A Study on the Relationship between the Self-Leadership and the Level of Career Maturity of the Fostered Adolescents at Youth Shelter : Mediating effect of Career Decision Self-Efficacy (시설보호 청소년의 셀프리더십과 진로성숙도의 관계: 진로결정 자기효능감의 매개효과를 중심으로)

  • The study was carried out by surveying 500 fostered teenagers at youth shelters in the Capital area via onsite visit over about three weeks from April 17 to May 10, 2018; 487 samples out of 500 questioned subjects were used for the final analysis. The results of this study are as follows. First, the career decision self-efficacy was verified to have a partial mediating effect between all of self-leadership variables and the career maturity of the fostered adolescents at youth shelters. Second, the career decision self-efficacy was verified to have a partial mediating effect between the action-oriented strategy, which is one of the self-leadership variables, and the career maturity of the fostered adolescents at youth shelters. Third, the career decision self-efficacy was verified to have a partial mediating effect between the natural compensation strategy, which is one of the self-leadership variables, and the career maturity of the fostered adolescents at youth shelters. Fourth, the career decision self-efficacy was verified to have a full mediating effect between the constructive thinking strategy, which is one of the self-leadership variables, and the career maturity of the fostered adolescents at youth shelters.

THE CLASSIFICATION OF ADOLESCENTS IN RUNAWAY SHELTERS BY THE EVALUATION OF THEIR PSYCHOPATHOLOGY (보호시설 가출청소년의 정신병리에 대한 평가와 분류)

  • Object:This study was carried out to classify adolescents in runaway shelters by evaluating their psychopathology. And the ultimate purpose is to offer basic data for preventing adolescents‘ runaway and for diversifying runaway shelters suitable for the problem of individual adolescent. Method:128 adolescents who stay in the runaway shelters were asked to complete self-report qeustionnaires including basic sociodemographic data, Child Behavior Check List(CBCL), Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory(MMPI), and Symptom Check List-90-Revised(SCL-90-R). Korean Wechsler Adult Intelligence Scale(K-WAIS)[or Korean Educational Developmental Institute-Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children(KEDI-WISC)] and Bender-Gestalt test(BGT) were also done by clinical psychologists. Results:The most common age of the subjects were 15-year-old, and they dropped out their schools in the middle school most commonly. Mostly they were from middle class family and their parents' educational level were high school graduates. The first runaway episode was most common in the middleschool period, and their runaways were repeated. The most common frequency of runaways were more than 10 times. About 10% of them abused drugs and about 80% of them abused alcohol. One third of them had experiences of illegal problems and 10% of them engaged in sexual activity for money. 95 adolescents(83%) in CBCL, 42 adolescents(36%) in SCL-90-R, and 70 adolescents(69.3%) in MMPI showed clinical significance. In intelligence test, 22 adolescents(22%) were mentally retarded. In BGT, 35 adolescents(39.4%) manifested brain dysfunction signs. Conclusion:Runaway adolescents in the shelters have variable and severe psychopathology. Their psychopathology is classified as follows;The behavior disorder group, the mood disorder group with anxiety/depression, the somatic disorder group with somatic symptoms, and the psychosis group with possibility of severe psychopathology. Therefore it is very important to evaluate psychiatric problems of runaway adolescents, and specific therapeutic interventions according to their problems are required.

The relationship between social capital of adolescents in out-of-home care and their self-reliance: Focusing on the mediating effects of school adjustment (가정외보호청소년의 사회적자본이 학교적응을 매개로 자립의지에 미치는 영향)

  • The objective of this study was to examine the mediating effects of school adjustment on the relationship between social capital and self-reliance of adolescents in out-of-home care(institutional care, foster care, and group homes). For this study, a total of 358 middle and high school students(13 to 19 years) were recruited among adolescents in care nationwide. Collected data were analyzed by using the structural equation modeling analysis. A bootstrapping method was utilized to examine the mediating effects. The results showed that social capital of the adolescents in out-of-home care was not directly related to self-reliance. However, complete mediation was found through school adjustment in the relationship between social capital and self-reliance. This indicates that social capital of the adolescents in care was significantly related to self-reliance only through school adjustment. Based on the results, policy and practice implications for increasing the levels of social capital, school adjustment, and self-reliance of adolescents in care were discussed.

