  • The reverse of reinforcement technique was used in treating rumination of a 12-year old (estimated age) mentally retarded child in a residential setting. The subject's rumination pattern was first to vomit the food onto the floor and then to eat it back in several attempts. Consequently, the way to reverse the contingency of rumination in this child was to take away the discharge whenever rumination occurred. An ABAB single subject design was adopted to evaluate the treatment effect. In baseline 1 the frequency of his rumination for 2.5 hours after eating was an average of 46(range= 30-62), while decreased to 6.7 in treatment condition 1. However, when the discharge was not taken away in baseline 2, his rumination increased to 34 times and then decreased to zero to 1 time when the reverse of reinforcement was reinstituted in treatment condition 2. The results clearly indicate that the reverse of reinforcement which was implemented in the form of removing the discharge from the floor was successful. It was reported that the treatment effect has been maintained over 10 months post treatment.

  • The purpose of this study was to investigate ego-resilience and social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care. The study also investigated the protective factors and the risk factors on ego-resilience and social adaptability and their relationship. The subjects in this study were 140 children and adolescents in institutional care. The research data were analyzed using Frequency, Pearson's Correlation, Stepwise Multiple Regression Analysis and T-Test in SPSS WIN 10.0 program. The major findings were as follows. First, ego-resilience of the children and adolescents in institutional care was related to locus of control, depression and anxiety and unsatisfaction of institutional care. Result of stepwise multiple regression analysis showed that depression and anxiety and locus of control in the order had significant effects on ego-resilience. Second, social adaptability of the children and adolescents in institutional care was related to social support and parent-child bond. Unsatisfaction of institutional care and social support in the order had significant effects on social adaptability by stepwise multiple regression analysis. Third, the children and adolescents who had higher level of ego-resilience reported better social adaptability. The overall research results revealed that the risk factors such as unsatisfaction of institutional care and depression and anxiety than the protective factors had more significant effects on ego-resilience and social adaptability of children and adolescents in institutional care. This finding suggested that elimination of risk factors rather than development of protective factors was a more important task for the welfare of children and adolescents in institutional care.

  • In this study, we sought to find out the effect of different emotional interior images of the community facilities in an apartment complex on a youth brain wave by analyzing an Electroencephalograph (EEG). Based on the frequency of usage, we selected learning facilities, cultural facilities, and sport facilities. For brain stimulation, the visual stimulants with three different emotional words, cheerful, gentle, and elegant, were used based on I.R.I image scale. Overall, total nine different emotional images were used. Based on our findings, we conclude that: first, in order to improve learning concentration of the youth, a learning facility for the youth needs to be designed by skillfully combining the soft and comfortable colors from the gentle image and the murky and dark colors from the elegant image. Second, when designing a cultural facility, it is preferable to consider the elegant image for a calm and comfortable space. Third, a sport facility design needs to preclude dark colors and apply light colors to create a dynamic and lively space. Furthermore, we found out that the youth has established static images of each functionally different facility through their experience and learning. Therefore, it is imperative to plan community facilities in an apartment complex in a way to connect the space function with the emotional characteristics of the youth in order to support and encourage energetic activities and learning of the community youth.

The purpose of this study is to carefully understand characteristics and experiences of only a few academically talented children in residential care and to find out the practical suggestion to support the academic performance of children in residential care. For this purpose, we had interviewed eight children in depth and analyzed the data using a qualitative case study method. As a result, we found a total of 21 subcategories and 5 categories. The categories included that 'always being faithful despite being not fast', 'believing myself when I face limitations', 'conflict in high support and high expectation', 'sometimes refusing to support on me, but I am leaning on my mind', 'relieving anxiety by studying'. In conclusion, we found that the central theme of 'running to change prejudice into hope' were found through the cases with excellent academic achievement. Based on the results, we suggested the guidelines to consider when developing and providing the academic support services for children in residential care.
