  • The entry of an aging society require a safety of senior citizens against emergency. However, a home and a residence of senior citizens should not consider a characteristic of safety and the unfortunate accidents could happen in the house or the residence. Especially if the elders live alone then they have a help function using a call button in a bathroom or a closed area. But, a sliding or an overbalance in a bathroom or a closed area of a home may happen suddenly how can require a help in real time. That is a very serious accident to senior citizens. In this paper, we developed the context-aware system using the various sensors for collecting the data which is an activities of daily living of elders and we designed the recognition method using case-based reasoning for detecting the anomaly and the emergency context in the bathroom or the closed area in house. After that, if the anomaly or the emergency are detected then it call to a family or a relative or an administration in real-time.

  • The purpose of this study is to investigate the characteristics of the elderly based on the types of Kyungrodang participation and explores ways toward development of Kyungrodang. A national sample data, collected by the Korean Institute for the Health and Social Welfare in 2004 is analyzed by employing Chi-Square test of independence, ANOVA, and multiple logistic regression(n=3,005). A significant difference is noted in age, area, and socioeconomic status among the elderly based on the types of Kyungrodang participation. The results show that those elderly living in rural areas with older and lower socioeconomic status are more likely to participate at Kyungrodang, whereas, elderly living in urban areas with younger and higher socioeconomic status are less likely to participate at Kyungrodang and discontinue to use the services. Although there is a difference between the gender, the most significant reason for not using and discontinuing Kyungrodang is because the elderly can not get along with the other participants. In other words, the major problem that needs to be solved is to socializing and providing service programs satisfying all participants. Based on the results and recent socioeconomic changes of the older population, some policy issues are suggested for the development of Kyungrodang.

  • Elderly people want to live in the community even if they are in poor health. However, there is no integrated care support system suitable for the health and functional status of the elderly. So the elderly are choosing living facilities. The purpose of this study is to explore exploring whether the elderly are applying for a long-term care certification. First, mild geriatric patients were mainly using home care services such as visitation care. However, some of the milder elderly were enrolled in nursing homes. And the service that does not fit the functional status of the elderly is used. Second, it is concentrated on the use of visiting care services. Third, elderly people outside the class did not receive sufficient help for daily life, and the use of community welfare services such as the elderly welfare center was low. As a result, long-term care admitters are not able to continue to live in the community even though their health and functioning status is mild, and elderly people out of grade are unable to properly use the necessary community care services. The condition is likely to deteriorate.

  • The purpose of this study was to provide basic information about the facility planning to reduce elderly isolation and to improve their rehabilitation ability. Four re%archers observed the using behavior of the elderly residents in the corridor and lounge of 5 facilities. The results of the study were as follows. The using rate of the lounge wis higher than that of the corridor since most of the elderly were controlled by the staffs at the lounge. The facility could decrease the crowd of the lounge by arranging the sofa at the corridor-especially surrounding the atrium. The use rate in the lounge was very dependent on the time of the day, because its use was influenced mainly by daily schedule, and this resoled in it being largely inactive most of the time. A counter plan is needed to encourage natural interaction among the elderly. Individual or small group activities are required in addition to the regular programs. Since the furniture arrangements_(sofas and tables) at the corridor could induce elderly isolation and inactivity, various equipments should be arranged for the self-controlled activities. The indirect participation in the regular activities, which are usually conducted in the lounge, should also be considered in the corridor so that the elderly could observe them at any places.

  • This study investigated the needs of the elderly with dementia from the perspectives of patients and caregivers in long-term care facilities. A total of 145 older adults with dementia and 62 nurses from 3 geriatric hospitals were enrolled in this study. The cognitive function, behavioral and psychological symptoms, activities of daily living (ADL), and instrumental activities of daily living (IADL) were measured. The mean number of needs reported by the elderly with dementia was 11.94 and those with unmet needs were 2.91 on average. Nurses showed that the mean number of needs and unmet needs of the elderly with dementia was 14.71 and 1.94, respectively. The largest number of older adults with dementia (42.2%) perceived that the needs for daytime activities were unmet. On the other hand, only 24.1% of nurses evaluated that the needs for daytime activities were unmet. The factors influencing the needs of the elderly with dementia were dependency in ADL and IADL. Therefore, caregivers in long-term care facilities need to take the perception of older adults with dementia into consideration when evaluating the met and unmet needs of the elderly with dementia. In addition, sufficient assistance to IADL and ADL would help reduce the needs of people with dementia.

  • While the issue of caring for the elderly that faces the modern society has reached a serious level, it is expected that it will be particularly true in the Republic of Korea where an aged, not an aging, society is impending. In this paper I did research on establishing behavioral model of residents who dwell in home or welfare facilities. I suggested a behavioral model in daily living, $W_{ip}(n)$, based on event triggering. A multi-hop routing-based wireless luminance/temperature sensor network was built based on the proposed resident's behavioral model. 1 did experiments on behavioral activities of residents on the wireless sensor network system. According to experimental results. I could classify whether the daily activity of a resident someday is regular or not. These experimental results show that the proposed behavioral model is highly applicable in caring for residents in home or welfare facilities effectively in the future.

  • The population of Korean Society is aging rapidly at a pace which is unprecedented in the world. This demographic change results in the various socioeconomic and cultural changes accompanied by spatial changes. The purpose of this study is to examine major characteristics of residential medical facilities for the elderly and the life of those using the facilities of the Capital Region in Korea. Major findings of the study are as follows. The characteristics of the location of residential medical facilities for the elderly and the life of those using the facilities are influenced not only by the mobility of the elderly. but also by the distance between the facilities and Seoul and also by the residential environments of the facilities. The location of the facilities and the mobility of the elderly, followed by the residential location of the family have an effect on everyday life of the elderly. Therefore, the location for residential medical facilities is not recommended to be far from the metropolitan area.

  • Elderly care services are health, mental health, social health, and residential services provided to temporarily or chronically disabled older persons over an extended period of time with a goal of enabling them to function as independently as possible. And elderly care facilities such as nursing homes are places in which elderly care services have to be delivered effectively. It is, therefore, desirable to compose the space of elderly care facilities to meet the mental and physical abilities of frail elder people. This study has proposed the hierarchical space organization of elderly care facilities with an aim to fulfill the goals of them. Frail older people in hierarchically designed homes are anticipated to use the inner and outer spaces of care facilities as independently as possible in accordance with their physical and mental abilities.