A Case Study of Therapeutic Song Making to Enhance the Self-identity of Adolescents in Residential Treatment Facility (시설보호청소년의 자아정체감 증진을 위한 치료적 노래만들기 사례)

  • This is a case study of therapeutic song making activities aimed at improving the self-identity of adolescents in residential treatment facility. The participants were three male teenagers (16 to 18 years of age). The song making intervention was conducted individually with the participants once a week over 13 weeks, and each session lasted 60 minutes. The participants took the lead in making songs by discussing on the self-image and his/her role in the relationship and using musical elements to reflect his/her perception. For analysis, an evaluation method was used to analyze the pre- and post-test results for each sub-domain of the self-identity scale, and changes in the verbal and musical responses during each session. Two of the participants demonstrated higher post-test results compared to their pre-test performance, and their highest post-test scores were for the subdomains of intimacy and initiative respectively. In terms of verbal and musical responses per session, all three participants improved their subjectivity through the self-exploration process, which contributed to the establishment of a more positive self-image. This study suggests that facility youth engaging in making creative songs can positively change their perception of their present and future selves and have a positive effect on their sense of identity.

The Moderating Effects of Self-Esteem on the Link between Social Support and Career Decision-Making Level of Youth in Residential Care (시설보호청소년의 사회적 지지와 진로결정수준과의 관계에 대한 자아존중감의 조절효과 검증)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine the moderating effect of self esteem on the link between social support(e.g. from family, friends and significant others) and career decision-making level of youth in residential care. Data for this study were collected from 14 nationwide institutions between June 10th to June 20th, 2008. Selfreporting surveys were employed to gather information from 412 sources within these institutions. Collected data were analyzed by SPSS program(12.0). The results were as follows: Stepwise multiple regression showed that self-esteem could be used to predict career decision-making level($\beta$ = -.262, p < .001). Furthermore, self-esteem had a moderating effect on the relationship between social support and career decision-making level($\beta$ = -.749, p < .001). Specifically, self-esteem and the scale of social support from family, friedns or significant others had a moderating effect on career decision-making level($\beta$ = - .118, p < .001). The implication of these findings on career decision-making intervention of youth in residential care and future research priorities are discussed.

Running to Change Prejudice into Hope - A Qualitative Case Study on Academically talented Children in Residential Care - (편견을 희망으로 바꾸는 달리기 - 학업성취 우수 시설보호아동에 관한 질적 사례연구 -)

  • We usually expect that children in residential care are not able to have excellent academic achievement, even though their school achievement in adolescence is crucial as a part of whole lifespan development. The purpose of this study is to carefully understand characteristics and experiences of only a few academically talented children in residential care and to find out the practical suggestion to support the academic performance of children in residential care. For this purpose, we had interviewed eight children in depth and analyzed the data using a qualitative case study method. As a result, we found a total of 21 subcategories and 5 categories. The categories included that 'always being faithful despite being not fast', 'believing myself when I face limitations', 'conflict in high support and high expectation', 'sometimes refusing to support on me, but I am leaning on my mind', 'relieving anxiety by studying'. In conclusion, we found that the central theme of 'running to change prejudice into hope' were found through the cases with excellent academic achievement. Based on the results, we suggested the guidelines to consider when developing and providing the academic support services for children in residential care.

Life experience of NEET youth after discharge from out-of-home-care (가정외보호 퇴소청소년의 무업자 생활 경험)

  • The purpose of this study is to understand the life experience of youth who discharged from out-of-home-care and lived as the unemployed NEET(Not in Education, Employment or Training) youth not established in life. For this study, we collected in-depth interviews with five youth in career moratorium or early discharge from out-of-home care. The results of the study were as follows: we divided into six themes such as "I cannot lean on family of origin", "unstable life", "strayed by wandering and prejudice", "I need someone to rely on", "belated regrets", and "constantly dreaming of resurgence"; and the six themes were analyzed separately in the sub-categories. As a result, we found out that the youth in career moratorium lived a life of regret and recovery in the unstable life journey. Based upon the results, we suggested social welfare practice and policy implications in order to systematically support the NEET youth after discharge from out-of-home-care.

