  • 대전시 유성구 한국원자력연구소 부근 지역의 심부 단열대 확인을 위해 BHTV 검층, 일정구간별 정압 주입시험을 실시하였다. BHTV 조사 결과 A Zone(100m~120m)과 B Zone(250m~280m)이 연결되었다고 판단되며, 일정구간별 정압주입시험을 통해 B Zone(250m~280m)과 C Zone(400~420m)의 연결성을 추측할 수 있었다.

  • Recently, steel casing became an interesting issue when applying controlled-source electromagnetic (EM) method to various fields because effects of steel casing on EM responses are not negligible. This study employed an approach that approximates the steel casing as a series of electric dipole sources in order to develop the numerical algorithm for the efficient simulation of EM responses in the presence of steel casing. After verifying the validity of the developed algorithm, we analyze effects of steel casing on EM responses with the synthetic model simulating geothermal reservoir environment. The analysis showed that the effects of steel casing on EM responses are localized near the casing and increase as the transmitter becomes close to the casing. In addition, through the analysis on the EM responses by the injection of clean water, we confirm that the effects of casing are negligible when interpreting the after-injection data acquired using the transmitter located far enough from the casing. Considering the difference in EM responses between before and after injection in inversion, the effects of the casing can be neglected although after-injection data shows considerable difference due to the close distance between the transmitter and casing. To investigate this kind steel casing effect, the precise analysis on EM responses should be preceded. The algorithm introduced in this study will contribute to the reliable calculations of EM responses distorted by the conductive steel casing.

  • Underground urbanization appears to be a promising solution in response to the shortage of construction sites in the above-ground space. In this context, an accurate evaluation of a construction site ensures the long-term performance of geosystems. This study characterizes potential sites for complex plants built in underground space using geophysical methods (i.e., seismic refraction exploration and electrical resistivity survey) and in situ tests (i.e., standard penetration tests (SPTs) and downhole tests). SPTs are conducted in nine boreholes BH-1-BH-9 to estimate the groundwater level and vertical distribution of geological structures. The seismic refraction method enables us to obtain the elastic wave velocity and thickness of each soil layer for each cross-sectional area. An electrical resistivity survey conducted using the dipole array method provides the electrical resistivity profiles of the cross-sectional area. Data obtained using geophysical techniques are used to assess the classification of the soil layer and bedrock, particularly the fracture zone. This study suggests that geotechnical information using in situ tests and geophysical methods are useful references to design an underground complex plant construction.

  • To characterize the geological features in the study area for high-level radioactive waste disposal research, KAERI (Korea Atomic Energy Research Institute) has been performing several geological investigations such as geophysical surveys and borehole drillings since 1997. Especially, the KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel) constructed to understand the deep geological environments in 2006. Recently, the deep boreholes, which have 500 m depth inside the left research module of the KURT and 1,000 m depth outside the KURT, were drilled to confirm and validate the results from a geological model. The objective of this research was to investigate hydrogeological conditions using a 3-D geological model around the KURT. The geological analysis from the surface and borehole investigations determined four important geologicla elements including subsurface weathered zone, low-angled fractures zone, fracture zones and bedrock for the geological model. In addition, the geometries of these elements were also calculated for the three-dimensional model. The results from 3-D geological model in this study will be beneficial to understand hydrogeological environment in the study area as an important part of high-level radioactive waste disposal technology.

  • In the process of identifying the earth's crust structures to accurately locate the seismic epicenter, man-made earthquakes need to be generated. Such a large-scale ground vibration can be generated by a deep borehole blasting, but it can also accompany some environmental impacts on the surroundings. In this respect, a borehole test blasting was carried out to determine the maximum charge weight that could be used without affecting the various structures around the blast site. Total 400kg of gelatine-type dynamites was used in the test blast. As a result, a prediction equation for ground vibrations was derived from the measured data. With the allowable level of 3.0 mm/s for residential structures, the maximum charge weight was determined to be 677kg if military structures near the site were considered. But if the military structures were not considered, it was found that up to 2100kg of explosives could be used without affecting old houses in the nearby village.

  • Sonic wave dispersion characteristics are one of the most important targets of study, particularly in estimating shear wave velocity from borehole sonic logging. We have tested dispersion characteristics using monopole and dipole sources. Theoretical dispersion curves were computed for tool-absent and tool-included models having the same physical properties but different diameters (including ${\Phi}520mm$, ${\Phi}150mm$, and ${\Phi}76mm$). Comparisons were made between boreholes of different sizes and between tool-absent and tool-included models. Between the tool-included and the tool-absent boreholes, a close similarity in dispersion curve shape was revealed for the monopole source, and a significant difference was shown for the dipole source. However, for the cut-off frequency, particularly in the engineering boreholes (${\Phi}76mm$ and ${\Phi}50mm$), a significant difference was observed for signals from the monopole source, but approximately the same cut-off frequencies were found with the dipole source. This indicates the need of careful choice of source frequency in monopole-source sonic logging, particularly in an engineering borehole. The results of numerical experiments show that cut-off frequency is exponentially proportional to the inverse of borehole radius, irrespective of the mode type and the presence of a tool, and that the cut-off frequencies for each borehole environment could be expressed as an exponential function, rather than the inversely proportional relationship between the cut-off frequency and the borehole radius that was previously generally recognised. From the direct comparison of dispersion curves, the effects on the dispersion characteristics of borehole size and the presence of the tool can be revealed more clearly than in previous studies, which presented the dispersion curve and/or characteristics for each borehole environment separately.

  • Core samples from the B, E, F, H wells in the Tertiary Pohang Basin were analysed for total organic carbon (TOC) content and subject to Rock-Eval pyrolysis in order to assess petroleum geochemical characteristics of organic matter. Following geochemical screening, we selected samples from each well for the study of bitumen and kerogens such as optical observation, infra-red spectroscopy and biomarker analyses. Sediments of the Tertiary Yonil Group contain total organic carbon ranging from $0.55{\%} to 3.74{\%}$ with S1+S2 values higher than 2mgHC/g Rock in B, E and F wells, which indicates fair hydrocarbon generation potential. Most organic matter in the B, E, F wells is compared to type II based on the Rock-Eval pyrolysis, infra-red spectroscopy and optical observation. However, organic matter in the H well is compared to type III because the well is located at the margin of the basin where the preservation of terrestrial material is dominant. Geochemical analyses show that organic matter in the Yonil Group is thermally immature although thermal maturity slightly increases with depth. Maturity levels of the extracted kerogens are similar to those of bulk samples ($Tmax<435^{\circ}C$. Petroleum geochemical charateristics of the sediments in the Tertairy Yonil Group is fair in terms of the organic richness and hydrocarbon genetic potential, but organic matter is thermally immature due to the shallow burial depth. Optical observation of the kerogens and biomarker analysis show that organic matter in the Yonil Group is both marine and terrestrial origin, although it was deposited in marine environment. Pristane/phytane ratio suggests rather anoxic depositional environment. Transitional characteristics of organic matter indicate that the marine Yonil Group was deposited near the terrestrial environments. Input of terrestrial organic matter is more prevalent in the samples recovered from the lowermost horizon in the wells due to the terrestrial environment at the time of basin formation.
