  • The evolution of hypersonic scramjet engines was reviewed from the 1960s to the present. Concepts of hypersonic air-breathing propulsion systems based on scramjet engine, such as combined-cycle engine, were described and compared with other high-speed propulsion systems. The development history of scramjet engines over the past 40 years odd was introduced with priority given to the efforts in the United States, and the current status of scramjet technology was reviewed through the recent development programs in several developed countries.

  • Korea Aerospace Research Institute has been designed and manufactured various thurst nozzles of the scramjet engine for optimized configuration. The test campaign for thurst nozzle characteristics was performed at T4 free-piston shock tunnel in University of Queensland, Australia. Total 8 kinds of thrust nozzles and 2 kinds of side walls were manufactured for this campaign. In this paper, the design and specification of thrust nozzles was reported. Based on the static pressure distribution of the engine and pitot pressure distributions at nozzle exit, The positive net thurst was observed with baseline case of the test campaign.

  • This study is the results of the analytical research for a dual-model scramjet engine flowpath which is included inlet, isolator, combustor, and nozzle. To design a dual-mode scramjet engine and to investigate its performance, the performance analysis models and tools are required to develope for aerodynamic, thermodynamic characteristics, propulsion, and total system. Therefore, analysis models for air inlet, isolator, supersonic combustor, and nozzle of a dual-mode scramjet engine were accomplished, the performance characteristics of a dual-mode scramjet engine is investigated with using the developed analysis tools.

  • A technical analysis of current scramjet and combined-cycle engine is presented. Substantial research has been pursued to characterize the operation mechanism of scramjet propulsion, especially in the areas of flame stabilization and system integration, dramatically over the years in support of both military and space access application. Major technology that had significant impact on the maturation of scramjet propulsion technology are dual combustion ramjet, dual mode ramjet, and combined cycle engine to cover a typical wide rage of flight, up to flight Mach number 10. Notable are the fundamental and practical techniques, for instance, scram propulsion itself, thermal relaxation and protection using endothermic fuel and/or CSiC composit materials, and design/manufacture of movable intake and nozzle, to realize high speed propulsion system in near future.

  • The numerical simulations of hydrocarbon fueled scramjet engine have been studied less than them of hydrogen fueled scramjet engine. Ethylene is selected in hydrocarbon because of its good thermochemical properties and a direct-connect scramjet combustor at the American Air Force Research laboratory is taken to a two-dimensional simulation model. Ignition time delay of ethylene was monitored and air throttling was imposed to generate ignition inside the model scramjet.

  • This paper presents the characteristics of the performance parameters of dual mode(ramjet-scramjet combined) engine, inlet and combustor for wide range of flight Mach number, resulted from the analysis of its operating limitations. The transitional-critical flight Mach number from ramjet to scramjet and the performance of two types of combustors, such as constant pressure- and constant area- combustor, are conceptually evaluated.

  • Scramjet engine combustor was tested with "RAMSYS" blow down wind tunnel in Kakuda Space Center, JAXA. As a result, installation of a cavity showed larger combustion pressure than the case without a cavity. Zigzag cavity applied for the first time in this experiment, showed the largest combustion pressure and is expected to contribute to the stable and economic operation of scramjet.

  • A Mach 5 nozzle and a diffuser of the Scramjet Engine Test Facility (SETF) were made for a hydrocarbon-fueled scramjet engine. SETF, attached with a diffuser guide, started with a model of 60% blockage, though the model engine could not start by over expansion of the facility nozzle. The model was moved into the nozzle to escape the shock generated from the nozzle exit, both SETF and the engine could start. The pitot rake experiments (blockage of 2.3%) were done for measuring the core flow in the test section. From the pitot experiments, the core flow was expanded by an under expansion. It means that the core flow in the test section was related with a model blockage. SETF and the engine with a blockage of 33% work normally. From a series of experiments, SETF started with a normal shock efficiency of 58%, regardless of a blockage ratio.
