  • The dynamics of underwater vehicles can be greatly influenced by the dynamics of the vehicle thrusters. The control of the state of the hovering or very slow motion of the underwater vehicle is most important for automatic docking or control of the manipulator of the vehicle. The dynamics of the thruster based on the electric motor is nonlinear and has uncertain parameters. Since the dynamics of the vehicle coupled with the dynamics of the thruster is nonlinear and has uncertain parameters, a robust control is very effective for a desired motion tracking of the uncertain and nonlinear vehicle. In this paper a study was performed on the robust control scheme of the very slow motion or hovering motion of the underwater vehicle actuated by the electric motor. Also, a concurrent control on the state of the vehicle with nonlinearity and uncertain parameters was performed. A sliding mode control algorithm out of robust controllers was designed and applied, which compensates the nonlinear forces and uncertain parameters of the vehicle and actuator. Through a computer simulation, the proposed control scheme was compared with a linear PD controller and its superior performance was validated.

  • The paper studies a comparison analysis of semi-active control strategies for a Macpherson strut type suspension system consisting of MR(magneto-rheological) damper. As a first step, in order to formulate governing, a dynamic full model of a Macpherson strut is developed considering the kinematics. The nonlinear equation of motion of the strut is then linearized around the equilibrium point. A new adaptive moving sliding model controller is developed for fast response of the system. A newly proposed adaptive moving sliding mode control strategy is then compared with conventional sliding mode controller and skyhook controller. The comparison is made for two different types of road inputs; bump and random road profiles showing superior vibration control performance in time and frequency domains.

  • We compare an integral sliding mode control with a typical sliding mode control for robot manipulators through two primitive tasks: set-point regulation and trajectory tracking control. To prove the asymptotic stability of two methods for robot manipulators, we introduce three important properties in the robot dynamics: skew-symmetry, positive-definiteness, and boundedness of robot parameter matrices and we present one unified control structure using a parametric velocity vector. From illustrative examples, we show that two methods effectively control for robot manipulators.

  • The variable structure control(VSC) with sliding mode is an important and interesting topic in modern control of nonlinear systems. However, the discontinuous control law in VSC leads to undesirable chattering in practice. As a method solving this problem, in this paper, we propose a scheme of the VSC with neural network sliding surface. A neural network sliding surface with boundary layer is employed to solve discontinuous control law. The proposed controller can eliminate the chattering problem of the conventional VSC. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is verified by simulation results.

  • This paper proposes a robust impedance controller for high-DOF robots. The model-based control of a higher DOF robot uses a numerical dynamic model because the analytical dynamic model is difficult to be derived and this means that modeling error is inevitable. The impedance control in the task space is affected by joint motions and has more difficulties in the higher DOF robots. In addition, the disturbances must be decoupled in the control of high DOF robot. This paper proposes a robust impedance controller based on integral sliding mode control (ISMC) and disturbance observer(DOB) for high-DOF robot manipulator. The ISMC is used to improve the robustness of the impedance control and to preserve its nominal performance. DOB is also employed to cancel the effects of input disturbances and to reduce the maximum gain of the ISMC which eventually determines the input chattering size.

  • In this paper, we proposed an adaptive fuzzy sliding mode control for nonlinear systems without parameter projection method. By modifying the controller structure, the parameters of the estimated input gain function are guaranteed not being identically zero and it is shown that the control scheme will not cause any implementation problem even if the estimated value of input gain function is zero at any moment during on-line operations. Except for the input gain function which an approximate estimate for its lower bound is needed, the proposed control scheme does not assume a priori the exact values of the bounding parameters. Based on Lyapunov synthesis methods, the overall control system guarantees that the tracking error asymptotically converges to zero and that all signals involved in controller are uniformly bounded. This can be illustrated by the simulation results for an inverted pendulum system.

  • The control systems with friction cause the steady state error and slow response, because friction is a sensitive to the change of system condition and has highly nonlinear characteristics. To overcome these problems and do precise position control for a ball-screw system, we use Coulomb friction estimator and the sliding mode control(SMC) to compensate its negative effect. The applied SMC for tracking position has a characteristics of robust stability and reducing chattering, and is derived from the Lyapunov stability theorem and reaching condition. Compensating the estimated friction torque to the bounded disturbance term of the SMC's equivalent control input, it has a tracking performance better than the PID from the experimental results.

  • This paper deals with the application of enhanced perturbation estimation (SMCEPE) to sliding mode control of a dynamic system in the presence of perturbations including external disturbances, unpredictable parameter variations, and unstructured dynamics. Compared to conventional sliding mode control (SMC) and sliding mode control with perturbation estimation (SMCPE), the proposed one can offer robust control performances under serious control conditions, such as fast dynamic perturbations and slow loop-closure speeds, without a priori knowledge on upper bounds of perturbations. The perturbation estimator in SHCEPE also has more adaptability owing to the fractional-order hold technique. The effectiveness and superiority of the proposed control strategy are demonstrated by a series of simulations on the position tracking control of a two-link robot manipulator.

  • Excavator has been used in wide field since the attachment in the end effect can be changeable according to the purpose of working. However, efficiency of work using excavator mainly depends on an operator's ability. For the purpose of improving the efficiency of work and reducing the fatigue of operator, the automatic excavator system has been researched. In this paper, the tracking control system of each links of excavator is designed before developing the automatic excavator system. In order to apply the tracking control system, the pneumatic excavator system is developed and the tracking control system is applied. For designing the tracking control system, the adaptive sliding mode control algorithm is proposed. The performance of the proposed control system is evaluated through experiments using the pneumatic excavator system.

  • We consider a single-input-single-output nonlinear system which is represented in a normal form. The model contains the uncertainty. A high-gain observer is used to estimate the states variables to reject a modeling uncertainty We design the globally bounded output feedback controller using sliding mode control to stabilize the closed-loop system. The globally bounded output feedback controller reduce the peaking in the states variables. The proposed method give a more design freedom in the design of the globally bounded controller than that of the previous work.
