A Study on the Effective Visual Form Following the Numerical Information Types (수치정보 유형에 따른 효과적인 시각적 형태 연구)

  • Although a number of information is emerging in the big data era and studies on the infographic studies for delivering it effectively are becoming an issue, the visualization study on the numerical information delivered through the credit card statement is very poor compared to its importance. The effective visualization method following each information characteristics was by analyzing the numerical information types focusing on the credit card statement. The type of the figure information classified into the comparative analysis, progress of time change, proportion, relationship, scope, and distribution, and it was made into the graph form proper to the nature of each information to study the most effective and ideal visual form. Therefore, this study is significant because it suggests a control point of the visualization by pointing out an effective visual form for delivering the numerical information that appears on the credit card statement with the figure characteristics.

State Visualization Design of AI Speakers using Color Field Painting (색면추상 기법을 통한 AI 스피커의 상태 시각화 디자인 연구)

  • Recently released AI speakers show a pattern of interacting with the user by mainly with voice and simultaneously displaying simple and formal visual feedback through status LED light. This is due to the limitations of the product characteristics of the speaker, which makes it difficult to interact variously, and even such visual feedback is not standardized for each product, and thus does not give a consistent user experience. By maximizing the visual elements that can be expressed through color and abstract movement to assist voice feedback, the product can provide the user with an extended experience that includes not only functional satisfaction but also emotional satisfaction. In this study, after analyzing the interaction methods of the existing AI speakers, we examined the theory of color communication in order to expand the visual feedback effect, and examined the meaning and expression technique of Color Field Painting, an art genre that maximizes the emotional experience by using only color. Through this, the AI speaker's visual communication function was expanded by designing a way to feedback communication status using LED light.

  • Many visually handicapped people face difficulties with using libraries. Public libraries are thus required to meet the need of visually handicapped people. Public libraries should guarantee the visually handicapped the right to use appropriate services. If so, the visually handicapped can improve their life quality by decreasing information gap and increasing information comprehension or accessibility. This study is designed to analyze how visually handicapped people can use public libraries. Based on the analysis, this study can provide actual suggestions to improve opportunities for the visually handicapped to use libraries. Data are collected from visually handicapped people who are the members of Suseong Public Library, Daegu, Korea. In specific, this study can analyze various characteristics(i.e., information needs, selection and use behavior of information sources, difficulties and gaps to access information, use behavior and service satisfaction of public library) regarding their library use by telephone interviews.

A study on developing color braille system for the blind (시각장애인을 위한 컬러 인식 점자 시스템 개발 연구)

  • This Braille System for color recognition was designed for those who have lost eye sight after birth. This system was based on the idea that these people had the understanding of colours before they went blind. So when they touch the braille, they can feel and recognize colours. This system adopted the Munsell's hue circle system which is used worldwide for its simple way of colour identification. It also used some texture to help people in need identify the brightness and saturation of colors. In spite of its simple structure, this system has a range of up to 153 different colours. For a friendly use, minimal changes were made by modifying location and height of dots of the braille system which blind people are already accustomed to. Because of it's simplicity, this colour braille system can be used easily and broadly. I believe that many acquired blind people can feel colour again through using this system and get benefits of social and cultural communication.

  • This study explored the possibility of using visual models in teaching proportional reasoning based on the review of previous studies. Many studies on proportional reasoning emphasize that students tend to simply apply formal procedures without understanding the meaning behind them and that using visual models may be an alternative to help students develop informal strategies and proportional reasoning. Given these, we re-constructed and implemented the unit of a textbook to teach sixth graders proportional reasoning with ratio table, double number line, and double tape diagram. The results of this study showed that such visual models helped students understand the meaning of proportion, explore the properties of proportion, and solve proportional problems. However, several difficulties that students experienced in using the visual models led us to suggest cautionary notes when to teach proportional reasoning with visual models. As such, this study is expected to provide empirical information for textbook developers and teachers who teach proportional reasoning with visual models.

