  • Purpose: The purpose of this study was to develop video assisted education on bowel preparation for colonoscopy (VEBPC) and use a snartphone to evaluate effects of the VEBPC. Methods: Adult patients who were scheduled for colonoscopy were recruited from a university general hospital and randomly assigned to three groups. Group 1 (n=30) watched the video using a computer set in the endoscope consulting room. Group 2 (n=29) watched it using a smartphone, and group 3, the control group (n=29) received education with existing instructions at the reservation-reception desk. Participants were evaluated on knowledge on taking bowel preparation agents and diet, compliance on taking bowel preparation agents and diet, satisfaction with education, and actual level of bowel preparation. Results: Group 1 and 2 showed significantly (p<.001) higher scores for knowledge, compliance, and satisfaction compared to the control group. However, in post-hoc test analyses there were no significant differences in these variables between group 1 and 2. No significant difference was found in the actual level of bowel preparation among the three groups. Conclusion: Findings from this study show that VEBPC using smartphone is a better option than existing educational methods. However, replication studies are necessary to confirm these findings.

  • This Article's aim is to articulate Confucius's theory of poetics in analects. Confucius tried to establish Humanism and educate the idea of 'learning to become a sage' based upon six classics. He empathized with the education of The Book of Poetry. Sze-ma Tseen said that the old poems amounted to more than 3,000. Confucius removed those which were only repetitions of others and sang to them with his lute, bringing them into accordance with the appropriate musical style. This is the first notice which we have of any compilation of the ancient poems by Confucius. Confucius said, "If you do not learn the Odes, you are not fit to converse with. The Odes 1) serve to stimulate the mind, 2) may be used for purposes of self-contemplation, 3) teach the art of sociability, 4) show how to regulate feelings of resentment, 5-6.) 'From them you learn the more immediate duty of serving one's father, and the remoter one of serving one's prince. and from them we become largely acquainted with the names of birds, beasts, and plants.' Confucius' said, 'In the Book of Poetry are three hundred pieces, but the design of them all may be embraced in one sentence-- "Having no depraved thoughts."' This sentence is the final definition of Poetics.

  • Background : Bronchoscopy is an important diagnostic and a therapeutic tool in chest medicine. However, most patients feel that a bronchoscopy is an unpleasant procedure, and it is important to sedate the patients appropriately, particularly where repetitive examinations are required. Midazolam is a sedative drug with amnestic qualities and a rapid 2 hour half-life. This study have attempted to determine the safety, appropriate dosage, and the effect of midazolam premedication in patients who underwent a bronchoscopy. Methods : One hundred and eighty consecutive patients undergoing bronchoscopy were enrolled in this study. The patients received a midzolam doses of 0.03 mg/kg, 0.06 mg/kg, or a placebo. An additional dose of lidocaine, the total number of coughs, and the duration of the procedures were recorded with monitoring the the blood pressure, heart rate, and oxygen saturation. The level of satisfaction was assessed by the patient, bronchoscopist, and the nurse. Results : The blood pressure, pulse rates, oxygen saturation, number of coughs, lidocaine dose, and procedure time in the 3 groups were similar. There was a trend for the midazolam 0.03 mg/kg group to satisfy bronchoscopists more than the other two groups. The nurses' acceptability was lower in the midazolam 0.06 mg/kg group than the other groups. The patients' acceptablity was greater in both the midazolam 0.03 mg/kg and 0.06 mg/kg groups than in the control group. Conclusion : Sedation with low doses of intravenous midazolam is a safe technique for fiberoptic bronchoscopy with a low morbidity and high acceptable to patients and bronchoscopists.

  • Experiments were conducted to establish a measuring method of the stomatal aperture in the leaves of the wheat plant, and to find the diurnal movements of the stomate in leaves of different position and tillers. The measurement methods used were the infiltration and the microrelief impression methods. The aperture of the stomate in the infiltration method was expressed in terms of the solutions pent ration into the leaf and this was refered to as the infiltration score. A score I represents injection with 10% iso-butyl alcohol+90% ethylene glycol solution and a score 7 represents injection with 70% iso-butyl alcohol +30% ethlene glycol solution. A linear relationship was obtained between the infiltration score and average pore width in a large number. of the stomata observed in the leaves of the adaxial and abaxial epidermis. The aperature of the stomate of flag and the 1st leaf were exhibited diurnal change with the maximum aperture at 10 A.M. but that of 2nd leaf reached maximum aperture 2 hours later than upper two leaves. After reaching the maximum aperture the stomata gradually closed and then completely closed at 6 P.M. The aperture of the stomate in the adaxial epidermis and the base part of the leaf were larger than those in the abaxial and top part of the leaf, and aperture of the stomate in the leaves of the main stem was larger than those on the tillers.

  • Paradoxical vocal fold movement (PVFM) is a dystonic laryngeal disorder characterized by involuntary vocal fold adduction during inspiration and/or expiration. PVFM is uncommon and may aggravate airway obstruction. And patients with PVFM have a specific etiology; therefore, treatment must be individualized and given immediately. We present a case of 63-year-old male presenting with intermittent dyspnea. After multidisciplinary workup, we presumed psychogenic PVFM and evaluated with speech-language pathologist and psychologist. In this report, we describe a rare case of psychogenic PVFM patient.