A Study on the Protection Methods for Students from Inappropriate Internet Sites (불건전(不健全)한 인터넷 자원(資源)으로부터의 청소년(靑少年) 보호방안(保護方案)에 관한 연구(硏究))

  • With the advent of internet, the modern society is enjoying the benefits of the information age. As one of undesirable side effects of utilization of internet, however, it is often mentioned that young students are helplessly exposed to inappropriate and unqualified information. Therefore, in this paper, we will clarify the nature of inappropriate information to the younger generation and will argue for the needs of protecting the youth from inappropriate information. Especially the merits and limits of often motioned five different protective and regulatory measures are presented and analyzed, those are, establishment of acceptable use policy, active utilization of supervisory organization, promotion of Internet rating system, installation of filtering software, and legal and regulatory protection. As a fundamental means of resolving the problems, however, enforcement of systematic information literacy education, promotion of active utilization of sound information, development of search engines for the youth, design of diverse filtering softwares which can be selected by users, and increased attention by parents and teachers are suggested.

  • 국가적 차원에서 저소득 청소년을 위한 교육프로그램이 많은 아동보호센터 및 지역센터를 중심으로 시행되고 있지만 그 취지와 목적에 부합하는 방과 후 교육이 제공되고 있는지 그 효과성에 대해서는 주목하지 않아왔다. 본 연구는 저소득 청소년을 위한 방과 후 교육의 질 관리에 대한 필요성이 대두되고 있는 시점에서 영재교육의 일환으로 여겨져 왔던 창의성 교육을 조명하였다. 저소득층 청소년의 창의력 인성을 양성하기 위한 교육용 게임 프로그래밍 수업의 효과성에 대해 조사하였다. A시 5곳의 아동보호시설에서 운영되고 있는 게임프로그래밍 수업에 참여하고 있는 학생과 참여하지 않는 학생을 대상으로 창의적 인성검사를 실시하여 비교 분석하였다. 창의적 인성검사는 크게 자기확신(Self Confidence), 호기심(Curiosity), 인내(Patience), 개방성(Openess), 모험심(Adventure)으로 구분하여 t검증을 통해 유의한가를 분석하였다. 다섯 가지 영역의 평균은 실험집단이 높았으나, 이 중 '인내' 영역이 두드러진 차이를 보였고, 이로 인해 게임프로그래밍 수업을 받은 학생들이 수업을 받지 않은 학생들에 비해 과제 수행에 있어 인내와 끈기를 가지고 도전하는 경향을 보였다. 그러나 자기 확신, 호기심, 개방성, 모험심 네 가지 영역에 대해서는 두드러지는 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 이에 대한 개선책으로 학생들에게 이 네 가지 영역을 균형적으로 길러주기 위하여 체계적으로 강사진의 교수법 연수, 교육과정의 개선, 학생 동기 유발, 학생 독려 및 관리 등 다양한 방법을 통해 수업의 질을 개선시켜 학생들의 창의적 인성 양성에 도움을 줄 수 있을 것으로 기대된다.

The Effects of Parenting Attitudes on the Developmental Trajectories in School Adjustment of Adolescents in Out-of-Home Care (주양육자의 양육태도가 가정외보호 청소년의 학교적응 발달궤적에 미치는 영향)

  • The purpose of this study was to examine whether parenting attitudes would have an effect on the developmental trajectories of school adjustment for adolescents in out-of-home care. Additionally, we hypothesized that this model would be different between boys and girls. In this study, we analyzed three waves of data collected from 341 adolescents living in residential facilities, group homes or foster homes by using cluster sampling methods. Growth-curve longitudinal analysis was conducted, and the results indicated that levels of school adjustment had increased from the 1st through the 3rd grade of middle school. Positive parenting attitudes had a positive impact on initial school adjustment and rate of change, whereas negative parenting attitudes had a negative impact only on the initial school adjustment. Second, multi-group analysis revealed that there were group differences between boys and girls in their initial school adjustment by positive parenting attitudes. Based on these results, this study discussed further suggestions to increase school adjustments for adolescents in out-of-home care.
