  • This study is to investigate experimentally the influence of mixing factors, such as a mortar mix proportion of non-cement mortar, flow, and W/B, on quality characteristics of blast furnace slag powder mortar incorporating dry type recycled fine aggregates. In the characteristics of fresh mortar, the W/B increased according to the increase in the flow due to the increase in water contents, but air contents decreased due to loss of air contrary to the increase in the W/B. In the case of hardened mortar, the compressive strength showed a decrease due to the highly determined W/B inversely according to the increase in the flow through the entire age in which the compressive strength increased proportionally according to the increase in the B/W. Also, the increasing rate of such compressive strength increased more largely due to the latent hydraulic property of the BS according to the passage of the age. The flexural strength at the age of 28 days according to the increase in the B/W represented a similar level in strength values without any increases. The flexural strength for the compressive strength was distributed as a range of 1/2 ~ 1/3 and that showed a higher range than that of conventional concretes.

  • This study was carried out to determine the effect of accelerated curing on the strength of standard sand mortar and briquette ash mortar. The standard sand mortars and the briquette ash mortars made by mixture of the standard sand:cement and the briquette ash:cement at the ratio of 2 : 1, 3: 1 and 4 : 1, respectively, were cured at 4 different temperature of $20^{\circ}C$, $60^{\circ}C$, $80^{\circ}C$ and $100^{\circ}C$. The compression and tensil strength of mortars were measured at ${\sigma}_3$, ${\sigma}_7$, ${\sigma}_28$. The results obtained are summarized as follows; 1. At each age of curing and each curing temperature, the compression and tensile strength of the mortars made by the mixture of cement and standard sand was significantly higher than that of the mortars made by the mixture of cement and briquette ash. But the increasing rate of strength in compression and tension was significantly higher at the mortars of cement and briquette ash than those of cement and standard sand. 2. The strength of mortars which showed lower strength than Korean Standard at ordinary curing temperature was significantly increased and showed higher value than Korean Standard by the accelerated curing at high temperature. The increasing rate of strength by the accelerated curing was higher at the mortars containing less amount of cement than those containing more cement. The hardening of the mortars containing less amount of cement was significantly promoted by the accelerated curing in high temperature. 3. When the briquette ash was substituted for the materials of cement mortar, decline of the mortar strength is. unavoidable. But the enhancement of the mortar strength is still expected by the experimental results that the strength of cement-briquette ash mortar showed an increase of 137.6% by the accelerated curing at $60^{\circ}C$, 164.1% at $80^{\circ}C$ C and 183.8% at $100^{\circ}C$, respectively, compared with the strength of mortar cured at $20^{\circ}C$ for 28 days. 4. As the strength of cement briquette mortar is lower than that of cement standard sand mortar, the cement briquette ash mortar is expected to be increased in strength by the accelerated curing at high temperature. The cement briquette mortar is expected to be utilized to the production of secondary mortar goods or the constructions which need low strength of mortar.

  • This study is to investigate experimentally the strength properties of mortar using recycled fine aggregates(RA) and blast furnace slag powder(BS) without cement according to type of fine aggregate. In the results of the study, compressive strength of RA was the highest. It can be considered that the results are due to the reaction of the non-hydration cement in RA to the latent hydraulicity reaction of the BS.

  • Ultra high strength concrete, nowadays, has been widely applied to construction of high-rise building. To improve ductility and mechanical properties, steel fiber is employed in UHSC. This study investigates practical application of expansive additives(EA) and shrinkage reducing agent(SRA), in order to secure volumetric stability and improved mechanical properties, such as autogenous shrinkage and dry shrinkage of steel-fiber-reinforced-ultra-high-strength-comet-mortar(FHSM). According to the test, individual addition of steel fiber does not affect shrinkage reduction, as expected. However FHSM, with combined addition of 5$\%$ of EA and 1$\%$ of SRA decreased 60$\%$ of autogenous shrinkage. It is considered that Proper combination of EA and SRA can secure the shrinkage resistance of FHSM.

  • Osmotic pressure induced by semi-permeability of hardened cement pasts and cement mortar was studied, which was considered to be a cause of failure such as separation and blistering of floor coatings or wall coatings from the concrete substrate. The specimens with a water cement ratio of 45, 60 and 75% were installed between the solution of sodium chloride and distilled water. First, we measured water flux from distilled water to sodium chloride and the ion flux of Na+ and Cl- through the specimens. Then, we measured osmotic pressure induced by semi-permeability of the specimens using an apparatus which was specially developed for this study. It was made clear that hardened cement paste and cement mortar have properties of semipermeability, and the osmotic pressure is closely related to their water cement ratio. Finally, we calculated the osmotic pressure according to Staverman's equation, which was obtained for organic membranes, and tried to explain quantitatively the observed pressure.

  • Large amounts of waste shells have been produced each year from shellfish raising industries located in Korean costal areas. Due to the limited space for the waste shell disposal, the related environmental problem has been a serious issue. It is believed that using the waste shells as a source of aggregate for mortar, concrete or bricks can be a good solution. In this research, possibility of utilizing waste shells as an aggregate of mortar is investigated. Waste shells of manila clam, cockle, clam, sea mussel, and oyster were properly crushed, sieved, and sorted to meet the requirements of the grading of standard fine aggregate. After that, the waste shells were used as partial and total replacement of the fine aggregate, and their absorption and 28-day compressive strengths of mortar were measured. In general, replacement of waste shells increased the absorption and decreased the strength. However, one specimen with cockle increased compressive strength as replacement ratio increased. Mortar with cockle of 50% and 100% replacement showed higher compressive strength than that of control mortar. This increase of compressive strength was found to be affected by the strong interfacial bonding properties of the cockle and a cement matrix.

  • This study gives results of 1aboratory investigations to minimize the slump loss of concrete using high range water reducing admixture (HRWR). Various factors influencing on the slump loss such as cement type, HRWR type and dosage time are investigated. The acquired results indicated that 30 minutes delayed dosage of HRWR is very effective on reducing the slump loss though this tendency makes a difference to some extent according to cement and HRWR type. For the most part, the more usage of HRWR increases, the higher the slump loss occurs and concrete using ordinary portland cement has the highest slump loss and concrete using fly ash 20% replacement cement with HRWR of naphthalene type has the good effect on reducing the slump loss.
