microcystin concentration in replicated microcosms. The treatments in this laboratory experiment comprised different concentrations of T1 (natural MCLR concentration), T10 (ten times to natural MCLR concentration), and T100 (one hundred times to natural MCLR concentration). MCLR treatment of exclusively Stephanodiscus hantzschii-dominated community in Chonho bridge hardly changed in algal species, but abundance. In Kildong pond, Aulacoseira and Dinobryonrich community was replaced by green algae Scenedesmus-rich community especially in T100 experiment. However, in Yangsoori-Ryukgakji Pond having the highest concentration of initial MCLR, Microcystis aeruginosa was decreased in abundance. Therefore, the treatment of BCA to control M. aeruginosa severely changed the Phytoplankton community in term of algal species, abundance (chlorophyll a) and dissolved microcystin-LR via a high release of MCLR.

The nitrogen isotope value in both ammonium and nitrate ion were determined at 9 stations during both June and August 2016, in order to understand the origin of DIN at the Han river. ${\delta}^{15}N-NO_3$ and ${\delta}^{15}N-NH_4$ values in 8 stations (CP, SB, MHC, P4, SJ, SBC, P2, SC) were no significant variation. However ${\delta}^{15}N-NO_3$ and ${\delta}^{15}N-NH_4$ values in KK (Kyeongan stream) showed significant different in comparison with 8 stations, with an apparent increase of nitrogen isotope values. These results indicate that antropogenic nitrogen source influence on KK station. Also the ${\delta}^{13}C$ and ${\delta}^{15}N$ isotope ratio of phytoplankton (Diatom and Cyanobacteria) in KK (Kyeongan stream) showed heavier values, compared to other study stations. These results indicate that nitrogen isotope value in phytoplankton effects by different nitrogen source in study sites. These results suggest that the analysis of stable isotope ratios is a simple but useful tool for the identification of dissolved inorganic nitrogen origin in aquatic environments.
A series of observations of phytoplankton were made at seven station with two control stations in Inchon Dock to clarify the quantity, quality and standing crop of phytoplankton from Oct. to Nov., 1976. Thirty seven species of phytoplankton, representing 18 genera, 36 species, 1 forma were taken in this research. Chaetoceros decipiens, Rhizosolenia delicatula, Hemiaulus sinensis, Chaetoceros affinis and Skeletonema costatum were the dominant species in this area during two moths. By the ecological division, the neritic species occupied 86.5% of total phytoplankton composition. Standing crop of phytoplankton represented much variation: ranging from 263 to 1, 614, 832 cells/l. The maximum happened at station 1 on November.