A Co-Development Environment for Visual Programs (시각 프로그램을 위한 공동 개발 환경)

  • Visual programs consist of user interfaces and process logics. Because most visual IDEs(Integrated Development Environment) are utilized by only one developer, many developers can't cooperate simultaneously in one large-scaled visual Program to promote the development efficiency. This paper suggests a co-development environment for visual programs through which developers can cooperate with each other in the type of distribution. Developers can maintain the coincidence and the confidence of cooperation through a communication window and a job controller to process the Priority of the events that developers make in co-development work. Especially in large-sealed visual Program, the suggested environment reduces the burden that developer takes about the heavy development work, and many developers can divide and take the complex and large program modules according to their ability. We hope that the suggested environment can improve the development productivity and effectivity because it can reduce the time and effort for developing user interfaces in visual programs.

Automatic Method for Transforming Image into Tactile Map Based on Cognitive Characteristics of Visually Impaired Persons (시각장애인 인지특성을 기반으로 한 영상자료의 촉각지도 자동 변환 방법)

  • In this paper, we propose the method for automatically transfers images into tactile maps information based on cognition characteristics of visually impaired persons to more easily provide various image information for visually impaired persons. The proposed method automatically classify color images into row complexity and high complexity based on intensity information and transfer images into tactile map information using each different transformation process. Experimental evaluation, We performed with visually impaired five persons experiments for evaluating the recognition and satisfaction that tactile maps of the proposed automatic transforming method and the manually generated tactile maps of braille textbooks. Experimental results, the recognition and satisfaction that the tactile maps of the proposed method generated are very similar to those of the tactile maps of braille textbooks. Therefore, it could hugely be reduced the time and money of production education materials, and it could greatly improved educative results because it can add more easily that many image data of education materials.

  • As recent interest in ecological resources increases, an effort in three-dimensional visualization of the ecological resources has increased for the restoration and preservation of the natural environment as well as the evaluation of the landscape. However, in the case of forest resources, information extraction has been active, but the effort in trying to apply that information into an effective visualization has not happened. In other words, the effort for effective visualization is lacking when it comes to the visualization of forest resources, and numerous cases are ether non-realistic or the simulation required for analysis is inappropriate. Therefore, this paper extracts information through the use of airborne LiDAR data, aerial photograph, and forest type maps to create a vegetation layer, and then uses Flora3D forest modeling tools and ArcGlobe to accurately visualize the vegetation layer into the three dimension. An effective application for restoration and preservation of ecological resources as well as analysis on the urban landscape can be considered as a result of intuitively and realistically enabling the user's awareness of forest information within the Geographic Information System.

Comparing the Effects of Visual and Visual-auditory Feedback on Eco-driving and Driving Workload (시각적 피드백과 시각-청각적 피드백이 에코 드라이빙과 운전부하에 미치는 상대적 효과)

  • Recent studies have suggested that providing in-vehicle feedback on various driving behaviors promote eco-friendly driving behaviors. However, there was relatively little interest in cognitive overload that can be caused by the provision of information. Thus, the goal of this study was to investigate the relative effects of two types of feedback(visual feedback vs. visual-auditory feedback) to increase eco-driving performance while minimizing driving workload. Also, in this study, the complexity of the driving task was distinguished (secondary vs. tertiary task) in order to reflect the actual driving situation. The study adopted a counterbalancing design in which the two feedback types were delivered in a different order under the two different task conditions. Results showed that providing the visual-auditory feedback was more effective than the visual only feedback in both promoting eco-friendly driving behaviors and minimizing driving workload under both task conditions.

Analysis on Effects of Visual Messages and Auditory Messages on Pedestrian Safety Behavior (시각적 메시지와 시각적-청각적 메시지가 보행자의 안전행동에 미치는 효과분석)

  • Pedestrians are the most vulnerable road users. According to one analysis of traffic accidents over a five year period, pedestrians accounted for about 40% of all road traffic deaths in South Korea. Although some policy and engineering approaches have been taken to reduce and prevent traffic accidents, the annual accident change rate is -0.7%, which is insufficient. This study verifies the effectiveness of presenting visual messages to pedestrians and the effect from adding auditory messages to the visual messages. The experiment was conducted on crosswalks adjacent to an intersection, and safety behaviors were recorded for a total of 898 pedestrians and considered sufficient. As a result of the study, overall pedestrian safety behavior improved when both visual and auditory messages were presented, rather than just visual messages. Therefore, the results indicate it is more effective to provide a mixed visual/auditory form of messages, rather than providing single stimulus messages.
